Lucky Forever earned his first of three stakes victories when he won the 1993 Bay Meadows Budweiser Breeders' Cup Handicap by 1 1/2 lengths under jockey Antonio Castanon for trainer Gary Lewis. The gelded son of Lucky North later won the 1995 Rich Cream Handicap at Hollywood Park and before adding a second Bay Meadows Budweiser Breeders' Cup Handicap victory later that year. He retired with a record of 24-7-4-3 and earnings of $457,800.
The runner-up in the 1993 Bay Meadows Budweiser Breeders' Cup Handicap was Cardmania, who began his career in France and was a Group 3 winner in Italy before coming to the United States. The stretch runner peaked shortly after the Bay Meadows Budweiser Breeders' Cup Handicap, winning the G3 Ancient Title Breeders' Cup Handicap and the G1 Breeders' Cup Sprint in his next two starts. He was named champion sprinter for 1993. A gelding by Cox's Ridge, the well-traveled Cardmania made 76 starts in six different countries. He was 16-12-20 and had more than $1.5 in earnings at the time of his retirement.
Letthebighossroll, a California-bred who earned just over $1 million, beat one horse to finish eighth in the 1993 Bay Meadows Budweiser Breeders' Cup Handicap.
Editorial note: I hate the name of this race. It's too long and too similar to the Bay Meadows Handicap. The race eventually was renamed the Bay Meadows (Breeders' Cup) Sprint, a much more straightforward name.
