One of the biggest problems I see is control. How will the actualtors be ultimately controlled. Because if it is a constant concious effort, with the hands controlling it, it will always be clunky and slow. One thought I have had was to use the same sensores used in prostethics to controll it. Locate them on the muscles that would do the movement without the armour, and use those signals to move the armor. That would with some training make the armour move very natural. The sensors could be sewn into a form fitting undersuit, and you also get the benefit of the sensors being pressed tight to the skin out of the pressure sleeves that hold you in place inside the armour.

Can’t remember the books but they had a system like that, a suit like spandex but was made up of sensors that read every muscle fibers movement and could read down like to bone depth signals. That meshed with the suit once you stepped into it. Edit: being able to see all the muscle signals makes fine movements and all axis rotation infinitely more controllable.

As a builder of historical armor, one way medieval armorers distributed the weight of the armor is by focusing it more on the natural waist between the ribs and pelvis rather than the chest and shoulders. I know it'll be supported with legs eventually but still :)

If they knew more about anatomy they could really elevate the design. The collar bone is part of a whole oval shaped shoulder girdle crafted by nature. It's beautiful and incredibly powerful/efficient. There is a ton of potential for the suit if they paid more attention to what evolution already largely perfected.

Also to note is that the wearer steps on platforms that are above the ankle joints of the power armor. Essentially, the wearer’s hands and feet aren’t in the hands and feet of the power armor itself.

Exactly. It's not like a normal suit of armor, it's genuinely a mech that you wear. Arms and legs are extended out further on the armor than the pilot inside, making you taller and have further reach

I just want to say how impressed I'm already are, with this project. Like, I really think that's possible to recreate fricking power armor one to one. Not like close enough, or what is possible in reality,. We are talking about a one to one replica with all functions. Especially this crazy nano process with the metal to make real life Adamantium, while still being super light, makes this armor really functional. It looks like the game, it sounds like the game, the height is right, I already see it before my eyes and it's glorious. Must be my favorite project so far after the discovery of real life Adamantium. Keep it up!

Next time you guys make armor it might be a good idea to start with a frame designed to fit the pilot's specs first, so that the various parts of the suit can fit around the proportions of any of the testers. Then they can be comfortably inserted without fear of pinches or snapped backs, no matter the dimensions of the over arching suit. It might make things a bit more bulky, but there might be less "There's a giant metal rod when my chin needs to be!" type issues. Otherwise its exterior is looking awesome!

Idk if its already planed or not, and i am still watching the video rn, but i thought, if it wouldnt be cool, if there were some sensors in the arms, that may read the pressure. Those could than controll the hydraulics, so the arm assists with a smoother and easier. Dk about the feedback loop though.. but maybe you guys can feagure sth out there ^^

You will want to use fluid in those fitting bladders. Air wont give you nearly the resistance you're going to need without being under high pressure. But the beauty of it is is that you can use that for heat dissipation and force feedback.

You could put buttons inside the arm sleeve where your fingers rest. Like the handheld controller used with a VR headset to control the arm movement. One button to bind up and down, to vent and open the armor for both arms. So that the armor is fully self-operated and no extra people or hands are needed. But it's just an idea, I hope it's helpful.

I think you may have started in the wrong order on this build. If you had started with the legs you could have had a lower frame that was strong enough to support all of the weight of the lower frame. Throughout the video you had issues where all of the weight was being supported on the shoulders and spine. Realistically you would want that weight as low as possible so that the user isn't the one that is actually supporting the frame but that the frame supports itself. In a way it is kinda like building a house and then putting it on its foundation. You can do it that way and I am sure that by part 6 is probably will come together nicely but like I said, it is a little out of order.

you would need to calculate in advance how much weight the legs need to support, knowing the weight by volume, of materials for every single component, plus that any additional mass such as jetpack or weapon systems. I am actually wondering if and how they'll safely get the mid section to bend and or twist while having room in the arm for an Iphone let alone a pip boy.

The reason why they are starting with the upper body first is because James had already done prior work on an upper body exoskeleton years ago. So, with most of the work being done there, they just built on top of that first because it would be easier. The lower is definitely coming though.

a note on the proportions, I noticed this in the last video but waited to see if the chest piece would fix it. The issue is the arms are too close to the chest, pay attention to how they stance up in the power armor its more so wide armed like you would expect from a body builder with arms too big, and the elbows are pointed inward, but so far its looking great and can't wait to see it complete.

Yeah and a bitch to set up, has to be custom fitted and set up for every single user and has a steep price point. Intuitively it may sound like a good idea, unfortunately it really isn't.

