Let’s not forget that Christian Latner was on the dream team, but none the less, it’s a dumb irrelevant point either way. If we’re objective, it’s the redeem team. Had magic and Larry been prime, it would be a different story and worthy of the debate. Furthermore, about the point differential, Let’s remember that basketball wasn’t what it was in 2008 on the world stage. The world is much better at basketball and is very quickly catching up to the US.

People also forget that how both teams practiced and trained together were completely different. America was embarrassed that a team of NBA superstars couldn't bring home gold anymore in '04. So they put together a state of the art training program to develop the players into a real team unit before the '08 Olympics. I remember watching the training camp on NBATV. It was crazy. The Dream Team didn't do any of that. Their practices consisted only really of pick up games and basic drills. Chuck Daly threw their first game against some college kids, told em "you could lose" and that was it really. Those dudes went on the court and dominated with talent alone. They weren't really "coached". They didn't really have team plays or strategies. Just playground basketball. Chuck Daly never once called a single timeout in the entire Olympic games. So yeah world competition has improved, but so did America's preparation. I have no doubt in my mind if the dream team went through the same preparation that the '08 team did they would win out of a 1000 games 85-90% of the time.

Difference is Magic and Bird were off their prime... that makes things closer and the fact competition in 2008 was way better... still name by name the dream team has a slight edge, but I still pick the 2008 team coz they were a better constructed basketball team and better defensively (a lot better). Now, looking back, if you consider talent alone and how their careers played out, even though they were on court the most vulnerable out of the 3, the 2012 team is pretty damm insane, now the Dream Team had 4 bigs (excluding Laetner) that are all time greats, top 20, but damm in 2012 you have kobe, durant, lebron, harden, chris paul, wesbtrook and a prime Melo (and even Anthony Davis and Kevin Love) and in 2008 you have Chris paul, Jason Kidd (he makes a huge difference), prime Deron Willians, lebron, melo, kobe, prime wade... I think the Dream team took one more big than they needed to, by using Laetner. Even with MJ, Pippen, Drextler, Stockton and Mullin, when you consider that Bird and Magic were way out of their primes (especially Larry who was really hurt by 92), the dream are inferior on the perimeter and on the wings, especially defensively, adding to the fact that both the 08 and 12 team used Laetner's spot to pick another stellar defensive win (Prince in 2008 and Iguodala in 2012). Now the thing is, the difference in talent is so big on the inside that if you go name by name the dream team still will win; I mean Ewing, Robinson, Barkley and Malone are a pretty much unbeatable group, but the thing is both the 2008 and 2012 teams didn't even take 4 bigs, much less 5. They took 3 bigs (Bosh, Howard and Boozer in 08 and Chandler, Davis and Love in 12) and played a quicker and more agressive game on the perimeter. So going by how the game is played, and by the fact that the 3 spots occupied by Magic, Bird and Laetner would make a big difference I would pick the newer teams. Remember it's a game, you are not analysing a roster player by player, you are playing a basketball game, of course Mullin is better than Iguodala, Redd and Prince, but neither of then are playing the role of franchise player there, they are part of a structure, an engine, that's why going 1 by 1 comparing players is a wrong way to study the game. If it was like that, the 04 team, as much of a mess as it was, would still run through everyone, it is how the parts work together and how you choose to play as a team that makes the biggest difference, baketball at the end of the day is still a team sport. Actually, if you ask me, out of the 3 teams, after a solid preseason and training camp, I would pick the 2012 squad as the strongest and most solid one; they have the edge over the 08 team as you basically switched Prince for Iguodala (advantage 12 team), Boozer for love (advantage 12 team), Kidd for Westbrook (advantage 12 team duo to the role both played, as Wesbrook was much younger, more athletic and a better defender at that point, and Kidd's advantage, which would be the floor general role, was on the hands of Chris Paul on both incarnations of the team), Wade for Harden (advantage 08 team, Harden was a beast, even in 2012, but it's prime Wade we're talking about), Redd for Durant (Jesus fucking Christ), Bosh for Davis (yeah I would give it a tie, sure 08 Bosh is a lot better than a rookie Davis, but considering what he has become, I gotta give it a tie) and Howard for Chandler (advantage 08 team). Also of the players that remained, 2012 Melo > Melo, 2012 Lebron > 2008 Lebron (although both would be like 97+ overall on a video game hahaha), 2012 kobe < 2008 kobe (but Kobe until 2013 was still on an all time goat level), 2012 Willians = 2008 Willians (that was the last good year for him, really weird how his level dropped that suddenly) and 2012 Paul > 2008 Paul (less athletic, but even smarter and just as great on defense). So even though the dream team has 4 unbelievable bigs, they ain't gonna play at the same time and as much as some don't like it, the way the game works collectively the bigs depend more on others for creation and are at the end of the plays, not at the start of it, so the absurd edge the 92 squad has in terms of talent on the 4 and 5 positions on court wouldn't really be that imposing on a 5-5 game where you have another team that has the slight edge on the other 3 positions, given that those are the positions that teams run their plays through more (even the dream team, with all that talent inside, played a perimeter orientated game)

