「ダライアス」シリーズの通算3作目。これまでの同シリーズの特徴であった多画面構成から1画面になった一方で、新システムとして「ブラックホールボンバー」が登場。それに伴い操作方法も空中弾＋地上弾の発射となる通常攻撃ボタンと、画面上の敵にダメージを与えるブラックホールボンバーの特殊攻撃ボタンに変更されている。28ゾーンからルートを選ぶ全7ステージ。企画段階では今作が1画面方式のダライアスだったことから、多画面を特徴とするダライアスの続編的な位置づけとなる「ダライアスIII」の名を付けることを避け、サブタイトルにある「シルバーホーク」となる予定だった。
ストーリー:
ダライアス星での戦いの後、死の国と化したダライアス星を脱出し、他の惑星に移民した人々がいた。時は過ぎ、移民した人々は再び故郷ダライアス星へ帰る決心をした。その準備が着々と進む中、中継ポイントのステーション等が次々に破壊されていった。破壊者は、ダライアス星、移民星ヴァイディスに向かって魔の手を伸ばしていった。再び最新鋭機シルバーホークが戦いに向かっていく。

In the game, the third in the "Darius" series; the player flies an ornate fighter craft called a Silver Hawk. The craft is equipped with two attack weapons : Missile (forward-firing standard gun) and Bomb (drops from the bottom of the ship). The Silver Hawk is also equipped with the 'Arm' (armor); a green energy shield that can absorb enemy attacks without harm to the ship. Some enemies leave panels behind that can be collected to power-up your shots, missiles or shield.
The graphics and sound are superior to those of the previous Darius games, and the game employs a lot of impressive visual effects; for example, the Silver Hawk warps into a stage dramatically in the fourth-tier stages, and begins to burn on re-entry at the start of the sixth-tier stages.
The bosses are huge and far more complex than those of the previous games, each employing several attack patterns and explode with powerful warping and twisting effects upon their defeat.

Darius Gaiden was released in September 1994.
The title of this game translates from Japanese as 'Darius Side Story - Silver Hawk'.
Pony Canyon / Scitron released a limited-edition soundtrack album for this game (Darius Gaiden - PCCB-00166) on November 18, 1994.
There was an EXTRA version in this game and it was their official hack with increased rapid fire, and swapped bosses. In this EXTRA version, in a 1-player game, if you press 2P Start, you won't be able to select your path at the end of a level, and you'll have to complete the 28 levels to end the game. The same "trick" is available in a 2-player game if you press 2P Start first, then let Player 1 join in.

2は死んだら初期装備から、初代は戻り復活だからなんだかんだ言ってペナルティが装備1段階弱体化なだけ優しい

STGが苦手な自分でも簡単なルートでなら何とかクリア出来たの初代とコレだけ 連射機能が付いてたならの話なんでやっぱり難しいのは変わらないか

2Pだとやはりパワーアップがきついっすね､1Pだと終盤は赤勲章を回避するのに必死になるのに…… ストームコーザーは(たしか)次の攻撃が酷いので､ノーミス目標ならボムってでも速攻でやらないとキケンっすね

These games are all low res sprites, a 4K monitor would only force upscale them, making them look worse. These games were built for CRT monitors, not LCD monitors.

You can take control of mini bosses if you take their ball without killing them. These mini bosses are known as Captains. G Darius would reuse the concept, but up the ante BIG TIME, allowing you to not only control the Captain's to attack, but turn them into a HUGE beam to combat each boss's own beams.
