I was at this race. It was my first time at the 12 hour. The night racing was insane because it was so dark out (unlike Daytona where the track is surrounded by lights).

Anyone who got to experience Sebring in the 90’s really saw something surreal.

This was the last of the 17 Sebrings I’ve been to and the only one I ever got a press pass for. Camel Lite competitor Essex Racing was in my town and I went down to cover it.

The original 5.2 mile circuit was much more difficult, especially the long, rough airport straights, which were not used after 1982. (Finished 2nd overall in 1975 and 1st in 1977)

Japanese makers were mad for this races but that almost cost Nissan their bankruptcy.

You do know that Japans economy crashed in the 90s? That had nothing to do with racing, but the local economy crashing completely which affected every Japanese company and lead to the death of many great electronics companies who build amazing products in the 70s and 80s. The car companies only survived because american car manufacturers still weren’t able to produce a smaller, more fuel efficient car with modern engine technology. The French economy cars somehow never caught on in the USA and the small German Volkswagen cars still where too expensive compared to their Japanese counterparts, even if they had better quality. A lot of amazing HiFi products were discontinued because of that, even if they were much better and much more successful than the stuff that was available from western manufacturers.
