isnt this card genius to find out what and how an opponent is playing? like a test round that cost you half your life,it goes the other way too but a more experienced player would profit,or not? not counting the time aspect

Good Shahrazad play, as the subgame has a much better chance at working out in his favor given the really, really fast Dark Ritual -> Underworld Dreams -> Howling Mine opening of his opponent, all three of which are no longer available for the subgame.

This is why the deck is horrible to play against game 3 he had no business winning but they do it way too often with 1 or 2 hp its so bad for the format that the deck is dominating so much, ban tome and restrict abyss to 1 19:33

the deck actually lost though... Not sure why Atog player scooped when he had a blocker and 4 life and could swing for lethal next turn.

Regarding library of Alexandria, it’s clearly the most busted card in all of old school. I really don’t understand formats with one strip because it leaves too many chances for library to be left unchecked and warp games. Their justification is that strip warps games on its own, but leaving library unchecked is way more warping of a game state than using multiple strip mine. It also leaves Mithras factory unchecked for a lot of games and that card on its own can totally dominate games turn after turn, especially when it pumps. If you’re Restricting stip mine, ban library and restrict factory as well. Then it’s an actual balance

I tend to agree - I would restrict strip mine and ban Library. I understand people don't like the four Factories, but there are multiples ways to deal with them (swords/disenchant/blot), whereas Library less so.

@@mtgnewengland1888 Yes but in a format without four strip mine, factory can literally win games by itself, especially when pumping. Two factories can hold off big creatures like Juzam all day long. Just my opinion. 😊

Great games and content. I always wonder the best way to offer advice on making the games easier to watch when webcasting. An off center camera with a lot of the playmat going unused and the most frequently used part being obscured by a deck box. 🤷🏻♂️ Not to mention the vertical split. Between lands and creatures is different take 🧐

You can activate regenerate any time you have priority. It creates a regenerate shield that activates next time creature is destroyed. You can wait to active until it is targeted by something like bolt but if you wait until it’s taken lethal damage or has been destroyed and is headed to graveyard it is too late.

Im super confused about game 1 unless there is something off screen, opp never had access to 2 black mana to cast Sengirs and tapped 0 black for the 2nd sengir as he used the badlands to cast a bolt.

Yes - that was an illegal cast. Could have just been a mistake, but I (playing Goblins) also missed it so unfortunately it stood. Have to pay better attention on webcam!

All formats in old school should allow proxies. It’s not a secret club, for rich elite, and shouldn’t be presented as such. Relic barrier is great as a four of in prison.

You can't sacrifice Nicol Bolas to Lord of the Pit and keep the other Nicol Bolas in play, because the Legend Rule is a state-based action which is checked as a player is about to get priority. Lord of the Pit has a triggered ability, and the sacrifice has to be made during the resolution of that ability. By the time the active player has priority to handle Lord of the Pit's trigger, the second Bolas is already in the graveyard. Back in the day this might have worked (when you could sacrifice lands to Zuran Orb during Balance's resolution, for example), but not with modern rules. Sorry!

Yes! The rules text says: "Maze of Ith can target an untapped attacking creature. It will still prevent the combat damage it would deal and be dealt."

Why not city in a bottle for a transmute target in the main deck? It shuts off a lot of decks.

That is a great idea - I think at the time this was filmed, I simply didn't have City in a Bottle. Sometimes that is a factor ha.

In game 3 - when the spector attacks why does he not use his swords. he has an untapped fellwar stone and dead guy ale has a scrupland in play?

My only guess he is forgot the fellwar stone could tap for white here. One downside to playing on webcam is that it is easier to lose sight of your opponent's board state. I think it was just a mistake - a costly one!

It’s interesting since in 94, no one who had all of the cards played silly decks like this. Players played silly decks but those players usually sold off their power and Chaos Orbs.

You are correct! Playing 93/94 old school in 2022 is different, because people have all the of cards or can easily buy cards online.

@@mtgnewengland1888 Yes but in LA where I played, everyone serious had or could easily get all of the cards. But we played through times where a particular card was not yet restricted. So I ran a deck with 4x Balance. I saw a deck with 4x Mishra's Workshop. I saw when Fork was not restricted...I remember when Berserk was unrestricted, then restricted again...oops. I remember the deck with 4x Mind Twist or 4x Underworld Dreams, etc. People would run 1x Channel and Fireball/Disintegrate before Channel was banned. That makes a huge impact on the difference between the current "fair" 94 vs. the real 94.

I try to label my videos casual play when I know the players are not playing in a competitive event or with the best strategy. This video is just some guys having fun with these awesome old cards! But I also try and have competitive videos on the channel as well.

Yeah old school is filled with misplays and unchecked violations of the rules. It’s annoying sometimes. Usually one of the players is good enough to notice and make a correction during the game. Casual shouldn’t mean “not caring” about the rules.

Do these games use modern MTG game rules or older rules, e.g. using the batch instead of the stack? Does damage go on the stack in these games?

It's the modern rules, so it's the stack. The US variations of Old School does retain Mana Burn, but Swedish OS does not.
