1991 Explorer A4LD Transmission Shift Solenoid Testing

I perform tests on the Torque Converter Clutch solenoid and 3-4 shift solenoid as well as backprobe the computer to verify commands going to the solenoids. I compare the commands against felt shifting while driving to verify that each shift happens as predicted. I confuse myself in the video but explain things towards the end.

By chance did you compare gear ratios to the person who commented about the rpm? The 4.0L auto w /4x4 have a higher gearing than 2WD trucks. Just a thought. Keep the videos coming brotha this info is priceless. Currently trying to figure my shift issues as well, the trans is fine but it’s an electrical bug I can’t find yet.

I know this is an old video .. but I want to test mine. Can you please explain more in depth how you connected the meter. I know that volts are measured across source, amps require opening the circuit for measurements. My symptom is I can run the truck at 65 miles an hour .. as soon as I let my foot off the accelerator, I am in neutral until I hit somewhere near 43 mph. I then feel a nudge and and can roll back up to 65 if I want. I was told the solenoids commonly cause this ..but I want to make sure I dont have a degraded wire somewhere.

I purchased a 1991 Ford Explorer EVTM and it came with little notations on tape on pages in the book stating the TSB corrections for wire color of various circuits. Just so everyone is aware mistakes are present in this book.

Long shot for a reply on such an old video but my 90 ranger has pretty much the same engine and trans (I think) and it will not shift into OD at or around 55 mph? So not sure if it could be faulty computer or a shift solenoid? Speed sensor? What was ur fix?

I don't know that there was a fix for mine, it seemed to be working fine, at least for a vehicle with 231k and a rebuilt transmission. I would perform similar tests to see what you're missing for sure but I will say, these transmissions are notoriously weak. Could be as simple as debris or varnishing of the valve body, maybe new fluid would help. Or it could be a blocked passage, faulty solenoid, or more.

I think youve help me solve a problem my connector needs to be swapped changing 2 wire solinoid. Plug to 3 wire.

If the Shifter is placed in Overdrive then & only then does the computer command Overdrive.

The solenoids in this vehicle are working properly, no issues. I only did this test to demonstrate how and why to test them.
