Good move on not disturbing the reservoir tank since the seals aren't leaking, leave well enough alone, many times the replacement seals are of inferior quality and will eventually leak later on. While I am a proponent of rebuilding most components on vehicles to not only save money, but to ensure the work done was by oneself, on a used car that I don't know it's history, unless the part needing repair is OEM, I usually won't rebuild it, just replace it with an OEM new part(if available). Rebuilding rebuilt parts(yes, that sounds very profound LOL) isn't something I recommend, the tolerances are already compromised when the core was initially rebuilt(I learned that the hard way years ago on a pair rebuilt rear drum wheel cylinders that I rebuilt again and they failed!) I very much enjoy your vlogs and your insightful explanation on how and why you're doing certain procedures. Cheers!
@janiilola58105 жыл бұрын
Yes, drum brake cylinder rebuild kit seals are meant to be used ONLY to replace OE ones, exactly because tolerances won't match like you said. This applies also to aftermarket brake cylinders ie. you can't (or at least shouldn't) rebuild them because there are probably slight differences in tolerances compared to OE. So unless you know for sure the cylinder is the original that the car came from the factory with AND that it hasn't been rebuilt previously, replace the whole cylinder. Better safe than sorry when it comes to brakes. Brake cylinders aren't that expensive anyway.

The only thing I'd be missing here is shop air; since brake fluid is soluble in water,i like to thoroughly wash everything,and then blow dry it; i use an eye loupe to examine the edges of the cups( even new ones,i only trust myself lol) and their seats for scratches/gouges/pits; paper or cloth can leave fibers,the brake cleaner you used, there is no telling if its residue will slowly degrade the cups,i would never use it there; but then again,you did 2 great jobs,doing it and showing it,using the brake fluid removed most eventual fibers,and you have a great knowledge of how the master cylinder works,better than most,better than i for sure; thanks.

If you have a rare, hard to find or unusual master cylinder on your vehicle and the bore is badly worn or rusted there are companies around who can bore them out and re-sleeve them, often in stainless steel, giving you effectively a brand new master cylinder. Most companies that do this are surprisingly cheap, though obviously if the bore is an unusual size then it's going to cost more as the stainless steel cylinder bore will probably have to be machined from scratch rather than being an off-the-shelf part. Some people don't think this is good practice, but a lot of race teams use this sort of service to create bespoke master cylinders to give the driver of that particular car the type of brake pedal feel that they favour, and brake failures due to master cylinder issues are almost unheard of...

Very interesting discussion on the quick take-up valve. I never even knew anything like that was in there. However, as I understand it (which could be in error), nothing in the combination valve actually moves under normal operation. The plunger inside it should only move if there is a gross difference in pressure between the front and rear sides of it, thus turning the light on the dash on. It is not uncommon for them to stick one way or another when that happens and require replacement, but, it's not so common that I would ever expect to rebuild one (or replace one... I've had one stick once and was able to work it free with compressed air). Another good video, FDP! (another thing worth mentioning... What I keep calling my "NoPro" in my videos, an Akaso action cam, is compatible with a smart phone app that allows remote viewing. So, fire up the cam, fire up the app, and watch your fluid levels and such from the driver's seat.. WELL worth the $50-$70 for the cam).
@FuzzyDiceProjects5 жыл бұрын
Good idea with the wireless camera! Hadn't thought of using something like that for bleeding. As far as the combination valve goes, check out the diagram in the video (kzbin.info/www/bejne/j5WrqGdsjLykbK8). A combination valve combines functions of both a proportioning valve and a metering valve (hence the name) and there is more going on there than just the pressure differential valving. The metering part is for front discs/rear drums and helps the drum brakes make contact and start braking before the discs in the front, and the proportioning valve is on all vehicles and reduces pressure to the rear brakes at all times. Both of those subsystems have their own springs, seals, and moving valves
@TheBrokenLife5 жыл бұрын
@@FuzzyDiceProjects I just read up on it some more and you're exactly right. There's a lot more going on inside there than I realized. Fascinating stuff that goes overlooked. Thanks for the correction!

I think it has like 20,000 miles on it, but I'm positive you'll be pounding the pistons out of the bores by now.
