Putting the handbrake between the front seats would expose a heat vent from the engine into the cabin. Since the engine isn’t front mounted putting it in the other locations wouldn’t work. Where it is means they just have to cable it to the rear wheels away from the engine bay. The Fiero has it there, and at least with the Previa, you can feel if it is up or down.

I had a 2WD vanilla version of this, it was a lot of fun to drive, RWD mind you, good balanced weight distribution helped with this. The only things I did'nt like about it were: only one sliding door, and the room behind the seats is very small, not much room for luggage if your van is fully loaded with people.

I grew up with my mom buying 1 of these when I was 10. 3 of us kids, well, this van was everyone's first car to get a driver license. Plenty memorable summer vacations with this van loaded up and twisting through mountains. All my friends loved this car. Piled up everyone and went to see Tool in this van. Sadly it got too sick after 300k miles and my parents sold it a few years back. Someone texted me a picture of it driving around last week 😂 wish my parents would have kept it 😔 probably would have had to replace a rear main seal and a few other items to make it worth keeping

You have to use a parking brake with an automatic transmission. Because if you don't, it will damage your parking pawl, meaning you can't put the car in park, leading to an expensive fix for a small broken part (it's very difficult to access, especially in something like the Previa).

My brother and his then wife had two of them when they lived west of Sydney Australia. I don’t know if either was all wheel drive but it probably wasn’t necessary as they probably never encountered ice or snow. They of course had the steering wheel on the right and I’m guessing that both were automatics.

Egg. An interesting attempt to break into the then-hot minivan market. Unfortunately the US minivan market was pretty traditional so these and the dustbuster vans were too far out. These continued in their egg shape in other markets for several years more where it was called the Estima and was available in different widths as well as lengths. You never see these any more which is a shame because they're so unique. Chrysler did manual minivans off and on for a few generations, some even available with the turbo engine. The Aerostar was available with a manual because it was basically a Ranger van. The Astro/Safari could be had with a manual because they were S-10 vans. None could be had with AWD and manual so the Previa is unusual.

The Previa S/C actually made more torque than the Chrysler 3.3 V6 (201 vs 194 lb/ft) in 1994 when it was introduced. The main reasons the Previa failed is that it looked really weird, was too expensive compared to the Chrysler vans and was too mechanically strange for most buyers at the time. At the time forced induction 4 cylinders were rare and mostly employed for performance cars, so people didn't really trust them long term even with a Toyota badge.

If they had to put the emergency break on the left, I wonder why they didn't choose a pedal like older cars.
@APham-ld9do2 жыл бұрын
I think it is likely because of the wheel well taking up the space that the emergency brake pedal would take. It may fit for an automatic transmission that does not have a clutch pedal, but the manual with a clutch pedal would have to have the emergency brake relocated. So I think they just settled on putting the emergency brake handle on the left.
@bazilwreckerloughead2 жыл бұрын
@@APham-ld9do Yeah, I never even thought about that.
@damilolaakanni9 ай бұрын
They couldn't put the parking brake in the middle, the engine was there. Putting it as a pedal in the driver's footwell could make most drivers confuse it for the clutch if it had a manual transmission (at least for the first time). So a regular lever near the driver's door was probably the only other option. Just a guess.

If only Toyota had partnered with Subaru so much earlier than they did, we could have had a mid engine, manual, all wheel drive, boxer 6 Previa. Speaking of the Previa, I worked on one of these once when I worked at a lube shop. It wasn't all wheel drive but it still had a drive shaft going to the front, not from a transfer case or center differential but from the front of the motor. I believe that was to power the cooling fan for the radiator. I was perplexed, you'd think an electric fan would have been more efficient.

!!! Use your handbrake/parking brake in an automatic. Always. Yes, it has a "park". But all this does is jam up the gears. It doesn't actually keep the wheels from turning. When you take your foot off the brake in park and feel that wiggle the car does? Thats the driveshaft/differential gears bending, flexing. It's not meant to hold the car, it's just meant to be a backup if the handbrake fails.!!! ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS ENGAGE THE BRAKE WHEN PARKING AN AUTOMATIC. why do you think cars have electronic parking brakes now? It's so that the car can apply its own parking brake because owners are dumb and don't do it.

That bfb test is really really stupid... Why do you insist on doing that test with such a giant and not that common bottle? Do the test with some more common sized soft drink bottles or cups etc... And regarding the car... Over in my part of the world, those used to come with a diesel engine... I think they were 2.2 TD engines... Usually automatics... Actually over here they competed with the Chevy/GMC Astro/Safari vans and the VW Transporter (4th gen)... Frankly... In my eyes they are special for their shape, but as cars? Mehhhh... And especially such a barebone version like the one in this review? IDK doesnt seem to me like such a good deal even back in its days...
