Yeah, for the kids out there that just don't know, Marino was truly epic. I'm a raider fan and have no love for Miami, but I have tremendous respect for Dan Marino. Not winning the SB is just a reminder that it's a TEAM game. He very clearly wasn't the reason the dolphins didn't win it all. Truly gifted and a great career.

He had a very strong arm, was insanely accurate, could throw with touch, could exploit the weaknesses of any defense (Including the 1985 Bears!) and despite being slow, he was rarely sacked because of that insanely quick release. - If I could choose any player in NFL history to start a team with, it would be Marino. Top 20 single season passing yards in NFL history all have been done since 2011 except for 2: Brees in 2008(or 09?) and Marino in 1984. The significance of 2011 is that is when multiple up,e rules were introduced to keep QBs healthy thus making it easier to pass for more yardage.

Any D-lineman from that era will tell you that one of the most immobile and slowest quarterbacks was also the most difficult to sack. His pocket presence was like a 6th sense and the release...that release is still unrivaled today.

Marino was the only quarterback that beat the vaunted 85 Chicago Bears defense. If they'd managed to give him a running game and a legit defense, there's no telling how many Superbowls he'd have won. In later years, the Bears faced him successfully by keeping him off the field with their running attack. Marino noted before each of those games, "the Bears have a great defense, I hope I can be ready for them." Dan was the quintessential, class act, and a sweet guy that even as a bears fan, you had to love. The Bears were rumored to have floated a blockbuster trade deal, which would've sent Neil Anderson, and a few other prominent starters to Miami for Marino. Had that trade happened, the legacy of the 80s Chicago Bears, would've been altogether different and they would've had another 5 Superbowls and Marino would've gotten his rings. What if......

Marino was the Mahomes of his day. A lot of similarities between the two. Marino was never the same after he blew his Achilles. They didn't repair them like they do, today. After the Achilles, he was a lot easier to contain. Before that, he was as elusive as he needed to be to make the play, much like Mahomes. Throughout his era, I think the top teams in the NFC were just too good in the trenches.

My favorite quarterback of all time is my favorite team of all time. I started watching the Dolphins when I was 11 years old. In 1988, I never looked back. It broke my heart in 2020 or 2021 when they changed the logo, I think it looks so stupid now I wish they just left well enough alone. Long Live number 13 I remember when you used to play football on Sunday mornings with all my buddies. I was always proud to wear my aqua blue number 13 Jersey. I can still remember mostly every play from 1990 on in every game highlight they show that's how into it I was when I was 12/13 years old compared to now it reminds me of the WWF and to be honest I can't even name a player off the Dolphins team today. Like the announcer was saying there's so many rules now that you can't even touch the quarterback but back then I remember when Merino broke as Achilles tendon he would still come out and play with a freaking ski boot on, and today you can't even touch these quarterbacks without getting a 15-yard penalty which is horrible and that's why a lot of his records were broken but like everything else they pussified everything in this day and age and you can't even touch the quarterback because God forbid they get a little boo boo. I'd like to see Tom Brady come out and play with a torn Achilles tendon and basically have to wear a ski boot to protect it. It'll never happen, and plus, we all know Miami never ever had a running game, so most of those wins and playoff wins came directly off the arm of Marino. But anyway, I'm not the type to come up here and cry and make excuses. I just know what Marino was capable of and what one man can only do on a 11 Man offensive team

Dan Marino was the equal of or (much) better than any quarterback who ever won a Super Bowl. He was the fastest, most pinpoint accurate passer the NFL has ever seen. And remember, through virtually Marino’s entire 17-year career, no other AFC team won a Super Bowl, until Terrell Davis joined the aging Elway & Broncos.