For some reason, people think that they HAVE to say early era players are better at everything. A front five of Iverson, Kobe, KD, Lebron and Shaq would wax the floor with any team, from ANY era.........and the older the era, the more dominant mentioned players would be. Athletes don’t get worse over time, they get better.
@MrGyonex6 жыл бұрын
Obviously most people here are just too young to know. Funny you all bring athleticism like humans have evolved that much in 15 years!!. Those guys in 92 could run and jump with any of them, and won't be surprised if it turns out they were better. Players back in the 90'a looked skinny but most were ripped and strong, is just people tend to confuse mass with strength. Go to the gym once to see for yourself just how wrong you are. and remember, old/no knees MJ at 40 torched this "super athletes"of the 2000's. I have been following basketball since the late 80's, not just the NBA. Teams from the 90's were really good, some of their players kept playing at a high level and dominating their respective leagues until they were 40+. Most of the international stars did not play in the NBA not because they were not good enough to play, some of them were seeked by the NBA and just straight refuse to play, others had styles that were just not "attractive" to US basketball experts. There were a lot of shooters and shooting was frown upon in the NBA. So I wouldn't say Int. basketball is a lot better now than 20 years ago, is just that more people in the US know about them and like all good "americans", once they know about something that knowledge becomes absolute. Another thing to consider is that Team play have been on the decline with professional players playing for the US. That's another reason the world has "catched up"with the US. Some of these Int. teams practice regularly as a team, while team USA just have a couple of scrimmages before tournaments.

JuanyeeHTVB23 the dream team was better but the amount they outscored them means nothing. Euroball had not developed at all at the time. The level of comp in Europe and other countries has gotten much better since then. Back then countries outside the US didn't give a fuck about basketball.

I hate how they are taking about the legacy of the players rather than how those players were at that time. She keep dissing D-Will and Dwight Howard but at that time D-Will was a all star caliber point guard and Dwight Howard was "Superman". Dwight was sending every shot in the paint. Give those guys the credit they deserve at that point in their careers.

