Can you imagine what it must feel like to be on him, have the patience and confidence in your horse to hold him back until the very end and then turn him loose and feel him hit another gear and walk down the entire field from 30 lengths back? Gives me goosebumps just trying to imagine it.

As horses age they lose initial speed gaining stamina, hence the ability to keep steady pace for a lot longer than younger horses that degrade in pace more and more as distance increases.. Calidoscopio is 10y old there so he's got a lot more potential in keeping a flat pace in great distance than Percussion who i figure is no more than 5y old there. (not that this subtracts from Calidoskopio's value - it takes an iron horse to last 7-8y of racing).
@awuma6 жыл бұрын
In National Hunt racing, 10 is not that old. In January 2018, a 13 year old with a 16 year old jockey won the Welsh Grand National. The other 13 year old in the race was a good second! The race was 3 miles 5 1/2 furlongs... A charm of jump racing is that the horses, mostly geldings, have very long careers, attracting a faithful fan following. The great Red Rum raced from the age of two (on the flat), and later won three Grand Nationals (about 4.5 miles) and was second in two, retiring at 13 and living a celebrity life to the age of 30. He never fell in 100 races, and is credited with saving the Grand National. Calidoscopio is very unusual in that he had a very long track career as an entire, which may not have helped him at stud later.
