We lived in Palm Springs at the time and I will NEVER forget those quakes! We were immediately awakened from our sleep that morning! We ran to our parent's room! We were watching coverage on TV when the Big Bear quake struck! Thank You for sharing this coverage!

@@johngligo4049 heck yeah it was!!! I went outside during the second one that day, and i laid on the ground, and i saw the desert floor make a huge wave like a rolling wave in the ocean. I was in the middle of flat unpopulated land, so i saw the wave roll far for a long time. We had large long deep cracks in the ground near us too.

The Landers quake scared me bad. My patient's bed rolled side to side and I was on floor 3 of the old Riverside General Hospital that was built like late 1800s, the part I was in I think was built early 1970s.

That was a proper Earthquake. I recall my friend and I (Then teenagers) getting into his uncles 1973 thunderbird to go survey his "property" after the quake. We sat in the back while they got absolutely hammered as we drove from Norwalk to Landers.... His Property? A cinderblock hut out in the middle of no where....If you see this Mike...Hit me up you lost soul.

I was in Santa Monica and the shaking was very strong. The water was capping both ends of a pool by a foot. Nearly brought down a big oak bookshelf/entertainment center. The two together were unusual.

Yucca Valley as of 2006 reminded me of the SoCal vibe of 1980; the open friendliness of the people helping one another out.

My Aunt still lived in Landers on Phillipe Ln, named after my Uncle who first graded it. I remember going with my Dad to go make sure his sister was Ok as there was no communication. Huge cracks in several of the roads. She was shook but unharmed

We lived in West Covina! Our parents had waterbeds, we had a butterfly ceramic chandler in the living room and a sliding wall that was between my sister's and my bedroom. It would rattle when shaken and was loud AF! The whole family knew when we even had a slight movement. I remember we kept having quakes and our parents kept promising that it was the last one. Boy, were they wrong. "Oh the So-Cal 90's"!

I was glad that I stumbled upon this video. I can honestly say that I know what it’s like. I live in Ridgecrest where in 2019 we were hit with a 6.4 followed by a 5.4 and finally a 7.1 the following day. I guess only those of us in the Mojave Desert can understand how a community comes together after a big earthquake. Instead of waiting for help, everyone just kind of starts helping each other. You think anyone in Los Angeles gives a rats a$$ about an earthquake in the desert? I am sure the people in Yucca Valley/Landers realized that in 1992 just like we did in Ridgecrest.

We lived in Palm Desert at the time. It was around 5 or 5:30 AM. I heard a rumble and jumped out of bed and yelled "earthquake"'. We had a plan for it: My wife and 14 year old daughter would run to the garage and get in the car, while I would go to my baby's room and get her, then go to the car, drive through the garage door if we couldn't open it. The first part worked fine, as my wife and daughter were in the car, but the shaking was so severe that I could not maintain my balance, so I just put myself over my baby's crib, covering her for possible falling debris. It lasted for about 40 seconds, and my house was in one piece, except for a few pictures that fell from the wall. I left the house and went to check my mom, in Bermuda Dunes, finding her calmly sitting at the garden with a neighbor. I brought her home in her nightgown. At around 8 AM we had a 6.5 aftershock. But we didn't even leave the house then. Anyone with traumas hasn't lived in SoCal long.

I was at my grandmothers in Vegas when this hit. It sounded like a train was going through the house. Like for real it seriously sounded like the rumble from a big train. The chandelier was swinging back and forth very violently. The water in the pool was splashing out as if it the ocean. And as I walked down the hallway to my grandmothers room I had to hold on to the hallway wall so I didn’t fall. It was so scary.

I was staying the night at my mom's in Cherry Valley so we were pretty shaken. After I went back to work I was assigned to do Red Cross damage assessment. It was so quiet there. I saw the whole back wall of the bowling alley laying on the ground.

What a ride that morning. I lived in Big Bear when that hit. It shooked for ever up there. Then, while we were checking rental cabins later I was driving back home when a quake hit there. I was right in front of the sheriff station, and that was weirdest feeling I ever had going airborne in my suburban. My house had my neighbors chimney in my kitchen when I got home.

I happened to be driving when the first quake hit; a bunch of electrical transformers in the area simultaneously arced with the green glow, the radio went to static, and the tires and shocks on my truck all felt like they were moving in a different direction, all at exactly the same time. My first thought was that aliens were landing, or nuclear bomb had exploded, it was a pretty surreal sensation, it wasn't until I saw people coming out of their houses that I knew what was happening. I found the surface disruption caused by the quake to be very interesting, mainly because it was so plainly evident, I spent many days just going out in the desert searching for the geological evidence of the quake. The area around Galloway Dry Lake and the old bombing range and iron mines was really pretty neat, the "mole hill", it seemed like the whole area was kind of sparkling, I assumed it was from rocks being tumbled and fresh surfaces being exposed to the sun for the first time, I don't know, there was definitely a different kind of energy going on there immediately following the quake. It's kind of funny how "primitive" Yucca looks in these videos, I don't remember it feeling that way at the time. Thanks for posting this video!

Was in Desert Hot Springs (outside of Palm Springs) when this happened 😮. Scariest moment of my life! 2nd story of a condominium & almost shaken out of bed. Once outside I watched the swimming pool look like a tsunami & looked to the mountains seeing trees moving, hillsides waving & dust rising. Cars jumping up and down in the parking lot... devastating experience.

We had a weekend home in landers was only 1000 sq ft but with 3 car detached garage. Honestly other than a bunch of broken dishes? (everything flew out of cabinets) Did not ness up the home or garage ....glad we were not there though we immediately drove out to check property. The area around the home was all thick sand/dg and the amazing thing was the old 3/4 ton ford pick up we kept out there had obviously "hopped" around as you could see everywhere it landed after bouncing! It had oversized offroad wheels and worn out shocks so it was pretty bouncy I was AMAZED how far the tire depressions were apart! The truck seriously bounced several feet! idk how the house stayed together so well but she did! Much of that home was the original cabin built in the 50s but it had a gabled roof 400 sq ft addition also

I was with the last group to use Camp Radford near Seven Oaks. Los Angeles County 4-H Summer Camp ended the day before the quake hit. It's a good thing that there was always a one day gap between camps. The lodge was heavily damaged. The massive stone fireplace collapsed, and with it, part of the second floor of the lodge went with it. Since the quake, several attempts have been made to repair the damage. None have been successful. The camp is owned by the city of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. Every time funds get appropriated to repair the damage, it gets mysteriously moved to other projects. The kitchen/mess hall sustained moderate damage and was repaired. The large cabin (cabin 1) was repaired, but the historic lodge only saw a minor clean up. The roof collapsed due to the chimney falling and the second floor has been exposed to the elements since the quake. At this point, it's doubtful it will ever happen. Very sad.
