We had a previa. The ‘eggvan’ we called it. Great road trip machine and the engine location was great for winter heat and driving!!!!

That's the "Princess" sunroof option on that van. Buddy had a cream white 1961ish Rolls Royce Silver Cloud years ago as a "for hire" car, mainly for weddings. It had a HUGE aftermarket sunroof installed on it, one of those vinyl cloth type sunroofs. Joke was the Princess could stand up in the back seat and wave to the crowd thru the sunroof during a parade.

The reason why Toyota decided to make a narrower version of the Estima was so that it would fit into a lower tax bracket. Because cars in Japan are taxed based on size owners of the Emina and the related Lucida would pay less tax than if they had a regular Estima.
@PacificCoastAuto5 жыл бұрын
Good idea but not correct. The classes of passenger vehicles is only based on size for the kei cars (660cc with length, width, and height limits). Passenger cars are otherwise sorted via engine size only. Taxes are based on engine size and weight. I suppose a thinner version would weight less and therefore be less costly for taxes... but at the current tax rates, that would be about $10 per year so probably not the reason. I suspect it's done as a way to fill holes in the market by selling a slightly down-market version.
@SakurauchiLily5 жыл бұрын
I just checked Wikipedia and apparently, the engine displacement tax used to be accompanied by a similar tax on dimensions. That dimension tax seems to no longer be in use, but it seems that this was the case during the 1990's, when the first generation Estima was in production. Similarly to this, 2.0-litre A70 Supras were fitted with narrower fenders than their larger engined counterparts so that they would not only fit into a lower tax bracket for engine size, but also regarding dimensions. Though since the dimension tax is no longer in use, you were right about the present day taxing system.
