The Redskins were THE dominant team of 1991. They just rolled through to the title. The 2nd best team in the NFC was the Lions. Skins beat them 86-10 in 2 match-ups. The next best team was Atlanta. Washington played them twice and won by a total of 80-24. They led the Bills the entire Super Bowl including 24-0 at one point in the 3rd Quarter. They swept the Cards 54-14. They outscored 5 AFC foes 170- 95. The Eagles were shutout. The playoff bound Bears were easily handed down the stretch.

Niners we’re the best team in the NFL at the end of the season. Redskins thrived when the top dogs were out

Phil Simms should of been the starter in 1991. No disrespect to Hostetler. Simms's chemistry was much better with the team.

Agreed. And ultimately, Simms was just a better player. We saw in 1993 that he was still a very good QB that you could win a lot of games with. Hostetler did a great job down the stretch in 1990, but Simms had been the guy for almost a decade! Handley ruined his tenure from the moment he made that decision.

I wish Parcells and Belichick stayed. Mark Barvaro stays from 92-94 Mark Ingram Sr from 93-96 Bart Oates from 94-95 William Roberts from 95-97 Jeff Hostetler from 93-98 Ed McCaffery from 94-99, Dave Meggett from 95-98 Jumbo Elliot stays from 96-99 Leonard Marshall stays for 93-94 Steve DeOssie stays for 93-95, Carl Banks stays for 93-95, Mark Collins from 94-96 Erik Howard from 95-96 Mike Fox 95-98 Greg Jackson 94-98 Pepper Johnson stays from 93-98, Really though, Parcells and/or Belichick and Hostetler hurt the most

Rich Kotite, almost any Lions HC since Bobby Ross, almost every Browns coach since Marty, and a few others would kill to be slightly under mediocre like Handley was.

Yea but don’t forget Handley was 0-4 against Kotite and the Giants had more talent

@@williamstocker584They had more talent than Reggie White, Jerome Brown, Clyde Simmons, Seth Joyner, Eric Allen, Keith Byers, Keith Jackson, Fred Barnett, Calvin Williams, Heath Sherman and Randall Cunningham? Remember, the 3 previous years, Parcells only beat them once.

If Parcells stood they were a playoff team in 91 again. A lot of blown leads and bad turnovers. Handley completely mismanaged this team. The defense also changed with Belichik gone but Parcells pretty much installed that same system before Bill B became defensive coordinator.

Maybe. The NFC was brutal that year it probably wouldn't have got them far considering Washington was a juggernaut

Young whining about the expectations to repeat is pretty pathetic and disingenuous. The Giants won the Super Bowl the year before, follow two straight wins by San Francisco. In their previous Super Bowl win, their opponent, the Denver Broncos, made it back to the Super Bowl, while the Giants finished in last place. In 1991, their Super Bowl opponent, the Buffalo Bills repeated as AFC champions, and would continue to do so for the next two years. When they were defeated by the Cowboys, in a repeat. Repeats were happening all over the place and all around the Giants. Even one and done winners like the Bears managed to follow up with a 14-2 record! In TWO seasons after their Super Bowls, the Giants managed a total of 15 wins. The Giants did not fall short of impossible expectations, they failed to meet even modest ones.

1987 was a strike season. They weren’t even real players playing some of those games. Doesn’t really count.

@@DJR33333 Their record in non-strike games was 6-6. That is utter dogshit for a Super Bowl champion that had lost only a single starter, while improving its receiving corps and secondary.

The myth of the quarterback controversy in this camp was absurd. Crediting Hostetler as a Super Bowl winner like it's a credential is absurd. He eked out two narrow victories against last place teams to finish the season, barely beating the 1-15 Patriots & 5-11 Cardinals by a total of 3 & 4 points, then managed the game in a blowout playoff win over the Bears, where the defense was utterly dominant, and finally, was a non-factor in the NFC championship game against San Francisco, where they never once reached the end zone. The Giants offense relied heavily on the power running game, and while Hostetler played the game of his life, there is a reason he is the only Giants QB not to be named MVP of a Super Bowl victory. On possibly the greatest play of their best drive, when Mark Ingram went for 15 yards on 3rd and 14, breaking several tackles to move the chains, Hostetler "set it up" by throwing to a guy well short of the line to gain, with multiple defenders around him. Sims was under center for 10 of the Giants wins, and every win against a team that was better than last place. He should have been the QB from the outset, but Handley wanted to set his mark and tell the world that this was his team, he was not simply inheriting Parcells' success. And he showed the whole world exactly how good a coach he was. Ray Handley - "I can't make a bad decision." 1991 season - "Hold my beer..."

I agree. Hostetler was a better than average backup quarterback who could've started on many NFL teams, but giving him the starting job over Simms was unfair to Simms and an invitation for criticism. And Handley's handling of media questions about the quarterbacks was ridiculous and immature.

In all fairness; EVERY SB winner and loser regresses; age, each injury takes something away, some take a LOT away. Back then players had no choice draft team had all leverage and no cap so there were a few superteams that made most sundays boring. It's even harder now; 90% of players have a 4 year window of peak; and free agency means if they're truly great with 8 year windows there's a bigtime contract.

In modern era, It's mathematically impossible to keep 22 good to great starters without at least half on their rookie 4 year deal. But this leads to great fun to watch seasons, 17 sundays worth my full attention; anything can and does happen. EVEN teams that traded away every elite player like Miami 2019 the 'tank for tua' was really a masterful job at developing 3rd-7th round picks into decent units that could win, that DID beat the defending champion Patriots in a week 17 MUST win game for Pats.
