My camaro was an all original 3.1L from 1992 with about 280xxx miles on it, so I decided to do the obvious and put a 350ci in it, but i didn't want it to be just another 350 swap and i didn't have much money so i found an LT1 out of a '96 Chevy that had spun a bearing. It took a while and was a pain in the butt, but it was well worth it. I still have many more things to do but its finally getting close.

I had a 96 Trans Am WS6 Ram Air & 6 speed manual, with a Borla adjustable catback at full open and a few other bolt ons, man that car flew, I kept up in a race with an ls Vett, my car had 5 people plus me and the tires would still just spin into third gear, and the sound was amazing, sounded line a boat starting up and at wot or under load it sounded like a 70s muscle car, that's with stock exhaust manifolds & cats, Basically I'm saying the LS & newer LT's are great engines but just cost more for everything to do swap and some turn out amazing, but the 90s LT1 was the last of the traditional sbc and with some mods can be as or more powerful than an LS, My cars have only been TA's from 77 to 96 and a few trucks, I had to sell my 87 GTA for nothing to pay property taxs, I prefer the 82-92 body and really want a 91-92 TA or GTA convertible, had hard & t-tops but never sat in or saw in person a convertible, the 92 is the tightest third gen meaning less squeaks & rattles, and with sone brake/suspension/subframe mods I want to do a 96 Corvette Grand Sport LT4 6speed swap, just some head/intake porting - a throttle body - good longtube headers - a daily driver cam - Borla adjustable (like on my 96) catback - a coil per cylinder ignition and definitely a 96-97 WS6 style ram air hood with a working ram air box/filter, not the most powerful but I don't care what anyone else is driving or how fast they are, I just want to hear a killer American V8 6sp combo and go fast when I hit the gas

I clicked on this because I was like, "who the hell swaps in an LT1 anymore!?" Haha. But if you're swapping it into an V6 chassis and for $600 you can't go wrong! I agree with the decision to top it off with a carburetor too. The LT1 injection system wasn't terrible, but it really wasn't a massive improvement over TPI either. I rebuilt the 305 in my IROC and replaced the TPI in favor of a carb. Nice project you have!

@7erDave
@7erDave 10 жыл бұрын
Things I did: 1. Wiring - All I did to wire this was take the original wiring to the alternator, a/c compressor, pump steering pump pressure switch(can't remember if i did actually keep it), oil pressure switch, coolant temperature sensor, and the wires to the distributor (the distributor had some work done with running the original power and ground to it along with the original GREEN wire for the TACH, you need the wire to plug it into the HEI setup if you want the TACH to work on the dash, most people miss this and complain that it doesn't work). On all or most of these components you must change the pigtails to them so all the new components will plug in. I had to run a power wire to the electronic choke on the carb from the fuse box. All other wires to the sensors and fuel injectors were cut and disregarded. Then pull the SERVICE ENGINE SOON light bulb from the instrument cluster so it will not be on all the time. 2. Fuel - The fuel was sorta complicated at first but once you know what to do it is extremely simple. All fuel injected cars have high pressure fuel pumps for the injectors, this is not so for a carburetor (if you want a carb setup), about 45 PSI (F.I.) vs. about 6-8 PSI (carb). To get the pressure where it needs to be one must get a fuel pressure regulator from a parts store ( Jegs or Summit, or something of that nature). Once you get this you must cut the rubber line in the engine compartment ( the original lines the have fittings on both sides), cut them so you have a good amount of rubber hosing still attached to the car and not the part the will get taken off. There are two lines, the smaller of the two is the feed line and the larger is the return line. Hook them to the regulator so the feed line is on the inlet and the return line is on the side that drains the excess back to the tank (generally on the bottom side) and the last nozzle of the regulator (opposite of the inlet) goes to the carburetor's fuel inlet (on this portion of the hosing I put in a inline fuel pressure gauge (from Jegs). You can now regulate it to what PSI you carb calls for. 3. Suspension/ Mounting - The coil springs should be changed up front to prepared for the extra weight and better performance of the car to keep it from bottoming out over every bump. When the springs are out you are going to NEED TO CHANGE where you motor mounts are placed. The Camaro/ Firebirds & Trans ams all come with the motor mount holes predrilled for both the V8 and V6, do you will either move them forwards or backwards about an inch to the other set of holes that are drilled in the subframe. All other components such as steering and sway bar and shocks and brakes I left all the same as the 6 cylinder ones (my car drives just fine and handles well despite the fact the I did not upgrade them). You will need a driveshaft from a V8 car (can easily be gotten from Craigslist or a local junkyard for cheap). And finally you can keep the V6's original transmission mount. 4. Accessory Setup & Transmission You need to get the accessories for the engine that you are buying (obviously), you can't you the V6's setup. NOW BE AWARE!, not all setups fit, most do, but make sure the one you get works for the space, On LT1's the setup from the Corvette drops right in, but the setups from the LT1 Camaro's will require some moving or the lower subframe if you want the compressor to fit. Most truck setups will work as well I believe. As far as the transmission, you need one that is larger to fit the wide V8, the bell housings are different. When buying a transmission, DO NOT BUY a 4L60E (E means electronic), this will require a change in wiring and your ECM. Just buy a good 700R4 from another V8 Camaro/Firebird/Trans am so it will fit in without change and you will also have the correct gearing and shift points for a performance car. ** If I have forgotten anything, or if you have more questions just send me another message; I'm always willing to help fellow F-Body enthusiasts. Besides, this is all easily doable, I did this while going to college and working full time at 19 years old (20 now though).**

