Graig Nettles is one of the most underrated Yankees. I still remember back when we used to play ball after school and when anyone made an incredible play, someone would scream out Nettles!

This was a very special event, usually it’s just old Yankees players, but to have a ton of guys from the Yankees 1978 opponents also participating is really phenomenal. Also very cool to see the consummate pro Frank Messer back at Yankee Stadium, he was as sharp as ever in this ceremony!

Frank kept doing OTD until he simply couldn't do it anymore. It used to drive me crazy that the MSG announcers always talked OVER the introductions like that. Don't know why they thought that was a good idea.

@@PeteRFNY yeah it makes no sense why they did that. It seems the Yankees didn’t love it, never heard them do that on YES.

@@PeteRFNY Sadly, Frank's reputation got trashed by a guy named Curt Smith, who presented himself as the supposed know-it-all authority on baseball broadcasting history when he wrote a book called "Voices of the Game" in 1987. He rudely dismissed the totality of Frank's work in one sentence when referring to him in passing and because he's on the HOF announcing committee, Frank sadly will never get his due credit until he's gone at bare minimum.

Messer was so much better than Kaye at broadcasting and doing these special events.

I'd almost forgotten that the Yankees used to be on MSG! I miss the Old-Timers Days when they would trot out the Scooter, the Mick (who only had a couple of years left), Whitey and Joe D. I think Yogi was still refusing to come back ever since George Steinbrenner fired him like 16 games into the season back in the '80's. Sadly, those greats are no longer with us. A lot of the '78 team is still with us, though.

Thanks - it was looking at YOUR channel that inspired me to start digitizing my old tapes! I was all set to start diving in and I messed up my shoulder so I haven't been able to start moving boxes around, but I will be doing that soon!

My Dad and I used to go every year from the mid-70s to the 80s. He'd tell me stores all about the greats as they were introduced and all the things he'd seen in person in the 40s and 50s. As a little kid I soaked that in like a sponge.

bro the game looks legit af. They could still played actual ball despite being retired.
@PeteRFNY

@robinlinh I hate that they no longer play an old-timer's game, they just introduce everyone. Like a lot of other things (like the incredibly ridiculous "ghost runner" nonsense), they started it using c-19 as an excuse, then conveniently never went back to it. They should just call it "alumni day" now.

If the wild card had existed in the 80s (especially) and early 90s, I wonder how many times the Yankees would have actually made the post-season. I should do the math on that one of these days...!

Finish 1st or go home!!!!!! Baseball today is a joke. It has become a watered down post season tournament. There would be no 1978 Yankees comeback in today's joke of a game

Good old Frank Messer! Billy Martin. Had the heart of a lion. Roy White and Willie Randolph. Jackson. The great Mel Allen. The Scooter! Mr. Ford. Mantle. DiMaggio. Todays old timers days suck. All mediocre players.
