There were a few movies released very close after this work was finished with similar rotating concentric rings such as 'Contact' & 'Event Horizon' both released in 1997. You could say coincidence & even that these movies concentric rotating rings were more closely representing a Gyro Scope, however the timing of these movies & the similarities are interesting...
