This helped narrow down the intermittent cranking problem. It was hard to reproduce, but shifting from Park to Neutral always guaranteed a crank. Since we tracked down this video late on Sunday night, it will be Monday morning before we purchase the new switch. I also noticed an intermittent problem with the Reverse lights which are controlled from the same Neutral Safety Switch. An important clue, but hard to notice unless you're reversing in the dark.

Well done. With your help we changed the part in 30 minutes. Truck no longer started in Neutral, then would not start in Park. Replaced the original 1992 NSS on E4OD transmission. With both intermittent and unable start in Neutral we also had to replace the starter solenoid on fender next to the battery. Runs like new. Simply slid the new switch in the posiiton out of the box, everything lined up. Started first try. Thank you.

Nice video. basically the exact conditions when I would change it and exactly how I swap it. If it is intermittent it is likely the contacts in the switch. If you have to move the shifter up every time it likely needs to be adjusted.

Thanks for the video. Quality was excellent! I replaced my Neutral Safety Switch this past weekend and the random shifting into OD, N and then back to D has stopped finally! I was told to have my transmission rebuilt, but it turned out to be this sensor for $50 and now it drives fine. Apparently this neutral safety switch controls other sensors on the transmission too.

This was perfect for me. This looks exactly like my NSS on my 1996 Ranger 4.0 4X4. I will first do the adjustment, then get a new switch if necessary.

If you notice. They're a line molded into the sensor just above the tab that fits onto the shifter rod coming out of the transmission. It is usually marked "neutral". Align the mark on the sensor with the indent on the shifter. Placing the shift lever in neutral before changing the sensor makes alignment easy.

I have a 1996 Ford Ranger. The transmission wouldn't shift into 3rd gear. It worked fine on the column. Would shift like suppose to. The range sensor ( neutral safety switch ) was the problem. R&R'd it and shifts great now. Seems to shift smoother throughout.

Great video. I would like to bypass the switch with a paper clip and test the wire connections to make sure the backup lights come on on bypass. There are many wires on the connector. How do I tell which wire to connect the paper clip to to test?

I have a 1993 Ford F-150 xlt automatic and when I had a bad neutral safety switch it wouldn’t start all the time which is the common problem but also too The transmission wouldn’t shift into second gear every at all. Now with a new neutral safety switch it shifts smoothly.

My 1994 cab on a 1992 F-150 frame with an E4OD transmission has no backup lights. I saw one video that talks about replacing a switch on the side of the transmission. I saw in a Ford forum that said the E4OD transmissions don't have that backup light switch on the transmission. They control the backup lights with the Neutral Safety Switch (MLPS MLP Sensor). Can you enlighten me any further? It's Dec. 1st and pretty damn cold here in NY and I'm not too eager to crawl under my truck to find out what I've got until Springtime comes around. I'm getting soft in my old age (78), I guess.

I have a 1997 that is stuck in low four wheel drive, there isn't a vacuum issue. It seems that the switch on the dash is not working (the one that moves it from 2 wheel high to 4 wheel drive) is not working. Where is the module or how would I check it to see if it is getting power.

Could this happen for one tank only? First my front tank would crank but no start. Ran on rear tank for a few months figured it was fuel pump. Rear stopped, i banged on the tank, started 3 more times and then completely died both tanks crank but no start. Replaced rear tank and all of a sudden the front tank will start and run

Great video thank you. I have a problem tho. Every NS switch I’ve bought comes with an ever so slightly different plug! It comes ‘standard’ I’m told with this new plug I have to splice on, removing the old plug off my wiring harness. I can’t fine a neutral SS where it’s just plug & play. My friend who’s very experienced at OReillys says it’s b/c the plug 🔌 itself often also goes bad??! Wondering your thots and/or where to order the NSS you used in video. That is mine exact. 94 Ford E150 V8.

So once you get the large nut off and the shift lever removed, you should be able to just pull the MLPS/neutral safety switch off? I could not get mine to come off. It is flimsy cheap plastic also and I was worried I would break it, I want to test it to see if it is good, but I cannot test it on the truck with my multimeter. not sure why it is stuck, there is a lot of dirt and grime down there though so maybe that is why it is stuck, I will try again tomorrow. Thank you for this video though telling me it should just come off. I will be a little more persuasive toward it, but want to be careful still.

Had the same question... I went and changed my out thinking it was going to a 30 minute job, followed the video exactly and now I'm having issues starting my truck... have a 94 ford f150 xlt 2wd 4.9l, nothing special, it gets me from A to B... anyways, now down the line with a new battery, starter motor, solenoid, ignition switch later... still no crank or turnover, have to bypass the solenoid to start it, now... my new battery is reading low voltage... so idk, I am stumped and looked and asked around forums but all of them give the same answer... idk, I'm a visual leaner and can't understand when instructions are in writing cuz I always fudge up somewhere lol...
