Actually Orlando woolridge was the first to go through his legs in the 84 dunk contest but nowhere near as good as this one.

You're right! J.R. had so much more energy, flare, power, and passion when he threw it down plus the audience and the commentators were so much more hyped and enthusiastic during this 1994 contest whereas in 1984 the audience would clap after the made dunks but beyond that you didn't hear any music playing in the arena and it was quiet as a library outside of the P.A. announcer mentioning the scores after each dunk. Still nice to see these players set the trends with their original version of the dunk and then see newer versions come along years later because each newer version has slight differences in how it's executed (example: Julius Erving with is foul line slams in 1976 and 1984 and then followed up by Michael Jordan with his versions in 1987 and 1988). =)

Shawn Kemp is by far the best runner-up in contest history. I mean overall career of course. The greatest single-year runner-up is still AG.

Man, Shawn Kemp had no energy left for this final round! Kind of sad since he came out with so much style in that first round of dunks. He really could have come out with some flashy stuff if he'd had more energy or mental focus I suppose!

I would agree. What works for figure skating does not work for basketball. They are different sports and watching each dunk performed one after the other is not the same as watching a figure skater twirl around on the ice for a full two minutes. To me, you have to enjoy each individual dunk attempt on its own merits and cramming all the attempts together under a time limit takes away a bit of excitement from being able to analyze each individual dunk plus it shortens the contest from an hour to thirty minutes. Speeding up the contest like that makes it feel rushed and takes away some of the anticipations of learning what each player has to offer.

I think if Ryder's dunk didn't get over-scored (a 49.0?? come on!), then Robert wouldn't have felt such pressure to get a perfect score on his last dunk. And he would've won.. Ryder got lucky stealing the win from Pack. He should've received extra points for difficulty due to his height.. just like they did for Spud! Charles even mentioned the height issue. The dunks that Pack completed were really amazing for a guy his height. I also think that Ryder had a lot of hype going into the contest which the judges bought into. IN MY EYES YOU WON, BOBBY P!! THE PAC MAN!!!!
