RIP Don Shula. Met him in Ft. Lauderdale in the summer of 94 while entering a hotel when I was a kid. Asked me "how are you doing in school young man." I say fine but then here goes my pops "but he can be doing better!" Coach laughs and says "school is very important. Make sure you get good grades young man." As a life long jets fan from NY that was an amazing moment for me. Even as a kid you can tell he was a Mans Man.

Dolphins vs Giants was one of the league's rarest matchups. This was only the third meeting between them since the merger and the Giants first game in Miami. They were supposed to play each other in the first game at Joe Robbie Stadium in 1987 but it was canceled due to the players strike.

I miss Pat Summerall! Every game seemed like the Super Bowl. No one called a game like Pat. He just knew how to tell us what happened, but in a way that doesn't talk above his audience. Would love to hear him call todays game, with the great players we have in the game now.

Not only Summerall and Madden's first game ever in Miami and first Dolphins game, but also the only time they ever called a game coached by Don Shula.
@ryanstrnad84425 жыл бұрын
This MAY have been Summeral & Madden's first game at Joe Robbie stadium. They'd at least call two more there. '96 Cowboys at Dolphins (Jimmy Johnson's return). Then Super Bowl XXXIII both on Fox. This was on CBS.
@ryanstrnad84425 жыл бұрын
True. I think Madden and Summeral only called one game in Buffalo as well. And I don't think the duo ever called a regular season game in the Astrodome but they probably did do the annual preseason "Battle of Texas" game (Cowboys at Oilers) in that building once or twice.

Most of the good Dolphins home games against NFC teams got picked up for MNF or SNF.
@ryanstrnad84425 жыл бұрын
@@paulanderson6634I was thinking about that. I remember the Rams played an old Thursday Night game on ABC down there. There was a period there in the 80's (before ESPN) where ABC would televise like 5 more game in addition to their traditional Monday Night slate. Some early season Thursday fnighters (but not the opening week), maybe a Sunday Night game. Then they would always have that Friday night game to start the last weekend of the season. Going back, I know CBS did a Saturday game in the Orange Bowl with the late Frank Glieber wth Dick Vermiel calling it. There might still be a game on youtube floating around, Tampa Bay at Miami in '85 that went to a small part of the country (Tim Ryan & Dan Jiggets)

Summerall and Madden also called the Saints-Dolphins game in 1998 (Intro to that game is on my channel) :)
@ryanstrnad84425 жыл бұрын
@@WREYtubemy guess was probably a singleheader weekend where Madden didn't feel like riding in his bus for too far. Maybe they wanted to televise Marino one last time. I don't THINK Ditka was coaching the Saints yet.

@@nirvanajunkie19 The sweet spot, for me, is FOX in 1994. The score and the time were on the screen, clear enough to be read by anyone, but small enough to be unobtrusive and ignored.