Magic and Michael are the GOAT backcourt and the dream team's bigs are too much to deal with. Not sure who's gonna stop prime Barkley either
@Luckymag-if4dw5 жыл бұрын
MAGIC HAD RETIRED IN THE 90/91 SEASON... this is not prime Magic ok? give you an example, 2008 Kidd and 2008 CP3 are easily better players than 92 Magic Don't get me wrong of course Magic is the greatest point guard ever by far, but I'm talking about the player he was when he played for the dream team, same with Bird, who could barely run by the end of the 92 season and had decided to quit basketball before he got the invitation... this isn't 1986 Bird we're talking about. So when you start to consider that and look at the 08 and especially the 12 team (of course they were the most vulnerable out of the 3 but with training and let's say a preseason for all of then I actually think the 2012 squad would be the best out of the 3) have a huge edge on defense and on the 1-3 positions, which for me makes a bigger difference than going name by name. The 92 squad doesn't have any good defenders at the 4, had only 1 good defender at the 3 and 2 and had only 2 point guards, one of which (Magic) was out of shape and couldn't defend (Magic is a top 5 player ever for me but even I admit he was always a below average defender who got away with bad fundamentals on that end coz of his size in comparison to his matchups). I'm thinking about an actual basketball game instead of going name by name, coz that's not how things work in a team sport, specially basketball, if not the 2004 team, as much of a mess as it was, still would have easily beat everyone in those olympics. In 08 you have Kidd and Paul on the 1, Kobe and Wade on the 2 and Lebron and Prince on the 3 (talking only about good to great defenders), that is a huge difference defensively. For me, the 1-3 positions are always gonna make more of an impact overall, even the dream team played a perimeter orientated game, and when you go by it, both the 08 and 12 teams have 2 extra players on the perimeter and wings, so even with the absurd edge in talent that the dream team has on the 4 and 5 positions, on the court, in a 5-5 situation, I think as a team the other 2, if well trained and prepared, are better constructed squads, especially the 2012 one. They even have that singular defensive tactical wing player who's athletic on Prince in 08 and Iguodala in 12; now if you went simply by picking the stars those guys would have never made it in the team, but really going just on the balance of a roster, picking then seens to me like a really really good move. So for me both the 08 and 12 teams are better from the 1 to the 3, but the diference is really small, while the dream team is so but so much better in the 4 and 5 that it really makes then clearly more talented overall, even with Laetner there; but as a basketball team, I prefer the newer one, due to shooting, defense, speed and lengh. And so my conclusion is that the 2012 team is the best one to be trained for a simulation season let's say; the only thing that would make then better would for Wade to play in place of Willians. But even then for me Paul, Willians and Westbrook at the 1 are better than Paul, Willians and Kiid and Magic and Stockton (remember considering the year in which each of the teams were formed and the 92 team has one less poitn guard than the other 2), so the 12 team is the best at the 1 spot. The 08 team is the best at the 2, as it's a virtual tie between Kobe/Wade and Jordan/Drextler (sligh edge to the 08 duo there, duo to defense and the fact I think prime Wade is better than Drextler a tiny bit more than MJ is better than Kobe) but you add the extra shooter in Michael Redd to the 08 duo, and both are a bit better than Kobe/Harden from 12. As for the 3, I think the 12 team has the strongest single position out of all those teams, with Lebron, KD, Melo and Iguodala, even if Lebron and Melo played as 4s at times; then I would go for the 08 team with Lebron, Melo and Prince and then at third the 92 team with Pippen, Mullin and Bird (again Bird could barely move by the olympics). And on the 4 and 5 the dream team is so much better than it's not even worth comparing, but you see they lose in 3 out of the 5 positions, they seen more talented overall (ans really are indeed more talented) coz the newer teams didn't have much talent inside in comparison to the mosnters from 92, but on a real game I do think the newer squads are better constructed to play with one another

Dwight in 2008 was way more athletic than Ewing, but him vs Robinson would have been nice. Remember this isn't a debate of who had the better career, this is just specifically 92 vs 08. Old magic and old Larry couldn't guard D Wade Wade and lebron. So the dream team lineup would have had to have been MJ, Clyde, Pippen, Barkley, Robinson. And I just think that D Wade, Kobe, Melo, LeBron, Dwight would give them a great game. The dream team Bench was better tho for sure. But 2012 with Wade, Kobe, Melo, LeBron, Durant is beating any tram ever assembled. Cp3, Westbrook, Harden,, Paul George on the bench too.

They going up against Prime LeBron, Prime Kobe, Prime D-Wade, Prime Bosh, Prime Melo, Prime Dwight Howard, Prime CP3, and a Prime D-Will. People sleep on him like he wasn't arguably the best point guard in the league for a while. And Michael Redd was slept on. And Boozer was averaging around 20 and 10 at that point in time as well
