My thoughts on the 1991 Ford Festiva with a 1.6L inline 4 cylinder swapped into it and a 5 speed manual transmission!

I bought an 88 Festiva LX in Sept of 87, it had the 5 speed. I loved it! For the price at the time, it was a great value. I got 40 mpg and drove it for a couple of years. It stayed in my family for about 6 years and 90K miles. It was fun for what it was and comfortable for long road trips with 2 people. It compared well enough to other cars of the era, Hyundai Excel and Yugo. I did break a camshaft after 5 months and 5K miles, but Ford warranty free repair and no other issues for the 6 years. No A/C, so I put in a pop up sunroof. 33 years later I still look back on it fondly. Great review!

One of my personal favorite trips back in my Festiva days was to take my 93 model Festiva out to the Jacksonville FL beaches where you can legitimately DRIVE onto the beaches in some areas. Backed it right up to the coast, crank the tunes and sit in the back hatch area. Legit kick up and take it in. Like a portable beach towel/umbrella combo.

I had a 91 Festiva GL. Hot Red was the color. I went on a 270 mile road trip and got 50 miles to a gallon.

1988-89 Manual cars were the only ones that were carbureted. 1989 autos, and everything 1990-up were fuel injected.

Paid around $6K for this in November 1991 at local Ford dealership. Drove it off the lot & thought I had died & gone to heaven. Mine was same red GL package with color-matching bumpers & external trim. What you did not mention was the automated seatbelts for driver/front passenger. Once drove on I-15 from Utah to Southern California into slight headwind & got only 37 mpg. Return trip with slight tailwind got me 50+ mpg. Put 95K miles on it before selling it in 2001 for around a grand - a helluva deal for the buyer as it was in very good shape. Yes it was badged & marketed in Australia as a Mazda as I come from there & remember seeing them in the late 80s. Very peppy vehicle with lots of interior space for its size because of the boxy shape. Loved the hatchback/rear lift-up door & fold-down backseat.

1988-93 Ford Festiva (designed by Mazda, built by KIA, & sold by Ford). I bought a brand 1990 Ford Festiva for $5,300 (after $1,000 rebate). 1990-93 were fuel injected. I drove my Festiva for 14-years. It never burned a drop of oil. The second owner drove it for a number of years after me. Any swap of the engine is a down grade in my mind. This was an impressive car for the money. 145SR12 tires were unstoppable in snow. The car was super dependable and always got in the low 40's mpg year round. I miss simple, affordable cars like these! No power steering, ABS, A/C, no traction/stability control, intermittent wipers, air bags, etc. The base model didn't even come with a radio or speakers. Super comfortable car to drive. If new ones existed, I would buy another one.

It's nice to see a Festiva that's not trashed. Amazing! By the way, the new Toyota Yaris hatchback IS the modern version of this car. Both cars were designed from Mazda.

Do you agree with Zach that the Yaris feels numb when driving it while the Festiva feels connected to the road? Thanks
@the4thnobleman
@the4thnobleman 3 ай бұрын
@@MisterRichHarris The Festiva has an excellent road feel to it. The body roll is just enough to be fun. Taking a corner you can feel it squeeze into it a bit then it just stops and digs in. Curvy roads are the MOST fun you can have in the Subcompact category for me personally. I can't speak to this 1.6 as my two had 1.3 stock engines(89 Carb 4 speed, and 93 injected 5 speed) are both geared to be a car that begs you to rev and zip zoom around. Power to weight offers a lot of the pep.

I had an 88. My friend Scott, who was over 6 foot gave the front seat to his girlfriend, and got in the back. I was worried. So I looked back and he said something to the effect of "I don't get how this is possible". With the seat all the way back, he still had room. Festiva had a low floor and tall roof. It was a short car, but they were thinking in 3 dimensions when they made it.

I had a 1990 Ford Festiva, I put 210,000 miles on that car and it was still running good. Only issue was the CV's started to go. Great little car. The only major thing I replaced was the alternator. everything else was normal consumables.

.....continuing my hopeless too nice to be crushed sickness ..........saved a 91 from the crusher, and now am missing only the dash clock to make it absolutely loaded with options ..... tilt wheel, A.C, rear wiper defroster, etc......of course the engine goes away, thinking about a 94 Twin Cam 1.9 Escort (Mazda) with the automatic of course ..............and I love the 12 inch "rally" wheels, getting a little pricey lately ......... cute, ridiculous, roomy, quick, all at the same time ......nice video by the way........

I had a 93 5 speed for 10 years, 91 should be fuel injected, my 93 was, nearly 50 MPG highway, older models had the 4 speed, newer were 5 speed--that 1.3 would run FOREVER and trouble free

Something else to note about the gauge cluster here. On the gas gauge there is no arrow pointing to which side to fuel on, which would be the driver's side in this car. After seeing all those videos where people claim all cars have that this disproves it. My 2006 Honda Element doesn't have a gas filler Arrow either. The Element also fuels from the driver's side. I always liked those little molded armrests in the backseat under the windows.. Last time I rode in one of these cars my arms are actually small enough to use them.

Also so 1988-1989 had carburators except for the 1989 automatic which had a different efi system then all the 90s festivas that had efi stock. also only the carby cars 88-89 had a 4 speed option. That is a very solid looking festy though. Another fun fact is the eBay Civic short shifter is a direct bolt on to these

In Japan Mazda sold the Festiva as a Mazda car. So you're not wrong in the slightest to say that this car is essentially a Mazda. Although I would say the car is a Kia first and foremost since they manufactured it under contract for Ford.

@@TheKreattion I should add, I don't know if Ford or Mazda contracted with KIA (a sub contractor who did not make their own cars at the time) but in communication with Mazda Japan, I found the Mazda 121 is a Mazda design, and first produced in Japan by Mazda, and currently in it's 6th generation. We currently own and race several, badged as "Mazda2" in USD configuration. These are still made in Japan. Edit: untill recently, Ford and Mazda worked together on some things, about 40 years of that.

My 4-speed 1991 Ford (fiesta) has a weak engine indeed, but I bought it knowingly as a city car and don't care much. I can imagine it's not to everyones liking though. I dislike the clutch, especially the reverse, but it'll do.

I bought a mint (no joke) Festival in the early 2000's for $100. Removed the passenger and rear seat. Cut the roof section off, and cut a hole over the carburetor & riveted a dryer vent on the hood as a makeshift hood scoop. Removed the exhaust. Had the most fun with that little thing. Best hundred bucks I ever spent.