I have the 5 Speed trans... But if I was to go to my local junkyard pull a 350 car engine out of another thirdgen ( This one is throttle body) Would my trans and clutch bolt right up? Id like to keep my car a 5 speed.
@7erDave
@7erDave 10 жыл бұрын
Trevor Collins No the trans will not hook up, the bell housing size are different for the v6 and v8 engines. But you can get any 5 speed from a v8 car and it should fit, from any 305 or 350 engines, but make sure you get the correct flywheel for the ENGINE AND NOT THE TRANSMISSION, if you don't get the correct flywheel then the engine will not be balanced. You said this engine you are going to pull is a throttle body? If so are you going to keep that and not do a carb? If you are you got to look up the specs for fuel pressure from the fuel pump to the injection and make sure they're the same for both engines if you want it to run right. Also if you're keeping the injection you should take as much wiring as you can from the donor car in order to make the sensors work for the computer controlled fuel system. Speaking of that you need the computer from that car and you might as well take the whole wiring harness as well and just use the whole thing as compared to chopping up the old one, if you do this it will save you from a ton of headaches.

The compressor mounts down low and the alternator up top, the kit was a factory setup from a late 80’s early 90’s corvette that had that setup from the factory.

The mounts i got were generic chevy mounts for a 350 v8 that would've come in this body style car. They are the same as the car's original mounts i believe. The only difference was the mount location on the frame rail. The 6 cylinder cars mounted in a position a little forward or back than the v8 cars did. The holes are predrilled so i just moved the new mounts into the other position. As for a standard 350 to a lt1, the engine mounts are generic for the chevy v8's.

How did you wire up your alternator? I can't get mines to charge.
@7erDave
@7erDave 9 жыл бұрын
I had the same problem for a while, but i used the camera's original wiring diagrams and the new engine's wiring diagram and then took the new alternator's wire pigtail and spliced it into the original wiring harness on the car putting power to ignition, battery and then ground.

did you need to change the camshaft because of the optispark?
@7erDave
@7erDave 8 жыл бұрын
+Mathew Rainey No i used the original cam, it still has the gears on the back to drive the oil pump so a generic distributor will work just fine. all you need is an intake for the lt1 that has the hole in the back for the distributor.

a friend of mine is doing the same swap but have some problem to get a headers that fit in there can some one pls help me
@7erDave
@7erDave 6 жыл бұрын
The LT1 engine has the same exhaust setup as any chevy 350ci, so a set of headers that are made for the original 350ci engine that would've come in the car originally will work perfectly fine. I think i bought a set of Headman Headers for mine.

with the swap does the check engine light always stay on or does it just need some fine tuning?
@7erDave
@7erDave 7 жыл бұрын
I went from the fuel injected V6 setup to a carbureted V8 and am running without most of the sensors so the check engine light was always on until I removed its light bulb from the instrument cluster.

what brackets did you use for your alternator ? to be on the opposite side ?
@7erDave

I used a factory bracket setup from a 90's corvette that had the LT1, they were the only model to have the brackets on that side of the engine.

how did you block off the omni spark on the timing cover , our lt1 came out of a 93 firebird just trying to find more parts to be able to run it we knoe we need the intake but what about the timing plate block off is our main concern
@7erDave
@7erDave 7 жыл бұрын
Alissa Hubbard you don't need a block off plate, just leave the optispark in when you switch over to a distributor. I doesn't harm anything to leave it in and just not hook it up, it act as a block off plate itself. And you can find the intake you're looking for on Jegs.com, thats where i got mine at.

Why wouldn’t that trans have fit if it came out the iroc and it was stock it should have fit
@7erDave
@7erDave 5 жыл бұрын
redman58fla the stock engine was the 3.1L v6, so the stock trans wouldn’t work with a v8 application. I eventually went through 3 transmission with the last one being rebuilt by a shop so it’d actually work right. I ended up with a 700r4 from a pickup and swapped in a corvette servo to get the shift points correct.

@7erDave
@7erDave 8 жыл бұрын
+David Facio It could be if you put the fuel injection back in it. You may even be able to pass it with the carb if you put some type of smog system on it. Though as it sits the car is not CA legal
@sigersonholmes7758
@sigersonholmes7758 8 жыл бұрын
I don't live in CA. but I don't think it will pass with a carb. If I'm not mistaken you can not take any of the emissions off and the maf or map with the injection system should fall into that category.
@7erDave
@7erDave 8 жыл бұрын
it will pass as long as it meets the requirements set for the year of the vehicle itself. Now i am not accounting for the look test where they just check over the vehicle by looking it over instead of using a sniffer. I know that the city where i live it passed just fine, but its not like CA or other very strict cities with emissions regulations.
@sigersonholmes7758
@sigersonholmes7758 8 жыл бұрын
+David Senn I thought removing the E.F.I would cause you not to pass since the LT1 came with it and the accompanying sensors like throttle position map and intake air control sensors, etc. I could be wrong just thinking that in 2010 they changed that the engine must retain all emission equipment.
@7erDave
@7erDave 8 жыл бұрын
+jamie buchanon as I stated before, the area I am in barely checks emissions at all, what I did to the car is illegal to run in heavily controlled emissions states I'm sure, but it really didn't matter to me one way or the other. As far as what the engine had on it originally, I'm not completely sure, this is because I bought this early 90's LT1 (I believe a 92 block) after it already had its carb conversion done. Which meant all wiring and sensors were already stripped away when I bought it.
