Remember watching this live late at night in Sydney. One of the greatest sporting feats I have ever witnessed. What struck me was that when he touched there was no other swimmer on screen! Incredible swim. Monstered the world record.

What’s amazing about this is that this time is right with the winning time at the Olympics last year, 27 years later.

This time would've got on the podium in every worlds since except 2009 (supersuits) and 2019. Also every Olympics except 2008 and 2016.

The most amazing thing about this race was that Perkins was the only swimmer in shot on the screen when he was finishing...that’s how far back the others were. Then Thorpe came along four years later.

Kieren Perkins is my hero in the sport of swimming. Nobody swims like him. I know some of you are saying Thorpe or Hackett but Kieren Perkins doesn’t just break world records he absolutely destroyed world records. He’s the greatest distance swimmer of all time. #superfish

Don't understand how Perkins just faded in this event after this swim? He didn't even qualify for the 1996 Olympics

I find that really surprising that he didn't qualify at this distance for Atlanta. He would have won the race easily.
