She should have had so many more of these moments. The reverence, respect and wonderment each of those commentators expressed at the wunderkind that was Monica Seles in her prime was palpable. May she never be forgotten as one of the GOATs. She changed the game! Also, Chrissy Evert was such a supportive Champion. Hearing her tell Monica, "You're the best!" @ 1:13:57 after that match was so sweet. Evert was also a cheerleader for Serena when she was about to overtake her and Martina with 18 Grand Slams. That takes a special generosity of spirit and class act of one true GOAT to another.

The post match interview says it all. She was a wonderful competitor, but also very aware of the legends she was competing against.

at 47:00, Evert said she'd still put her money on Navratilova over Seles at Wimbledon. Well we all know now that Monica and Martina did meet at Wimbledon that year, which Monica won. I wonder if Chris remembered this public statement after Seles defeated Navratilova at Wimbledon just 4 months later.

Apart from the controversy over the grunting and Martina's complaint, I think that Wimbledon semi final took a lot out of Monica emotionally. I think deep down she didn't really think she was going to win that match against the queen of grass - her look of relief and almost shock when she won said a lot. I think in many ways it left her very emotionally flat for the final.

Just incredible that Betsy is talking about how few POINTS and GAMES Monica was losing at this point in her career. She lost 8 games in 4 matches leading up to the final. Hard to imagine that Monica would NOT have been as or more dominant in 93-95, especially as she was developing her serve into a weapon. btw, fuck this crowd.

The sad thing is well never know. On the other hand, there were some factors which may have counted against Monica. Firstly, she never enjoyed the very best health. In early 1993 from February to May she was forced to take three months off the tour because of a virus - Hamburg was her first tournament back. If she had kept playing, it's possible that the injuries that marred her comeback and then forced her out of the game may have started earlier. Secondly, there were a couple of signs that the stress was catching up with her at times. We've seen the same with other players who have had such a dominant run - they then have something of a slump because the stress and strain leaves them mentally and physically exhausted. Monica had a bit of a down patch in 1992 when she went for three months without winning a tournament from June to September - including some very lopsided losses to Graf, Navratilova and then her first loss to ASV in Canada. At times during that period she looked out of sorts and very tired. That meant that in the year leading up to the stabbing, because of the three month lay off in early 1993 due to the virus and the bad patch in 1992, she had gone for six of those twelve months without winning a tournament. It was one of the reasons why Graf was able to overtake her in the rankings at the French Open just a couple of weeks after the stabbing - they had been incredibly close in the rankings. Also worth remembering that questions were being asked about Monica's weight as early as 1991 - she admitted even back then that she was comfort eating and that she was "addicted to butter". I think that any person who is thrown into the grossly unhealthy world of professional tennis as young as Monica was is going to have serious issues with trauma. My guess is that it's one of the reasons she took so long to come back after the stabbing. Apart from the trauma of the attack, there was a huge amount of stress and misery dating back to her early teens that she hadn't been able to deal with.

Seles is so aggressive on returns she really changed women tennis for the better. Martinez needs time to win and she was robbed of time by Monica.

Monica never won Wimbledon, and only made it past the quarters once, so I wouldnt say she was that wrong. Yeah she beat an old Martina once at Wimbledon or Queens, so did Martinez, Harvey Wild, Oremans, Novotna, and 15 year old Capriati.

Ralph: Monica won eight of the first nine Grand Slams tournaments she entered, all by the time she was 19 years old, which is the record unmatched in the history of tennis, male or female. Only stabbing by a Graf fan lunatic could stop Monica, and it did:(
@ralphbourgeois58756 жыл бұрын
So many incorrect facts. Monica did NOT win 8 of 9 slams entered at any point in her career (a lie I see repeated by Seles fans, I guess if you repeat a lie often enough it is accepted as fact). It was 7 of 8 entered at one point (91-early 93). And while that is still amazing, it must be noted that is only with skipping an event (Wimbledon 91) she had no shot of winning, so even that is kind of silly to say in a way, but I guess factually correct thanks to her skipping out on an inevitable Wimbledon loss. Secondly eight of the first nine Grand Slams tournaments entered is an even bigger lie. Seles did not win any of the first 4 slam tournaments she entered, and lost 6 of her first 7 played . Which is understandable since she was only 15/16 for those ,but still shows you are spreading lies to try and build Seles up further. Lastly that record as a teenager is not unmatched in tennis history as you falsely claim. The best record ever for a teenager by far is Maureen Connolly who won all 9 slams she played aged 16-19, including numerous Wimbledons (vs Seles who won 0 Wimbledons), and including the Calendar Grand Slam in 1953. Next time make sure you speak facts and truths rather than spouting off nonsense.
@SaleSarajlija6 жыл бұрын
Wow, man. You must be filled with negativity when you get triggered by one slam (7 instead of 8) number missed to describe is s a "lie", as if 7 out of eight entered is any less impressive and unmatched in the history. Connolly played before way before the Open era so the competitive and global aspects of the game at the time was incomparable to the 90's, when Monica ruled. I feel sorry for you, man, when you react with such negativity and even hatred when someone points to unmatched teenage success of a tennis player. You have a problem, way beyond tennis debate.
