I love the digital instrument clusters that some cars had in the 80s and early 90s. In my opinion it looks way cooler than covering the dash in giant smartphone screens, like manufacturers today seem to be obsessed with doing.

I've had this car since Sept '20. You could tell it had not been driven much. It just passed 70K km and I had to do a few things, but overall it has been a great cruiser! * Replaced all caps in the ECU - fixed the ABS light that you see in this video. * Replaced the VSS (vehicle speed sensor). About a month after I started driving it, the speedometer turned into a random number generator. I tracked this down to the speed sensor on the bell housing of the transmission. Sourced a replacement from Japan and it has worked great since. * New shocks (it was even "rollier" than it should have been!) * New distributor (stock one started leaking oil after being awakened from its slumber) * Oil, filter and ATF fluid change. The ATF looked OK, but I noticed a little slipping in first gear. I cycled in about 9 quarts of Toyota Type IV ATF over a few weeks and it has been fine since. * New tires! * Full polish and paint correction. This brought back the shine and removed most of the A1 scratches. I've had the itch to bring over another one. It's so much fun, and working with Derek and team was a blast.

April 2022: Just about to pass 80K km! What a great car... It has needed a few more things: * Timing belt and water pump service (crank/cam seals, etc). No indication that this has ever been done and the belt was showing some small fractures. * Replaced pitman arm... which was VERY loose. Made a massive difference in how the car steers and handles. Next on the to-do list: I really need to refresh the factory audio. The factory radio desperately needs new capacitors. I'd like to pull the radio, change all of the caps, pull and replace the speakers which are showing signs of dry rot in the surrounds. I'll be taking this car down to Austin for Radwood Austin next weekend (4/23).

AD is what they called cruise control before it was called cruise control I guess. My 1996 JZZ30 soarer has the modern cruise control stalk, but when you turn it on an A/D "Auto Drive" light comes on the dash to indicate it's on.

The reason this has a storage box is that the Royal Saloon G had factory CDROM based navigation where the tape deck and stereo on this model. On the the G, the stereo is down low where the storage box is on this model. I had a '91 GS131 here in the States with the 1G-GZE 2 liter inline six with supercharger. Fantastic car.

I thought about picking one of those up! I saw several grade 4 GS131s. My original plan was to buy a UZS131 (4L V8) but the 30 year old air suspension just seemed a little scary. I also wanted to see what all the buzz about the 1JZ is about.

Love the videos and love the car! I'm in the process of importing a 95' Crown Wagon w/ a 1JZ and can't wait for it to get here (wish they offered the digital dash in the wagons too 😭). I was wondering if you've had/heard of mid-90s Crowns having issues with the capacitors in the ECU bursting? Apparently a common issue in similar era Toyota/Lexus, wondering if it extended to the Crown as well? Keep up the great videos, I learn something new in every one.
@obsoletegeek

Hi Adam, while researching this particular car, I did see that leaking capacitors could be an issue. It makes sense since the car is around 30 years old. I plan to proactively change all of the capacitors in the ECU just to be certain.
@kamikizekid
@kamikizekid 4 жыл бұрын
@@obsoletegeek I think that is the smart choice given the age of the caps and the "questionable" chemistry used in their construction. Glad to see this is a fairly well-known issue. Congrats on your beautiful Crown, great condition inside and out! I bet it will bring a smile to your face for years to come.

I know JZA70, JZX81, and early Soarer 1JZ-GTEs had the cap issue. Dunno about GEs.

I've had this car for a few days now and, for the most part, it runs great! I am seeing a few odd things like random ABS, check engine and "O/D OFF" lights flashing intermittently and inconsistently. I have the replacement capacitors on order and I suspect it'll resolve most of these weird issues. It's a blast to drive!
@kamikizekid
@kamikizekid 3 жыл бұрын
Glad to hear you are enjoying the car, I'd be interested in the condition of the caps once you get the ECU open. I'm wondering if they will be visibly swollen or burst with those intermittent symptoms. Good luck with your fix!