It may be extremely helpful to look at large hiking / frame backpacks waist straps or structural cummerbunds on body armor. A belt that allows the weight of the mechanism to be driven into the hips rather than resting on the shoulders would greatly help the amount of weight you would be able to carry with the arms. A hip belt is standard on any heavy backpack or device meant to be worn on the torso. The weak point of this system is the individuals spine. By using a hip belt, the weak point becomes an individuals legs. Legs are much stronger and less prone to injury than the spine. Of course the end goal would be to have a lower mechanical frame to match the upper frame so that all of the weight is driven into the ground instead of a body part of the individual wearing the suit. Until you have a set of mechanical legs, use a hip belt! Protect your spine!

I did a project last year on exoskeletal control systems using air bladders. Not sure if you're taking the same route, but air bladders easily create proportional control through integrated pressure sensors. Ok here’s an idea idk if your gonna see it but I think you should make a hydrogen reactor with a tank on the front to use as the “fusion core” in the back of the suit so you can use compressed hydrogen instead of compressed air for the strength of the suit ,and on the inside I think you should use electrodes to go on your arm so when your muscles strain to pick something up the pistons win kick in giving you strength, so you will have free movement , and strength at the same time. So nobody has to control it from the outside

Wow, this looks amazing. If you want a fancy material for the eyes, it might be worth looking into ALON, it's meant to be able to stop up to a 50 BMG. Of course, it can be a little tricky to source, since Surmet is the only supplier really. But hey, you got to protect the eyes somehow. ;) (oh, nice shoulder welds, they're looking pretty strong)

I wonder if it would be worth making the width between the shoulder joints adjustable as different users will have variations in how broad their shoulder length is, same concept would apply when you get to the legs as someone who’s legs are longer would struggle to fit if the frame is to small, it may be worth it so long as you don’t need to rebuild any parts from scratch.

I do think you are going about how you wear it a little backwards. The inflated parts should only keep the person inside from being rattled around like the ball bearing in a spray paint can, not to use it for padding to support the rig itself. I agree with other commenters the bar across the chest needs cut out and bent so it is lower than the neck. To get the fit better, you need the legs and have the frame able to support it's own weight first. Then all the air bags or bladders do is keep the person snug inside the frame but not actually supporting any weight.

You might need some backup systems to keep the elephant safe, but it’d be really cool, especially if lifting the elephant could actually help with veterinary tasks. Crazy idea, but could be fun. When we pressure test compressed air systems on new installs we use nitrogen bottles with a regulator. We set the system to 180 and test for leaks. A nitrogen bottle and the right regulator would allow you to fill that air tank on the power armor over and over and over. The regulator goes to 3000 psi or some crazy amount. More pressure, more power. Just avoid burst pressures on all those parts. The best thing about nitrogen, no moisture. Tri-arc in Cambridge has the bottles, or Air Liquide

I was so happy when I saw you were building this because when you announced your build of the mark 1 Iron man suit I commented requesting you to build power armor, now I know my comment you probably didn't even see, so I didn't influence the decision of making the armor, but it still makes me happy. I think its safe to assume that the suit is going to use some sort of steel or other alloy for the shell, but for better ballistic protection i'd recommend putting an aramid (or fiberglass) liner on the inside to prevent theoretical spall from hurting the user and to offer additional protection like how older ballistic helmets did. The metal breaks up and slows down the incoming projectile, and the aramid layer spreads out the force further and catches the fragments. Fiberglass is a pain to work with and its bulkier but its a real cost saver and quite ballistically effective. Cheers from America!

@@vos2693 Steel plating and fiberglass is pretty cheap, and if theyre going out of their way to build something like this then it would be a pretty negligible cost increase. I take this more as a fun proof of concept inbetween a cosplay suit and something of practical use, just to innovate and have fun. Theres already lots of good cosplay solutions for suits like this anyways so thats why I think like this.

@@hacksmith Sounds like a good design to me! As long as the nanovite stays bonded over the complex geometry I think it'll work great. I'd be hard to get a good strong strike face without spending lots of money on fabrication otherwise, and it saves a lot of internal volume as well which I can imagine is much appreciated for anyone wearing it 😂

I know this is a little off topic, and the project is already much further along, but have you tought about some sort of sensory feedback system for the hands? Some kind of sensors in the fingers to translate over to the controls? Perhaps something similiar to VR haptic gloves? Since the wearer doesnt actually have his hands where the suit has them, you could use those to control a larger mechanical hand with either the resistance or pressure difference the mechanical fingers recieve translating over to the gloves

You guys should print the armor In 0.5-1 Inch Polycarbonate. That, in addition the Integran nanovate metal alloy coating, and a Kevlar lining, will make the armor indestructible. however shock and vibration absorption is an important factor to consider as well.
