I defy any right-minded RL fan to dispute that the product was far superior back then. The early 90's were the zenith of RL: intricate rook plays, forwards steaming on to the ball from DEPTH, specialist positions; tactical battles, expansive movement of the ball with sparks of genius from players like Schofield et al. Sad to say, but the dour tactics of the Aussies during the norties, the obsessive expedience of the play the ball and production of raw powerful athletes as oppose to footballers, ruined the game in my eyes. RL these days, in comparison, is a total bore! Five one-up hits from dummy half and a kick. On a good day teams might spin the ball wide inside the opponents 15 metre zone, if you're lucky. Listening to the analysis from pundits is like sitting in a corporate board meeting with a bunch of paper merchants - stats and yardage metres, set completions... etc etc.. dull AF... 😣😣😣😴😴😴😴😴

I became a hardcore fan of the game around this time and a massive fan of the Brisbane Broncos. The electrifying style of open running footy mixed with tough nonsense forwards who played the full 80 mins. Now the game is robotic. The players are douchebags (not all of them) and corporate money dominates. I barely watch the game anymore.

I was at this game. Couldn't believe after the 82 and 86 Invincibles we could possibly lose. Thankfully we got up in the next two Tests. The 2nd Test at Manchester was the greatest game of Rugby League ever played.

I was shocked for days.I couldn't believe it.The almighty Kangaroos got done,outplayed. The greatest ever Great Britain side I have ever seen.Great players peaking at the same time to produce possibly their finest ever performance against the Kangaroos.Years in the making.It was building and they delivered.Well done Mal Reilly,Ellery and the boys.It was champagne football. A great day for British rugby league.What a magnificent series it was.Some of the finest ever rugby league I've ever seen played on the football field all throughout.Both sides pushing each other to the limit to find their very best.Absolutely outstanding!👏

Thanks Shaun. Great memories here. These were the men who inspired a lifelong passion in me for rugby league. Hanley, Meninga, Gregory, Offiah. Still great names these 30 years later. I love the structure of play when you watch these old games: lots of run arounds, double dummy drop offs, etc. I feel like we've lost some of this, in favor of the parallel running lines that are used so often used by the attacking team in the modern game - used too often in my opinion. Still, we've been treated to a great game all these years, and long may it continue. Thanks again Shaun.

@M MacDonalds is also widely consumed; but haute cuisine it is clearly not! Trump was very popular among millions in the US - also not a good indicator of quality. Clearly, quantity doesn't beget quality. Perhaps our palettes are differentially refined? I'll stick to my rugby, thanks, while you pay extortionate prices to watch overpaid millionaires fall on the floor feigning injury, in between abusing the referee. After that, you can wash down the bad taste left in your mouth, with a nice serving of hooliganism outside the stadium, unless the police have arranged the requisite animal caging to preclude your after-match dessert. Unfortunately, I won't be able to join you for this dessert, as in my sport, 12 teams can all play against each other on the same weekend at the same stadium, mixing freely, enjoying each others company, and amicably celebrating the sport they love. We call it 'Magic Weekend', and it would truly require physics-defying magic to make that happen in football. So it seems we'll be deprived of the crowd violence that your sport thrives in, but go ahead, enjoy! By the way, how strange you felt the need to come and post on a rugby league video - if your sport is so enthralling, presumably you'd be watching it, rather than here? But here you are - maybe your subconscious is telling you something? If so, we might welcome you as a fellow supporter, but you'll need to learn some respect, manners and dignity before you join our ranks. We're a more cultivated bunch than your average soccer fan. So maybe you'll need to just stick to MacDonalds?

In this era it was the unpredictability of players like Gregory and Schofield that made the game entertaining. Anything off the cuff has been coached out of players in the modern era to the point were we are watching 26 robots grind each other down.

Used to go to a lot of events at Wembley in those days as my dad worked at the Stadium. I loved going to the Challenge Cup finals but this was the greatest day out at Wembley ever. What a great game, some outstanding players and a great win for GB. Went to Elland Road for the third test but the less said the better. Love Ray French’s commentary.

Thanks for hosting. One of the best tests ever with incredible intensity all game. Schofield got the official Man of the Match, but Hanley was 10/10 - John Monie said he was the best player in the world during the telecast, and as Rugby League Week noted at the time, Dennis Betts "had a picnic up the middle".

Drew Deca is it because Rugby Union has become more popular due to professionalism and the money that can be earned by players? Has the talent from up north gone to rugby union? Are the new Ellery Hanley’s, Dennis Bett’s, Mike Gregory’s and Martin Offiah’s now playing Union? That is all I can think off. Great rugby players have always come from Lancashire and Yorkshire, are they now being signed by rugby union clubs? It’s a great shame because Rugby League is a truly great game.

@neilrobinsonproperty

The largest island, one of approximately 188 inhabited islands in the British Isles, is called Great Britain, and as such the country we inhabit is called The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, which incidentally, is the longest name of any UN sovereign state in the world. "Great" refers to the relative size of it, as the largest. However I'm sure you knew all that, and were just being facetious. You were, weren't you? Cheeky scamp.
