When Kim and Lu reigned at the same time (February-September 1994), was that the only time the reigning Miss America and Miss USA were from the same state? If not, please let me know.

Interesting that JJ Foxworth, Miss Abbeville, who had competed several times, was a double preliminary winner, but didn’t place anywhere in the top 5. A great winner of course, the first black woman to win Miss South Carolina and the state’s second Miss America.

There are double preliminary winners at Miss America who don't make the finals. Scoring consistently high (enough) in all categories is more likely to ensure a win than uneven scoring, especially if the competition is stiff. As a matter of fact, Kim Aiken did not win any prelim awards at Miss America and she went on to win. You can see here why she won at nationals. I am so glad she changed her talent song to "Summertime." After that rendition, I knew she was going to win Miss America. A historical and well deserved win in so many ways. Cheers!
