Foreign invasion changed the Australian icon from this horse since. nowadays people can't find locally bred stayers anymore so Australia everything is American.

As a Kiwi I was on Te Akau Nick and at the 300, I thought the old fulla was gonna hold on. It took a champion horse to mow him down. RIP Te Akau Nick

I worked as a Vineyard Hand in the Hunter Valley and was 5mnths pregnant and knew without a doubt that he would be the 1.B4 I managed to get into town to place my bet I electrocuted myself and thankfully the old fuses on the farm house blew before I fried myself to death.Hours later at the hospital getting a CT scan to check that the baby was ok I’m informed by The radiographer that I’m pregnant with Twins. No amount of prize money for 1st place could or would ever trump such a blessing. What’s even funnier is that I can pick the 1st 4 to cross the line just by checking them out b4 the race but if I place a bet on them then I’m the loser every time. Thank you Vintage Crop for being part of my Life Story.May you fly high across the seas of never ending green.RIP

Vintage Crop even also made some appearances in jump races, including the 1993 English Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham, before focusing on flat racing, in which he had some major achievements, including this Melbourne Cup win which made him the first winner as a foreigner (excluding those from New Zealand).

First northern hemisphere horse to win? He was a great horse, I think from memory he may have even followed up with a placing a couple of years later in the Melbourne Cup?

Crop wasn't a bad horse for a broken down jumper lol. That was what one of the Ozzy racing critics referred to Crop as in the leadup lol

My favourite Melbourne Cup win. None of the Australian trainers rated him a chance - they had very narrow ideas about what constituted a suitable preparation for the 32,000 metre handicap. It was inconceivable to them that a horse who had been spelled, (and whose most recent outing was over the hurdles) would be ill prepared to stay the distance and defeat all comers in the home strait. I lived near Lambourne for a time, and had seen first hand, how the Brits trained their stayers. I knew the Irish had a similar approach and had watched several of Dermot Weld's runners on UK television. My only regret is that I was driving at the time and didn't get a chance to bet on him.

Fun fact: The 1993 Melbourne Cup still holds the record for the largest trifecta payout ever, with a AUD$61,867.90! Back then, there were no First 4 or Quaddie bets, so the trifecta was the big ticket for bettors.

There was a lady who had a dream that the trfecta numbers would be 5-6-10 so she took it in this race, the trifeta paid over $60,000 ..... Lucky Lady

Depressing memories. This was the biggest trifecta in Melbourne Cup history at $62500. When I reviewed the form guide and the odds I picked the winning trifecta but my dad talked me out of it saying it was a million to one shot and would never happen. So I changed it to Vintage Crop and other horses and watched the race in horror.
