I met Mario on the starting grid at Laguna Seca, was standing next to his car just before the race he walks up and introduces himself. Graciously allows me to sit on the right front tire him standing for pictures. The nicest fellow truly one of the greatest drivers in all motor sports.

Its amazing how things changed since then. The split. Newman and Hass both died and the team ended. All those drivers are retired and in their 50's and 60's now. ABC/ESPN is out. They dont race at Laguna Seca since 2001 I think. CART is dead. All the sponsors are gone. The craziest thing is KMART was sponsoring the cars. How things change in 24 years.

fordfocusonme, I couldn't agree more with you. Al Unser had two absolutely brilliant team mates and destroyed them both and the rest of the field. He was my favourite Indycar driver.

I always thought it was funny when people talk about CART 1994 they talk about Mansell's terrible year. How about Unser's great year?

Mario was right the split was bad. He should have negotiated with CART and Tony George to keep the INDY 500 the top race it was still at that time in the 90s.

We need CC and IRL together IRL is needed for the 500 and Ovals....for it to be like before the split..CC dont like ovals no more.... It wont be what it once was for years after the merge (if they ever again)...because f1 vets wont trust it right away, like they did in the old days. man those old days were great....and i realized that when i was 7.

That's kind of what it's become. Sure, I think the series needs an extra oval and road course, but it's basically become this.