I am of kind of rare opinion here,but I put MARINOS prime yrs of non playoffs squarely on DON SHULA,he had Dan,MARKS BROS,crash,but could not put a D unit together at that point to save his life and then when SHULA finally started drafting some studs on that side of the ball,OFFERDAHL,COX,BOWENS,VINCENT,Plus adding S LOUIS OLIVER,they had some PCs in place and u could just tell the main problem early 90's was they lacked consistency and the even bigger issue was they did not make in game or second half adjustments and that's what lead to so many shootouts along with the run game being lackluster at best,but imo I still say it was SHULA not getting rid of OLIVIDOTTI for another crucial stretch of MARINOS final Prime yrs,so that 8 yrs run which was MARINOS PRIME yrs there was NEVER,EVER a complete team around him however I do feel if they had a better DC in the early to mid 90's especially the 92-94 seasons they had a chance to catch Buffalo,in 92 they were at home in the AFC title GM as div winners and that is one of those times I'm saying,would have been nice to bail Dan out fir a game and at least keep it close and give him a chance to win it but ended up in a blowout,per usual!!

I’ve been watching a lot of old Miami dolphin games from the 80s on KZbin. Two things stand out Tony Nathan was a good running back who averaged about 5 yards per carry for his whole career. He actually averaged 5 yards per carry,if you take out his first two years. He just didn’t get a lot of carries. Also for his career his reception yards and running yards were just about equal. The other thing is almost every time Marino threw the ball he was getting clobbered, right after he threw the ball . Dan Marino was tough.

Apart of his physical skills, which were superb, he was also extremely competitive and would fight till the last second. I remember a game where he threw five interceptions in a row and somehow he ended winning it. He would get in the face of teammates DURING the game, but never point fingers AFTER the game, even if they deserved it. The Dolphins didn’t do right by him and were always a flawed team without a running game or a decent defense. He deserved at least one ring, but I’m proud of how he represents them now. Dan is the man, and will always be.

Dan Marino was a very talented young athlete when he graduated high school. Could have been a MLB player, but he chose football instead. The guy had the quickest release of any QB I've seen to this day and he could throw the ball down the field whenever needed. Always hear people try to down play what he accomplished because his team never won a Super Bowl. That may be true, but trying to use a TEAM TROPHY to judge the talent on an individual player, is asinine. Dan Marino IS one of the Top 10 QB's in the history of the NFL.

Yes, Marino was the goat, unfortunately his chances of winning a ring were undermined by a cheap owner, for those too young to remember, Dolphins went for years signing 1st, 2nd and 3rd round drafts picks halfway through the season, and the mystery of Tom Olivadotti being kept in Miami for so long. However you have to credit Shula for developing Marino to that level. When Marino arrived Shula scrapped the early 70's Dolphins power run scheme and pulled out from the shelf another one of his playbooks from an era when he coached the Colts with another great, Johnny Unitas. PS Don Shula was not only the goat, but also genius and a pioneer of the game. Dolphins fan since 1970

Duper and Clayton, the Marks Brothers. The Dolphins under Marino made the Shotgun a now common offensive formation. Later in his career Marino wore a visible knee brace that made him extremely slow and vulnerable in the pocket which is one reason for the constant shotgun position. It gave him a few more steps on the rush. Although he never won a Superbowl I would pick him any day over Bledsoe. Not saying it would be the wise decision but man I loved the 80's and early 90's Dolphins. 🏈

I was an avid Dolphin fan long before Marino came on board. Marino was clearly an exceptional qb that looked to be unstoppable but was. It was tough to watch the amazing Shula and Marino flaunt such skill but fail to really achieve much, despite being contenders for most of the 80s/90s. What I most remember is how temperamental Marino could be when things didn't go his way. I got the feeling that there wasn't great chemistry between the two (Shula/Marino) and often wondered if this was partly to blame for their lack of ultimate success. By the time Marino had settled down a bit, the team lacked talent in many positions and it just seemed like timing was never on his side.

As a lifelong Jets fan, Marino was the guy I loved to hate the most when I was a kid - especially considering that the Jets were one of the teams that had passed on Marino only to draft a different QB named Ken O'Brien. Ken was a good QB, but never consistently reached the elite level of play that Marino did. I've always wondered how good the Jets would have been if they drafted Marino instead of O'Brien. Oh well. Woulda. Coulda. Shoulda. He was a great player and real Jets killer. I hated him (for killing the Jets more often than not) but respected the heck out of him.

