I used to shoot at a local pool hall and Grady Mathews came through town and stopped by. The hall was pretty new, so when Grady played straight pool, he had the hall's first 100 ball run. He got up to around 150. It was fun to watch.

The classic Accu-stats videos are gold treasure in general. The commentary, the players, we did not have 50 super robots shooting the same way back then, everyone had their own style and personality. There are maybe 2 current commentators that are close to Grady, Billy, Buddy, and having Archer and some of the other top players sit in is a treat. Always loved Archer's humor and tongue in cheek comments.

I can't believe, I've never seen this match. I read elsewhere that it's the "greatest match ever", which brought me here! It's refreshing to go back in time and watch these old skool players. No carbon fiber shafts, no ld shafts, no gloves. Pure talent. An outright gun fight between two champions. The game has changed so much. Players now days don't have style like before. The game has evolved. Nothing wrong with that. Keep shootin them balls guys and gals 🙌

I loved the atmosphere of tournaments back then- rail birds bettin ( and sleeping) on the side, The Mike Sigel Show chirpin away, Varner chompin his gum, Live crowd, Sal Butera vs. Johnny Archer, Hopkins vs. 'Cardone, Grady Mathews and Buddy Hall commentary, great Women's matches just feet away.....more intense, more intimate, more gambling and more human than today's tournaments.

I thought Varner missed that shot because he wasn't lined up properly for that shot, but I also was shocked he missed it. Just a couple of days ago I missed the same kind of shot in the same fashion by hitting the point on the side pocket, and afterwards I felt my miss was because of body and cue misalignment. That was one of the greatest matches I have ever seen.

Wow! what a match & both had numerous times to win the match back & forth & again. Varner makes some great kicks (with a tad of luck) to come from the dead 2 to 9 & still gave Siegel opportunities which was given back again & then Varner misses the game ball but got lucky on the roll & locked the cue & 9 dead to the end rail but. Amazing! IMO Siegel could have hit high/middle soft inside/left for a chance to really throw that 9 & win and/or leave the cue on the other end for a long shot on the 9 for Varner if it didn’t go in! The was Siegel hit at the frozen 1/9 was like a newbie who never played the game or someone who just gave up. Either way he hit it wrong & Varner got lucky on the leave after he dogged a simple shot for the win & still won!! How the side ball was a lock up on every break some 21 times was too bizarre but I’ve seen it b4. Great Game!

Varner, to me, plays thoughtful, mental, calculating pool Nothing flashy, rock solid, in position. In pro tennis, a guy named Brad Gilbert played "Winning Ugly" and it works.

What a pleasure to watch and have prefect commintary. This type of players mix with prefect commintary what makes it so great is the camaraderie of these players in that day and age. They all knew one and other and the competition was kept to the games on the table not personal jealousies or envies. Mike was just off the movie "Color of Money" he was the choreographer for the pool players and did a great job. I'm wondering if he had any call on which pro players were used but I kinda think he did. Enough of my chat room I'm really enjoying this and do miss it in today's argumentive commentation choices.

Nick has world titles in every main discipline, 8 ball, 9 ball, 10 ball, 1 pocket, bank pool, etc. He is the only person to own that distinction. He owns 7 world titles and has been inducted in to most of the different "hall of fame" bodies. ( straight pool, 1 pocket, bank pool etc) He should be in every discussion about best of all time, and depending who else you like, he should always land in top 3 for goat. plus, he's one of the nicest people you will ever meet and a great coach.

One of my fondest memories in pool was being able to spend a little time watching and talking with Nick whenever I passed through Orlando when he used to be at Pro Billiards in the late 90's early 2000's. This is the type of matches people love to watch when there is a chance for 9 rack comebacks. This type of stuff is long gone with Alternate break, 1” smaller pockets now at 4” and 9 on the spot and break box. I remember the old days 35 years ago of 5”+ buckets and we all used La Pro tips no metal like jump cues or carbon low deflection shafts etc and no KZbin training videos. Lol

I think it was a foul even BEFORE the ball jumped off the table. You can't straight hit frozen balls. I thought it is a foul if there is simultaneous connection between the cue tip, the cue, and an object ball.
