A.P. Indy stumbled badly at the start, but in case he didn't, I think he wouldn't have beat Pleasant Tap, and he would've been second best.

Eduard: Gotcha. Any horse that can run a mile and a quarter in 1:58.8, better than Sec's in the "Derby no matter what happened during the race, has nothing to be ashamed of, to apologize for. Remember in 2005 when around the far turn Afleet Alex was hit by Scrappy T in the Preakness and went to his knees??!!! He gut up and won easily. No excuses

I agree that any horse running the race that Pleasant Tap ran deserves all the accolades. That was quite a run. Of course, Secretariat's 10 furlong time in the Derby was as a three year old at Churchill (JCGC is at Belmont), where he still holds the track record despite numerous Breeders' Cup Classics (with the best older horses in the nation) having been held there since. He was only one fifth of a second slower (1:59 flat) in the first ten furlongs of the Belmont Stakes, not restrained, but certainly not urged or driving at that point. Afleet Alex was nothing short of remarkable in the 2005 Preakness. What a courageous little horse. AP had his size against him (harder to change momentum for a larger mass with a higher center of gravity), and that it happened at the start of the race, when all of the other horses were fresh and could put distance between themselves and him. Still, it would have been a tall order for any horse in the race to beat Pleasant Tap on that day, even if there were good trips all the way around. But AP Indy got his revenge in the Classic that year!
