The dial up internet was the sound of the 90s for me. The Microsoft Encarta program served as an interactive encyclopedia and it was certainly popular in our household. Who could forget that tall tower of DVDs almost halfway to the ceiling next to the TV and speaker.

My parent’s house was built in 1998, and it’s still pretty much a laundry list of most of these things; honey oak kitchen cabinets, patterned border in the bedroom, white kitchen appliances, recessed lighting, a big entertainment center, brass doorknobs and fixtures, etc. I guess I never thought about how little it’s been updated. But I suppose my home is largely stuck in the era around 2007-2010 too.

Our house in the 80's was full of gaudy, pastel colors, but when we moved in the 90's mom painted everything beige, and I'd gotten so used to the colors that I always hated it. At least we kept all of our wood furniture; I still have the VHS case that my grandpa made himself.

I like the wooden furniture. We had faux wood panels in house and aside from ripping up the shag carpet the wood panel stayed... But I did like the red and blue carpet. I called it the Red room in the Blue room. When I got two big for the Red room they moved me to the Blue room If I remember correctly and I think I do I asked for it to remain. You know what you just unlock a semi core memory!!!! If I remember correctly my mother asked me while I was going to sleep while she was putting me to sleep if I wanted to change the paneling and like they were doing in their room to be like a white plaster to match their white popcorn ceiling and said no. I think she tried to convince me and I just said no I like looking at the pictures in the woods panel. Whereas my dad would not have listened to me my mom actually respected my wishes and the wood panel remained. 😊

Glamour Shots was a concept where (usually) women would go to a photographic studio and have their makeup done, sometimes accompanied with feather boas and costume jewelry and have photos taken. That was big in the 90s as were one hour photo studios where you could have your picture taken (alone or with friends) and in roughly an hour you’d receive your photos. These were different from traditional portrait studios in that you could dress casually and have fun with the poses.

My Mom had a whole country theme going on in our house throughout the nineties. We had country/folksy wooden shelves and benches with cutout heart shapes in them, dishes and canister sets with apples on them, A wooden dry sink with a big giant water pitcher that sat in a big basin bowl, and hunter green and burgundy curtains and drapes

I totally forgot about Builder's Square! My 90s house definitely had all blonde wood and white appliances. My mom was in her "southwest" phase so the living room was shades of teal, mauve, and other dusty colors, with metallic accents (and wolves instead of angels). My grandmother was angels 😅 But I still have my entertainment center from that time! I never got into 650 inch tvs or whatever, and like to store stuff, so it works!

I can’t believe out of all the gaming consoles, you neglected to mention Sega Genesis. I mean, Sonic the Hedgehog was HUGE! I honestly don’t even remember Sega Saturn sold at any of the stores I shopped at. At least it didn’t have a playable display at any of the stores that marketed the other mentioned consoles.

The Sega Genesis was the underdog video game console. It secured 55% of the video games market at one point. The Sega Saturn was a flop outside of Japan 🇯🇵. It was released too early with a surprise launch which pissed off KB Toys so much that they refused to sell it ever since only stores like Toys R Us and Electronics Boutique, Babbage’s (later merged into GameStop). After about 3.5 years the Sega Saturn only sold about 9 million units. I do remember playing Daytona USA on Sega Saturn display kiosks at Toys R Us. All of my friends and I had either a PlayStation and/or Nintendo 64.

I'm a 90s kid who never made the transition to 3D. Still prefer playing 2D games to this day. I remember NES, SNES, and Sega Genesis being hugely popular well into the mid 90s. My first introduction to 3D was Doom on PC and its legion of imitators which I liked well enough, but it doesn't quite scratch the same nostalgic itch.

I grew up in New Zealand and remember many different interior design styles in the 90s. Definitely recall the sponge-ing and stencil, but also remember bold single-colour paint jobs, and that oh-so-necessary "feature wall" that was a pointedly different colour from the other walls in the room. Much Baroque and Tuscan influence, dried flowers, draped fabric, golds, deep reds, warm colours, lavender flowers, "deconstructed decadence", French rustic touches, and hardwood floors. I aspired to the more minimalist trend of off-white plasterboard, large tiled atriums, skylights, mezzanine floors, generous patios, and the newly-birthed realtor selling point: "indoor-outdoor flow". I was also fond of the style-blending and grunge-tingled aesthetic in graphic design, throwing mixed fonts and patterns at each other. Much fun.

Paying for the service and renting or buying the boxes wasnt cheap and was seen as an unnecessary expense for most people.. Eventually It did start to become cheaper or even included in the service for free and phones finally had it as an included feature (im not sure when that happened, definitely not till late 90s)

Good Lord, watching this brings back so many memories. I have a fondness for the 80's, but I was pretty young then. The 90's really is my decade and I miss it so much. We had just about everything you cited in this video in our house. In fact, the old house still has that freestanding ceiling lamp in it. It's the exact style shown in this video except it was an off-white rather than black. The only thing we didn't have was the sponge painting on the walls, but I do remember seeing it in other houses. My only conmplaint - or suggestion is that there was an absolutely HUGE neo-Victorian trend all over the country - yes even California, especially San Francisco. New houses looked old, neo-Victorian furniture, art work, flower pictures and arrangements everywhere!! Every shred of fabric had flowers. Hunter green was ubiquitous and elegant. Houses became very fancy as the 90's economy started to boom all the way until 2008. It was all quite beautiful.

I was a 90's kid so I remember alot of these. I remember my mom sponge painted her classroom ( she was a kindergarten teacher in the 90's), my mom and grandma had those fake greenery all over their houses. My parents a few years ago repainted their cabinets from oak colors, our trim and tables were the same color. I had a huge TV stand like the one you showed with built in rack underneath that had individual VHS tapes slots built in. My parents still have our big speakers. I had a pair of roller blades but my sister always preferred her roller skates. My parents house still has those bar hanging lights above their fireplace. I got a Playstation in 1999 when I was 8 years old. It blew my mind that I got one because they were very expensive for my family. I had forgot about gel candles my mom had a few.

1988 the first portable cell phone. Motorola 585 bag phone with big battery. Go anywhere with it. Analog not digital. I still have it today and it still works !!!

I used to pick up cordless phones on the high UHF bands of my old TV.

Before the internet, we used modems and visited dial-up chat boards (like a website). There were chat rooms, forums, games, and best of all, weekly get-togethers at local restaurants and bars. This is how we met 'online' people in a safe place. Epic parties I must say. Every weekend brought 100+ people. I was a system operator for a huge one in Dallas. This is how I met my husband. Back then, I had to explain the concept of online to people. They thought it was weird that we met through a computer. This was 1991. Now it's more common to meet that way.

Another thing I remember from the 90s. I don't know if it's just my region, the coffee shops it was a cool place to hang out. And eating bagels with rage in the 90s. I remember bagel shops in could go anywhere you would find different varieties. Keep up the great work! love and enjoy your continent. Brings back a lot of memories.

Definitely right about the furniture and appliance lasting decades! I was born in 90 and have had the same dresser my entire life. I finally gave it to my son 2 years ago (and my dad gave me his from back then lol) It’s as sturdy and works as well as now as it did back then! My night stand has been in my family since then as well.
