I was an NHS nurse and starred wearing magnum boots & shoes for work about 10 years ago. The sole wearvincredibly quickly, doing typically only 15,000 steps per day. I've still got a pair of classics with the zip on the inner part of the boot. The Thinsulate lined boots were best, warm and waterproof, and double zips, but i had to replace them when the soles wore out.

The black Magnum Hitecs were very popular in the Aussie Army late 80s/early 90s. In some units you could just wear them and at other units you had to get a chit from the MO.

I used Magnum classic in black in the late 90s for security use. The soles split, and they fell apart quickly. I work in care work now and use Baltes jungle boots.

As part of the 2013 MOD Boot roll out, Magnum Scorpion boots in MOD Brown were issued under the Desert Lightweight Patrol category, ( they had previously been in Desert Tan ) the other boot in the same category was the YDS Desert Falcon boot. The MOD dropped that category during the 2018 roll out. Tenders are now being asked for the next roll out of MOD purchased boots which might take a couple of years before actually in the field

We sold these in Blacks in the early to mid 90’s, police and ambulance staff purchased black, and the soldiers purchased these. This was the time of the similarly coloured KSB and scarpa boots that were also popular with Royal Marines, and I was managing the Exeter branch of Blacks so close to CTCRM (1991-1995). In the early 2000’s I was gifted a pair of the Magnum Amazon from a Royal Marine who was issued them for Afghanistan. They were the sand coloured sole version

Scarpa boots were also popular with Russian troops at the same time, oddly enough

My dad traded a pair of these off of an American soldier during the Gulf, he said they were the best boots he's ever own and has been wearing Magnum's ever since.

As an American Soldier who has traded countless pairs of boots to most of the NATO Coalition, I was (and still am) shocked at the universally appalling quality of issue footwear.

The Magnums are pretty popular within the armed response community in South Africa, worn by private security personnel. Also some anti poaching units in South Africa are issued with Magnum Ranger boots although Jim Green African Rangers are the most desirable.

My mate (in the Royal Scots) swore by the old-style suede DMS boots I gave him prior to 'Op Granby'. Plus, he did say he wished I had an SLR to lend him as well!

mid 90s while in the infantry i went threw 5 pairs of these back to back ... they would last about two months of heavy field use. in the Late 90s they were banned from being used in my regiment, not sure if it was a MoD wide ban ... reason given was that they were not military spec and didnt offer enough protection. ... Some years later in Afghanistan they were being issued for use on base, (while Lowa desert elites were issued for use in the field)

That's exactly what I saw in the US Army (light infantry) in the early 1990s. The original black boots were popular for road marches (because they're basically sneakers - or what I believe you'd call "trainers"). Problem is they would fall apart very quickly under hard use. So, the Army officially banned them. I had a buddy (we were both brand new drill sergeants) who bought a pair, specifically for road marches. They lasted less than six months, and that was only being worn in garrison - so when the order came out that they were no longer authorized for wear (even as private purchase) we were not surprised.

There was a brief period (probably about 2 years) in the *very* early 1990s, pretty much overlapping Desert Shield/Desert Storm, where these (at least on the classic black form) were considered the "Cool Kids" boots in the infantry. Special Forces seems to be the first US units to buy them. And, yeah, they turned out to be absolutely inferior in the field. Super comfortable... and then they fell apart in a few months. The $35 jungle boots you could get in Clothing Sales were far superior. As for use in the Gulf in 1990 & 1991, well, almost nobody had access to the actual desert boots (buddy of mine from the 82nd Airborne said his battalion got issued them just in time for the victory parade when they returned to the States) unless they were assigned to high level command staffs - the geberals were fully kitted out in all desert stuff, while the grubts were mostly wearing jungle boots with the drain holes taped over (and often with the spike plates pulled out because they soaked up heat from the sand). If *anyone* wore the desert Hi-Techs in the Gulf War, it would have mostly been US Special Forces. I thibk the orders were issued in 1992 or 1993 that they were prohibited due to being absolutely unsuitable for service. I know that by the time the pfficial orders came down, they were known as "six month boots" in the infantry - tbey just wore out so fast. I'll note that i have a pair of the "official" black jungle boots I bought at Clothing Sales in the PX in 1992 or so for $35 (which was about half what the Hi-Techs cost, IIRC), wore as a drill sergeant for field or range duties, then wore when I returned to a line unit, and I *still* wear them for yard work. Its only been the past ten years or so they've worn so much I wouldn't wear them to go mucking about the woods. Still get polished every year or so, just to keep the leather going.

I had more foot problems with the black magnum classic that issue boots believe or not. They were too soft and lacked support for anything but barrack work, which obviously weren’t allowed anyway.
