One of the proudest achievements of my playing career was being a member of the 1992 Crossmen battery. While there are some recordings from that time period floating around, this is the one that occurred the latest in that magical season: DCI Quarter Finals on Thursday, August 13, 1992 at Camp Randall Stadium, Madison Wisconsin.
If someone has the Finals judges tapes, I would love to hear them, but as far as we (the other members of the '92 team) can tell, this is one of the last recorded performances that we have.
I believe the judge is Mike D'Angelo, and for those who are interested, this is a good snapshot of how good that ensemble really was towards the end of the season. Quality, quality, quality across the board, a now legendary drum book from Mark Thurston, and front ensemble book by Kirk Gay and John Evans.
We were lucky to have been Mark’s guys and gals for that season. We have all stayed connected to this day, almost 30 years later. Quality endures.
Enjoy.

These guys were smoking hot! Loved this when I first saw it on video and still love it today! I missed 5 years of drum corps in the 90’s ‘92-‘97. Would loved to have seen this live.

Just as I thought, the DCI finals recordings were junk. They were WAY cleaner on the field than the dual mic setup was recording. Which is a shame because I thought the finals run was muddy when it was just bad sound techs not knowing how to blend mics. Thanks for uploading this.

Saw these guys take down Cavies and, IIRC, Phantom at Massillon, OH. I was fortunate enough to catch them walking from a rehearsal to the truck before the show and a couple of snares were just casually chopping away while walking. The sound, the look, the playing, the book, the intensity - this line had it ALL at the same time. ‘92 was one of THOSE seasons where everything in DCI came together, before it all became the WGI Broadway show of the last 15-20 years. Pure magic. Thank you for posting this. I’m glad I got to experience it.

One of my favorite DCI memories over the last 32 years of following was the convening of the snare line at time mark 7:40 or so to move into the feature. The grove, the hands, and passion in the feet, the intensity of presentation of that line coming forward to show their stuff. That was a performance moment for the ages. Kudos for being a part of that historical line!

1992 was my first year marching drum corps (Magic of Orlando snare line). My high school drumlime captain, James McKey was in Xmen's front ensemble. This was my fave show all summer, HANDS DOWN, Esp bottom bass during the percussion feature. THUMP-THUMP, THUMP-THUMP.

One of my all time favorite shows EVER! I got to watch the corps rehearsals several days while the corps was preparing for a show in Pittsburgh, PA. After watching the rehearsals, it made me want to join a corps! I marched with the Golden Lancers in 1995-1996-1997, auditioned and made the Cavies in 1998, but was unable to accept a spot, due to not having enough money for tour fees...

The chops on this snare line is and was unbelievable!!!!! I think the rest of the snare line had to drop their snares down a bit to somewhat match up to the snare player on the end since he is so short. Lol So I’m thinking the rest of the line had to raise their chops. And boy did it enhance the snare line chops. I think this was the beginning of how lines have become playing really high sticking now. Between 88 and 2000,s it was more about having very low sticking with only high accents and rim shots. These guys in crossman 92 did not follow those sticking heights. They rammed everything out which made them stand out from the rest. This drum line is in my top 3 of all times!!!
