Remember it like yesterday, frightening, that Mazda was fast,they just hammered it all race long, sounded fantastic. Everyone knew the Pugs wouldn't last, but that Mazda win was totally unexpected . The first Mazda rotary was in a B16 Chevron, #40 sponsored by Levi's, it ran in the 1970 race.

I love rotaries but I'm not sure why everyone thinks rotaries were banned. Rule changes had nothing to do with rotarties.

You mean Bernie Ecclestone the mafia of the FIA and Formula One. Yeah he was the guy who changed the regulations so that Group C had to use engines that were inline with Formula 1 engines and thus making every Group C engine before the change obsolete. This included the 787b. This rule was not changed soley because of the rotory engine, it was for all engines from the Group C era. There is a huge misconception that is 100% based in myth created by people who love the the 787b. The 787b is not the fastest Group C car that ever lived. The rule changes came about because of money and reputation to Formula One. Group C cars were becoming much more powerful then Formula One at the time and so Bernie stepped in and put a stop to it. Plain and simple. The 787b and the whole banning the rotory engine because it was too good is just a myth. Fans of the car just want to put the car on a pedestal because it looks so cool and sounds so cool. Their love of the car blinds them from reality.
