Where I'm from we've had these from new. Top tip to ensure it can run up hills all day and through hot humid summers while driving through soft sand etc is to: 1) obviously ensure the water pump and thermostat are good and to use good quality Toyota red coolant. 2) the viscous fan hub is working, if not top up the silicone oil in it 3) an intercooler and larger exhaust will dramatically reduce the exhaust gas temperature and make it last forever.

Might want to do the temp gauge mod, should be essentially the same for all Toyota's with the same type of gauge cluster, exchange one resistor for a bigger one and the diode for a smaller resistor.

I had a 1991 Toyota Previa van, the engine was under the seats and I never smelled fumes or felt the heat from the engine.
