It was twin car of Geo Storm back in the early 90’s. Isuzu version was more expensive than geo make. The engine was very buttery smooth and light feel of pedal made you feel as if you were on an more expensive car. The interior was very cavernous for a small car.

@@screenPhiles English is unfortunately not my native language, not sure what do You mean by "homely". There is something wrong with proportions in the rear section. As for me, car looks like the front and middle secton are taken from one car (this is the good part), and the rear part is from another. Rear axle is too far back. I really like the look of the front lights, i love and i miss round head lights in cars, but pop-up complication is not needed, imo. Older Impulse was much more well proportioned, and RWD.

Isuzu made far better cars than they were given credit for. The last Impulses and Styluses were pretty much top of their class in the early ‘90s. But the Stylus and Impulse didn’t get the marketing cash GM put into its Geo Storm platform mate, and when Isuzu got hit hard when the Japanese economic bubble popped, they couldn’t afford to make their own low-margin cars anymore. What a pity.

I covered the industry as a journalist back in the day. I can tell you real development work between GM, Lotus, and Isuzu on this car, and the Geo Storm was going on in the late 80s. Compared to a lot of sporty compacts, even the CRX.. these cars could hold their own. Good handling, fun, efficient sporty runabouts, but not quite sports cars. GM had "bean counters" that kept the budget as low as possible. With a few improvements , like a large turbo, and slightly bigger wheel/tire combo, these little light weights could have easily put out around 200 hp or more and competed against , or beat Integras , CRX/ Civic Si, MX3s, and even sports cars of its day ,but the Impulse and Storm didn't quite get there. Great Video post though.

I had this exact same car in the same colour. I think it's an attractive little thing, and it was an absolute blast to drive. The gearbox was one of the best I've ever used, and there was more room for the driver and passenger than you would expect in such a small car. I'm 6' 2" and there was plenty of headroom and legroom. The only real negative to these cars that I experienced was the cheap metal and poor rustproofing. When mine started to go, it went quickly. The sills rotted out completely and unfortunately the car went to the junkyard with the mechanicals still in perfect running condition. They all rusted badly, and quickly disappeared off the streets. I haven't seen one of them in many, many years.

This car never got the chance to shine amongst the Supra, R34 Skyline GT-R, RX-7, NSX, and 3000GT, not only because of lack of pop interest and Isuzu's reputation for building more trucks but also from 90s GM's crappy quality. Maybe the transition from RWD to FWD may have even played a part in its downfall. It was, nevertheless, an exception amongst all JDM cars, a forgotten gem. ✋🏿 Wayment. What was that about the gauges? 😂 Also, I wonder which Lotus had the tendency to lift the inside rear wheel, when cornered hard. 🤔 I still want one of these, and I love the headlights. Anyway, this made me think about my '90 Spacecab, which makes slightly less HP, but much more torque, with its 2.6FI. It probably stops in a similar distance, with its all-disc brakes, but maybe even better, now that I've put Rodeo brakes up front, and stainless hoses all around.

I had one of the even rarer Impulse XS Wagonback variants... unlike the coupe, it had respectable rear seats whose covering matched the front seats (since that seems important to the reviewer). The neatest feature about the wagonback was that it had gull-like rear windows that could be left open and not let rain in (unless the rain was horizontal from the rear). Besides that I really miss the bezel ("pod" in the review) control for wipers and lights - never seen another car (other that the derivative Storm) with something like it. I don't get the reviewer's whingeing about the door latches - they were great as the design kept the mechanism out of the snow and ice we get in eastern Ontario. Sadly though the cars were highly susceptible to rust and that was ultimately the fate of mine - it just rusted too much to be able to save it.

Geo Storm GSi. My brother bought one in the end of 90's. Drove it to Key West from Philly and back 4 times. Back then was looking for CRX but got Storm instead 😀

I'm currently resurrecting one of these from the dead! Got it for $200 from the previous owner--not a spot of rust. The car was on a condemned property and the city gave him 24 hours to get rid of it or it would be crushed It's an XS but it has overbored engine from an RS turbo sitting in the interior waiting for a transmission (and a supercharger, hah) So glad I could save it

To put the 0-60 time in modern context. The Nissan Kicks gets hated on because it's so slow but it's 0-60 time is barely slower than this car.

My wife has a '93 Asuna Sunfire with the Lotus handling and under 100k miles, but she's looking to sell it soon due to the factory replacement parts being near impossible to find now.

I remember seeing a black one fully optioned one like this new, in January 1990 at the Annual Autoshow in VA Beach. It looked good, people stood in line to check it out , but not an improvement over the previous gen. A small step back imho.

I REALLY like the looks of this car, and the review actually made me like the car more, despite the shaming of it's styling. I was born in 1989, why have I never seen this car before? Now I want one! Looks incredibly easy to work on too!

My wife actually owns an Asuna Sunfire and is looking to sell it. It's basically the '93 version of this car.

Have always found the front of the car very attractive but not so much the rear. The headlight configuration is especially cool

Just saw a local ad for a JDM Piazza for $8k... calm down buddy, it ain't no Skyline. But if someone wants to overpay to sit on the wrong side of the car, okay.

Fast forward thirty years and isuzu is gone (from the us vehicle market, the company is very much still around in Japan making components for heavy industry and other car companies) and subaru has climbed to equal footing with honda and toyota and doing way better than nissan

Just lol. Had one for about a month. I bought a beater in 2003 for about $500. It never did run right. But I thought it was so unique and cool! _"Handling by Lotus"_ Just love that!

That car was nothing but bad luck for me, suspension by lotus meant big bucks when I had to change the struts.. my phone was on the dash with the windows down and took a corner... that phone slid all the way to the passenger window and right out of it. Then one winter someone clipped my fender on a bridge I went into a few 360's on the bridge and up on the medium with my ass hanging over Then a cop hit me and I was back on the bridge with a smashed izuzu smashed cop car and a pissed cop. Oh to be young again...
