1993 Range Rover Classic Transfer Case fluid change.

Date of filming November 2023. As far as I know, the transfer case fluid in this truck had not been serviced in many years. So it was time, and while I had the truck up on the ramps for the oil change, I figured I'd tackle this as well. This version of the Range Rover, a 1993 County Long Wheelbase with the 4.2 liter gas (petrol) engine (North American Spec) takes two quarts of Dexron according to the service manual. The original spec was for Dex 2, but that doesn't exist anymore, so Dex 3 or Dex 4 will do. I could only find various versions of Dex 4 at my local Autozone but I was able to find Dex 3 online. I wound up purchasing TransMax by Castrol. The entire service was relatively quick, say about 15-20 minutes without issues. I did need a breaker bar to release the drain plug (both plugs are identical and take a half inch square drive) as was the case with the front and rear diff drain plugs as well. Furthermore, there were chunks of balled up rubber inside the transfer case (you'll see in the video). I don't know what this is, but I'm guessing it's gasket material that's somehow worked its way into the case, although... who knows. There was no way I was going to open up the case on this day, but it's clear that some real service needs attending to down the road.
