The 928 was supposed to replace the 911, not the 944. I’ve driven the base 944, 944 turbo and the S2. The turbo was my favorite of the three, but the S2 was very entertaining. I’ve owned a 996 911 for almost 8 years. Fantastic cars, but would love having a 944 turbo for the nostalgia to bring back my eighties experience. Great videos!

As a 944 owner, you did forget to mention the rear transaxle which gives it such good handling and why it’s such a fun car to drive and take fast through corners

I enjoyed your review, however, I don't understand the point you're making about the rear seats. Those are the same seats that came in all models going back to 1984 (maybe earlier if you include the 924). In fact, in the 968, they began including only a cargo shelf and no rear seats at all. I am impressed you knew about new struts causing hatch delamination. Just FYI - the bridge spoiler on the rear hatch showed up in '91 on the 944 and was continued in it's next incarnation, the 968, although it gained an integrated third brake light. Also, those wheels never came on a 944. They did, however come as an upgrade on the 968 and several other Porsche models of the early 90's. You said something about the S2 having the same "widebody" as the Turbo - the fact is the body lines didn't change at all from the first models in 1982 (non turbo/NA). Only the front bumper cover, the rear lower diffuser and black trim pieces below the side rocker panels differentiated the S2/Turbo models from the NA and earlier models. No offense, but your history is all wrong. It sounds like you're confused with the history for the 928, which was developed to replace the 911 but was roundly rejected by Porsche purists who were offended that Porsche even wanted to replace the 911. The 944 came from the 924, which Porsche was developing under contract for Volkswagen. VW bailed on the project, so Porsche purchased the rights back from VW and developed the 924. In the late 70's/early 80's Porsche debuted the 924 Carerra, which had bulging hips. It was a runaway favorite based on its appearance, and led to Porsche putting it into production with a new name - 944. I have a hard time believing the Mazda had a better shifter. Please be aware that a 944 with 260k miles probably has worn bearings in its shifter. Replacing those and possibly adding a short shift kit would vastly improve the shifting. Many consider the Toyota 86, or the Subara BRZ to be the modern day version of this car, although, interestingly, those both have a boxer engine like early Porsches. One last thing - and I may have missed it - but I don't think I heard you talk about the transaxle (rear transmission plus rear axle) and the fact that this gives the car a nearly 50/50 weight distribution front to rear, making it one of the best handling cars of its time. Anyway - loved your video and enthusiasm for the S2. I'm a new subscriber.

Pretty much on point. It's the same rear seat from the 924 in 1976 to the 968 in 1993. Trim and styles varied and the last MY's of 944 could get a split rear seat backs like this '91 944S2 has. In 1994 MY the 968 front seats changed to the same as the 993 and the rear seats changed to match. The rear seat delete with a rear shelf was only in the 968 Clubsport cars and optional not standard. Unfortunately not an option for regular 968 either. The 944 Turbo badge panel, headlight covers and front guards are shaped different. I know you say the bodylines didn't change but the front of the 944 Turbo is pointier. They are not interchangeable with the 944 or 944S. The 924 Carrera GT (937) prototype debuted in 1979. It definitely heavily influenced the body shape of the 944 and even shared parts. A few of the 944 body parts have part numbers starting with 937 instead of 477 (924) or 944, e.g. the rear spoiler. I agree, this 944S2 is a bit tired and needs a little TLC. My 5 spd with Only944 parts and 3D printed shifter dampeners was tight and short.

Always loved these. So much better looking than anything that's come out over the last 10 or even 15 years. The design language is simple and clean. It looks like what a sports car should look like.

Same here. S2's are really in demand recently, understandable as it's the best one without the increased fuel consumption and turbo lag of the turbo, so perfect as a daily. But I too hope to oneday own one

Great content! I’ve driven a lot of cars. The S2 was one of those it was an instantaneous connection. That’s rare for that to happen within minutes.

C&D was a big fan of the 944 Turbo S very balanced handling. The 944 has a rear mounted transaxle with a torque tube running from the engine. So the driveshaft spins the same speed as the engine.

These are interesting cars on the used market. They're either roached out, traded from owner to owner wanting a cheap Porsche but unable to deal with the maintenance, or well-kept and well-maintained with high miles because they're great to drive. These can be reliable and rack up high miles if taken care of but don't tolerate neglect. The Cayman/Boxter is the replacement for the 944 as far as being the entry-level sports car. The 944/928 were a bit more grand touring oriented than the rear-mid-engine Cayman but the target market is similar. I don't see Porsche getting back into the front-engine RWD coupe/hatchback market because they've made rear- and rear-mid-engine their niche. Their competitors do traditional RWD just fine. No 2-door Panamera will be coming.

@@j1nx3d5 What's ironic about that? The Lantis is a good looking car, frameless doors, and it had a great little V6. 8k rpm ripper. I was shocked to see it in the video since it wasn't sold here.

@@OnlyTheFinest125 I still see them on the road here in Croatia...Back in the 00's guys used to swap in a 1.8L bpt engine from the old Mazda GTR hatch (turbo was around 200-250bph). That was a massive boost from the V6's sluggish 140bhp the Lantis originally had... For a 90s car with such a small engine and weight that was big hp... I also liked the MX-3 which had the smallest production V6 (1.8L) and the weird yet loveable MX-6... But the Xedos 6 and Xedos 9 were the ones everyone wanted, you felt like a company manager in one of those 😄

The 928 was supposed to replace the 911, that had a V8. It might be difficult to tell those two apart because they look very similar.

At point 0:39 you state 930 Carrera, and assume you mean either 'Turbo Carrera' (in which case your pic is incorrect) or you mean 911 Carrera, as the 930 is the 911 turbo

Good video, but you didn't really drive it. These need to be treated to a windy road and put through its paces. Also, the German engineering: it's immediately noticeable when you close the door. Nothing is so solid!

That's why I love the car. Having this many miles and the quality still as good as a low mileage vehicle it's special. Love how the pop ups are one motor. Not Duel. Galvanized steel. German quality at its finest ❤️

You have to do your homework before you make a video. As mentioned from another comment the 928 was going to replace the 911. Also you forgot about the 944S of 1987 and 88. Same engine but 2.5 liters. That's why Porsche called it the S2. The shifter was and is one of the best feeling sticks ever. I owned Nissan Z's and Mazdas but those shifters were very vague. The stereos used in the 944 were blauphundt units and are really good. Of course you were not born then so your opinion is a mute point.