The best passer ever. No defense. No running game. The one year he led the Dolphins to the Super Bowl, they still had the remnants of a great 1970's defense. Jimmy Johnson coaches, defense improves 300%!!! So...in the tone of cold stark reality...Don Shula WRECKED the growth of that team into a last ditch 4 or 5 seasons with J.J. as coach. The running game also improved greatly when J.J. got there. 🤔

While I think he gets a bit too many excuses for his playoff shortcomings, him never winning a SB doesn't negate the fact he was a master of pocket presence. The fastest release of all time and nigh impossible to sack.

How good was Marino? I had season tickets in Miami throughout his career, so I got to see him up close, and for me he’s the greatest pure passer in the history of the game. He routinely threw over 4,500 yds a year and of course had the 1 over 5,000 when that was unheard of, and a good completion % was around 57%. Only Montana/Young in the original version of Walsh’s offense had completion % in the 60’s and the 70’s which is routine today, simply didn’t exist. Marino in his prime under today’s NFL rules would routinely throw for over 5,000, probably flirt with 6,000 and easily have a completion % over 70%. While he was not mobile, he had incredible footwork in the pocket and was very hard to sack simply because he made his reads and got rid of the ball so quickly, with that incredible quick release throwing motion. And this was all without any running game after his 2nd season, when the entire world knew he was throwing the ball. The Dolphins’ offense during his years under Shula was very much ahead of its time, similar to Air Coryell. If the team had been able to give him a defense, they would’ve won several Super Bowls with Dan.

Marino's super-power was his incredibly quick release - his accuracy was up there with the best as well - but the fast release allowed him to avoid so many sacks - he still took plenty of hits after getting the pass away - as this was back when defenders were still allowed to hit the QB and not draw a flag very often ..

Don Shula is said to have told his assistant coaches after seeing Danny for only two weeks of his rookie training camp, to start force feeding him the playbook, make him call all his own plays to get him ready to start. Dan entered his first game in week 6 and never looked back.

@@9999deoxys They went to the SB in Dan's second year but the 49ers had a much superior team with both sides of the ball loaded with Pro bowl/HOF talent. After that the Dolphins team got old around Dan as it was very much a veteran team (having been to the SB the year before dan was drafted. The Dolphins had some bad injury luck when Dan played but they had a couple very good teams but just didn't get by to the SB again. But it was never dan's fault...he was always spectacular and carried the team single handedly for many many games/seasons.

@@9999deoxys I saw them both play in their prime and I would disagree...Bob was a very talented QB, but his championship teams were loaded with HOF and All-Pro talent...Bob's OL was perhaps the best ever or at least in that argument and his defense was also ranked at the top of the league. Shula and the Dolphin front office were not able (poor drafting and some very unlucky injuries to top picks that looked promising) to build a championship level team around Dan and the couple years Dan did have the talent the cards just didn't fall right and there were teams with better talent 9the Bills on their SB teams).

Dan Marino was extremely reliable at his position. He's almost always had a top O LINE and outstanding receivers. When the dolphins went to the super bowl in his second year, he still had the remnants of a great 70's defense and running game to go with his passing accuracy, and power.

Die heart pats fan and Tom Brady fan. Tom threw 50 TDs when the rules favored QBs. Dan threw 48 when you could borderline murder the QB with no rules to protect them. He may be the best QB in NFL history who never won a ring.

Anytime someone brings something up about Marino, I always think about Kelly up there in Buffalo. He’s an interesting story too, all those superbowl losses plus his home life, surviving cancer and losing his only son to some rare disease.

But there really is no comparison when you consider that Kelly played good enough to help his team win 4 Conf. Championships and Marino played good enough to help his team win only 1 Conf. Championship. Twice, in '91 and '93 Kelly had a Defense that was Ranked 27th out of 28 teams using OFFICIAL NFL Rankings.

On top of that, Kelly outplayed Marino all 3 times they met in the playoffs, including the '92 Conf. Championship Game that was played in Miami. Plus, Kelly played his team into position to win the '90 S.B. game only to have his kicker (Scott Norwood) miss the game-winning field goal.
