Nothing short of brilliant. Reminds of a road trip I took in the early-mid 80s I was driving through this area and I didn't know what I was driving through. Later when I got to "know" California better, I was a transplant from the East Coast and I told myself I was going to drive through the area again. Wow - brilliant overview and so well presented. I should have done a bit more research and I could have done this drive and stood over/on the San Andreas fault. We went right by on Hwy 166 on June 7, 2019 ... it was obvious we were in a geologically interesting area but we managed to miss knowing we went over the fault. I recall going by the old 76 gas station at the intersection of Soda Lake & 166. Need to research the Hwy 66 reference. This was alot of work you did, and much appreciated! GREAT TOUR!! thank you!

I've been by Soda Lake road many times on my way from Ojai to the 5 on my way northern California and back again, and I've always wondered and wanted to go take a drive down that road. Really, really nice coverage. Really nice. I have driven out to Hudson Ranch Road from Maricopa and up to I5. It was remarkable. I found out years later it was along the fault line. Driving up to Frazier Park from Grapevine places you straight in front of the fault line. There is a slope cut by a very large embankment. Yup, you are there. And, then there is Leona Valley. YIKES!!!!!

I LIKE the fact that Mr. "BRW1" mentioned Hudson Valley Rd., which becomes Mil Potrero Road. Now that's a road, TOO. It's a road that runs along a very high ridge--with almost a cliff dropping thousands of feet towards the San Joaquin Valley--exotic pinnacles about the cliff face--through Pinon Pine/Juniper woodlands--leading towards Mt. Pinos. Before you reach that, you're going through some grand forest, featuring STUNNING large Jeffrey Pines, with their metallic alligator-hide copper-colored trunks. From the parking lot near the 8,000 Ft. summits of Pinos/Sawmill Mountain, it's an easy stroll to Pinos' summit. On an extremely clear day, you can see right into Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. Look even closer with your Eagle eyes, East-Northeast, at the mid-elevation dense forest, and you can make out the domed crowns of Giant Sequoia trees looming above the rest, in Giant Forest and Redwood Mountain. You shall NEVER forget THAT sight--plus the Pacific, in the opposite direction, 60+ Miles away! Where else . . . but in California??

I had my camera packed away, my phone off, and the plane made a 90 degree turn over Carrizo Plain giving a full view of this entire route. I kicked myself for not having a camera always ready, "just in case". Google Earth is nice, but it just doesn't beat seeing the real thing and at the right perspective.

Hello: I know the Carrizo better than some, and I think your video is very well thought thru and laid out. For your next video, might I suggest one thing more in your scripting; GPS coordinates in decimal degrees for each spot such as where the fault line crosses Route 58, etc. Most folks who use GPS to find areas have their gear set to decimal degrees because it's the easiest set up for typing coordinates. Just my two cents.

Yes, Bitterwater Rd north of 58 follows the fault line - all the way to Hwy 46. Look closely on it on Google Earth or satellite view. Any road cracks after a period of time in that area because of the ground movement.

You missed the remains of a huge old long tom mining operation on the west side of the road in a gully. If you had a half-way decent microscope, you could have taken a sample of the water at the north end of Soda Lake and seen a lot of microbes and beautiful tiny sulphate crystals in the water.

LOL - little do people know, but cracked roads from fault movement are all over California. And yes, when the fault moves on a major freeway, like I-5 or I-15, the southbound lanes will empty onto the northbound lanes!

I'm curious, if the fault slips about 1.5" a year, why isn't the roadbed shifted where it crosses the fault? I mean, that road has probably been there at least 30 years, so I expected to see if offset by as much as 45", but don't see any offset at all at 8:59.

Good point. I think the same thing with I-15 crossing the Cajon Pass. But closer to Carrizo Plane, there are roads that you can find that have been "sliced up" over time. But the road crews typically fix it (patch it up) pretty quickly.

Third, on this tour, there isn't much more to say. If you don't like the music, turn the volume down, because it's pretty much all about the visuals and the few captions to read. Yea, I don't know the reason. During the 1960s and 70s, there were a lot of real estate boondoggles where big parcels were divided into lots and sold. Lots were probably separated by those roads. I'm only guessing though. This did happen a lot in the desert near Palmdale & Lancaster north of L.A.

The North American plate is moving towards the West. That is the reason the Pacific Rise spreading ridge is now in the Sea of Cortez, subduction volcanoes no longer erupt in S. California and the San Andreas is trending N. NW. It's also the reason the Yellowstone hotspot is moving eastward. The hotspot is stationary. The North American plate is moving westward across it.

What's wrong with that regardless of the total video length? It tells people what they will be seeing. If they're interested, they continue. If not, they continue surfing elsewhere. The video is made for the KZbin audience and it follows a proven format that we use on other videos to provide information on a trip that someone may take.

Since you live in Pasadena, you ought to visit Cal Tech and ask them the same questions to learn what their answers are. I base information for our videos from the most generally accepted theory. Yes, generally accepted theory says the Earth is about 4.5 billion years old, but the fault has been in existence for roughly 20 million years. A big difference.
