Still one of the greatest football games I've ever seen, but you're right. Losing to BC and having Florida State win the National Championship anyways takes some of the luster off of this.

@@TheSBleeder oh I agree. To me this WAS the National Championship in 1993. Both teams played like it which meant they were both on empty the next week. Unfortunately Notre Dame played a 17th ranked team and FSU played horrible NC State. Not taking anything away from Boston College but if that game falls any other week on 1993 NOTRE DAME schedule instead of the week it fell on then ND beats them by at least 2 TDs.

Jay Zee And That is what costed them the national title. The losses looked better. FSU lost on the road to the number two team in the country. Notredame was number one and loss to number 17 at home. That’s the difference. But they should have met for the title in a bowl game.

What a great game this was, Notre Dame had it all set up for them after this win until losing the following week to Boston College on a last second field goal, The same Boston College team that lost to Northwestern earlier in the season, That's what hurt the Irish.

Hangover loss. ND poured everything into this game against FSU that they had nothing left for the next week. Heck a High School team may have had a shot against ND the next week because they had nothing left. If they played Boston College any other week they pound them.

So, Notre Dame and Florida St. each finish the season with only 1 loss. Notre Dame won the head-to-head matchup. Yet, Florida St. gets to play in the national championship? Same thing happened in 2000. Miami and Florida St. each finish with 1 loss. Miami won the head-to-head matchup. Again, Florida St. gets to play in the national championship game. College football doesn't make sense.

shmikes G Not really it depends on the losses and how good they looked. Remember both years FSU lost to the number one team by at least a touchdown or three points. Those losses made them look better. ND lost to 17th ranked Boston College the next week at home. Miami lost to Pac 10 Washington in the second week of the schedule by at least ten while FSU once again lost by a field goal. Hmm which losses looked better? Not really hard to understand.

In 1989 nd and Miami both go 12-1 they give title to Miami. The reason was because Miami won head to head. 4 years later the same scenario. The writers felt sorry for Bowden and gave him a title.

no it was correct. For one, this wasnt an ass whooping. Still came down to the end. One head to head isnt the final deciding factor. Fsu that year was dominant and had wins over top 5 gators on road by double digits, miami ranked 3 by double digits, everyone else like 54-0. One 7 pt road loss at number 2 shouldnt bump them out.
