Match number two in a small casual tournament played a few months ago. Here we see two classic decks - the white/black DeadGuy Ale and Robots - square off. While both these decks are capable of winning a tournament, today, only one can move on to the finals.

This is so freaking old-school cool, thanks for sharing! Ignore the idiot saying too much talking, your commentary was great & I appreciate the insight into this venerable format I and many other MTG fans are not that familiar with.

You can't avoid the damage from Juzaam by destroying it with The Abyss. The Abyss and Juzaam triggers go on the stack at the beginning of the upkeep, so even though the source of damage is gone, the damage itself is not. Think of Disenchanting a Rod of Ruin: It doesn't matter if you Disenchant before or after the player activates the Rod. This does work slightly differently than upkeep costs that require you to sacrifice the permanent. For instance, you could choose to chuck Junuun Efreet into The Abyss without also choosing to pay his BB upkeep cost. However, the only reason that works is because you (the active player) would put the "pay or sacrificed" cost on the stack first, and the other player must put The Abyss trigger on top of it. (They control the trigger because it's their card, you choose the target because that's what the card instructs.) By the time you resolve The Abyss trigger, the permanent is already destroyed so you don't need to also pay for it. There are other creatures that do bad things to you if you don't feed them, and similarly their bad effects can't be avoided by killing them with The Abyss. Lord of the Pit will still eat you from beyond the grave if you can't sacrifice someone else, so you can't target the creature you want to feed to the Lord (or the Lord itself) and avoid the damage. Ditto with the demon from Antiquities and sacrificing an artifact (I know you can't destroy an artifact with the Abyss, but just as a parallel).

What I'm not sure about is whether this would have changed with the introduction of the stack, because my impression is that all the upkeep fast effects like The Abyss and Juzaam's ping would go into a batch. But no one really had a concept of resolving upkeep costs as part of a batch back then. It's just something you did "during" your upkeep. (All

Both of these cards have had their card texts updated to say “beginning of Upkeep” so because they both go up at the same time, both effects must go off, no matter stack or batch. Neither is a choice. With paying Junan Efreet cost, it’s a choice since it’s an “or” text.

That’s why I play city in a bottle main deck to get with transmute artifact. It’s easier to deal with juzam that way,

I've never seen old school magic, but it looks really funny. Like they are playing with some of these unbelievably powerful cards and insane mana/answers to the broken mana, but at the same time their threats are underworld dreams and a 4 mana 5/5 with a downside. They use all these crazy powerful broken cards to play threats that you would see at a limited table.

Why not city in a bottle for a transmute target in the main deck? It shuts off a lot of decks.

That is a great idea - I think at the time this was filmed, I simply didn't have City in a Bottle. Sometimes that is a factor ha.

12:45 hahahaha. First time in my life I see the Chaos Orb played. This is too funny. And the guy seems to be a pro at using it. Didn't know it was legal to play. Why is he playing a black board? In case he has to rip it in pieces a white board would be more feasible, no?

How much does your deck cost? Yes.

It depends when you bought the cards, sadly. Juzam Djinn is over $1,000 each as of today, but many in the community bought Juzam years ago when it was cheaper. For those interested in Old School, I highly recommend finding groups that play with proxies (there are plenty!) so you can still enjoy all of the amazing cards printed in this time period without buying them. Then you can collect what you want over time.

Ok, so I'm kinda old school, started in revised. I watched this stream with great interest, but man... I can't get into any format where Chaos Orb is legal. Yes, I understand this is old school, but that trash should never have been printed... let alone allowed in any format.
