1993 California Highway Patrol SSP/SMPV Mustang

This is retired and former unit #5310 from the Claifornia Highway Patrol which was originally assigned to the Mojave CHP office. This paricular Mustang was commerical a enforcement unit and worked freeway detail as an all white Specially Marked Patrol Vehicle "SMPV" which differed from all the traditional black and white vehicles in California Highway Patrol fleet. Restoration on 5313 was completed in 2017, by Eric Gaona from Bakersfield Ca. Special Thanks to retired CHP Officer B. Jobe for his in put with 5310's restoration and to Officer Jobes service with the CHP while he patrolled the Southern California freeways in this CHP Mustang. BEAUTIFUL. I miss my '87 CHP Mustang that got rear ended and totaled on the I-10 at Rosemead in '92. It cost $4500 from Torrance CHP vehicle sales in a sealed bid and had been painted white (7/10 quality with overspray here and there.) It had 100,000 miles on it, was 5.0, 5 speed manual, with radio delete and a few holes drilled into the front valance. When I drove it away at age 17 after owning an '86 Toyota P/U with a 4 cylinder automatic, I floored it in 1st and smoked 'em right in front of the CHP building. Then I let off as I fell in love with a still-working posi rear end (I wore out the posi getting sideways and doing donuts in the next year!!!) Those cars are perfect. Even the weird little trunk release button in the locking glovebox... The only Ford I'd ever drive.

Those police Mustangs are hard to find. They didn't last long in the force. But they are faster than the Crown Victoria of the same era. This one is well restored!

Thecarkid 11 RI, I’m not sure if it’s an actual law but the newest old emergency vehicles I’ve seen that are privately owned are over 25 years old so I just assume it is. And they don’t have to put “not in service” on the vehicle

My father drove these back in the 1980s In southern california for the highway patrol and said that most officers avoided this car because it was manual and being a police officer in a highly densed area such as in downtown los angeles it required you to multitask with all of the radio , lights etc and the manual transmission only added to the cluster and made it very unattractive as a patrol car , It’s a beautiful car but my father said it wasn’t missed when it was phased out .

Did the Mustang have the arrow bar in the window while in service as well as the light behind the rearview mirror? I can only remember the 3 can lights in the back window. Great looking car!

Mark Sellinger I remember them as you do. I don't recall ever seeing the windshield mounted steady-burn, I just remember the spotlights and wigwags to the front and three round lights on the rear deck (red, blue, & amber).

Just like Florida highway patrol police car interceptors you know the South it is I had a 1980 mustang just like these body styles I left it at a Mobil gas station rte 68 after doing acid at West Virginia University purple Jesus took too much out put too much oil in it Mobil oil in it and smoke came out the tailpipe that was back in 97 it had the manual transmission for speed that you have to push far to the left while pushing down then up to put it in reverse
