It’s so much fun to watch Martina. She behaves like a human - of this world only when score is close . It’s then that she shows she has feelings that shadow her incredible tennis skill. When she’s crushing a player she can be infallible . When score is close toward Ed of big matches Martina isvunerable . In 1981 open final Martina lost 1-6,7-6,7-6 herecshe deserved to win a match with same score until the third set.bit balances it out.Martina lost the Shriver in 78 open 7-6,7-6. Lost to Austin 8n 79 7-5,7-5. Lost to Mandlikova 7-5,6-4. In 1980 open. Lost to Shriver in 82 open 1-6, 7-6,6-2. Lost to graf 89 open after winning first set and up a break in second . Whenever Martina loses it’s always close.

Did any tennis player ever seem to be as miserable as Graf? She looks like she hates playing tennis in every match i see of hers. And this name change upon retiring? Is that not illuminating? Never, ever one ounce of sportsmanship at the net. Gloomy Gus and a bad sport.

The lovely Gabriela Sabatini is the player with the most wins with 11 vs the 22x Grand Slam winner 🏆 Steffi Graf. When Sabatini was inducted to the Tennis Hall of Fame, she chose Steffi to do the introduction as she stated in her acceptance speech... their matches made her better competitor.

...what a match...! i remember how close it was... if stefffi would had won, she most probably would have been an us open champion with 16. it was a kind of impressive promis of a future soon to come. i was following steffis career since i saw her age 12 (same age as me) playing in our tennis club. it was a match of the womens national german tennis league. her team mates and opponents were 18 +. and already weeks people were whispering: "das wunderkind kommt" (the wonderchild will play). and that she was: thin like a stic , a head smaller as her opponents - but a bundle of determination and explosibe energy and power, she deafeted one of the best german players in 3 sets by her unbelievable will power. and since that i also spoke about that" wunderkind" . ... a year later age 13 there was an interwiew with her in popular german sport magazine. the title: i ll become number 1 and i will dethrone martina navratilova. i thougth: very big words for a 13 years old girl. but the upcoming years showed it crysle clear:: slowly but steady and unstopable steffi was improving, became physically stronger, better and better. with the precision of a swiss watch, she climbed the wta-rankings. and she wasnt too much pushed. her father limited her tournaments - different to gabriela sabatini. different to boris becker who shot from nowhere to the top, she improved steadily and silently. international coaches from the wta-scene said: there is no one in her generation coming just close to her. when steffi became 15, martina navratilova said in an interview: if she is not stopped by injuries, steffi will be my natural successor. no question. she was not only impressed by steffis new concept of playng: dominating with an agressive baseline game. she also pointed out that graf would have the mentality of a real champion: that she would much rather loose a game as to win it by gifts of wrong line desicions. she also said: others dont wanna loose. she wants to win. tzhats the difference. ist seemed to be certain as the spring folls the winter that she will rise to the top. i m glad that i had the chance to see those both play: one eternal legend, the ruling queen who had redifined womens tennis and dominated with athleticism, aggressive serve and volley and her almos unbreakable determination..... and the upcoming young princess who dominated with agressive baseline tennis, her unbelievable foot speed and her will power. steffi emerged and improved impressively along that challenge, narrowing the gap more and more - espcially on martinas empire: the gras court in wimbledon which were much faster that time. the wimbledon final 1988 is still one of the best matches ever played.. its tennis from another universe. steffi considers it as her best performance ever. they had spectacular battles.the respected each other deep. they were real champions and they are legends. who willl be rembered ever... i reall miss them and i miss these golden times of tennis.

@tobiasisback4605 She was like an old-school ballet dancer 150 years ago, only like a slightly modernized Suzanne Lenglen. However, what made Steffi so fascinating is her unique fusion of female grace and elegance with modern dynamics and power. That's why Steffi will stand the test of time and Goolagong will not. Meaning in 100 years from now people will still watch Steffi videos. And not Goolagong's.

I am very irritated by the weird comments here. So many negativity, so much nonsense. It is just a match between two very talented, yet different players. Steffi wasn't playing her best that day and Martina was playing smart and consistent. It is just that, people. ;)

It's really sad isn't it. There are so many weirdos out there who massively over identify with their favourite player. Except it seems to be the image they have in their head of the player, and not what they were like in reality.

The spring of 1988 had some ups and downs for Steffi Graf. Perhaps dealing with the pressure of becoming #1, perhaps playing a bit too much, she had her first loss to Gabi at Boca Raton and then her second one in a row here. She had also been match point down to Pam Shriver at Boca Raton. During the Lipton tournament, she was actually at risk of losing her #1 status. Martina Navratilova had been on a great winning streak after the Australian Open and she won 5 tournaments in a row (including beating Gabi in the final here), closing the gap with Steffi. After this, Steffi pulled away. She only had one more defeat all year (To Shriver in November) whereas Martina Navratilova's form fizzled out over the summer. Gabi's wins over Steffi in Florida became something of a regular occurrence.

I loved Graf in early ages when she was breaking through. Forhand was something it looks it can only get bigger and better. But her backhand returns that she played sometimes like volleys from base lines were so brave and learned to perfection already....the way she used Martina's power and the pace of her serve against her.

No matter what you say, for a 15 yr old to beat Graf, with all the experience she had, was a huge thing, there`s no excuse for Stefi. No wonder Hingis became no1 later on. If she did drugs was her own problem, you cant bring her down with that, such a low move of you.

Steffi comes from city 10 KM besides my village and when she became famous in 1985 it must have been a friend and me went with our bikes to her city. In that times Stars used to give signed cards and posters to their Fans and when we arrived we found a lot of kids already their but Steffi was very respectful to all these kids and very friendly as well. We went home with our bikes and i remember that Steffis signed Poster hang over my bed for years. I am still impressed from these trip we did with our bike and how natural here behaviour was.
