Thank you SO much for this video! My 2002 Taco Check Engine Light came on - error code indicated cylinder 3 was misfiring. I bought a set of BOSCH brand Iridium plugs. Got home, opened the hood and was immediately taken aback to see the intake covering the very plug that I needed to access most of all. Intimidating to see some disassembly necessary to access the plugs. I never worried about this type of thing on my Pontiac Grand Am SS - which I wrenched on quite freely. Seeing this video has me feeling a bit better about jumping in to this project.

Excellent tutorial, bud. If i could add anything it would be double checking both the old plugs and the new plugs for the crush washer as well as documentation of any irregularities in the removed plugs; i.e any abnormal fouling, pitting or fluids on said plug. This will give you an idea of any further diagnosis you may need per cylinder. Also, with long plug boot applications like the 3.4, i would definitely recommend dielectric grease on the ceramic part of the plug. This will prevent the boot from seizing and possibly breaking due to thermal breakdown of the plug boot itself. Wouldn't hurt to squeeze a little into the electrical connection for the coil over plug connector too, as well as checking the o rings inside that connection. I appreciate you stressing twisting the boots prior to removal, big help in breaking loose old, stubborn plug boots. One at a time is always a must to get the lengths right on those wires, good tip there. Look forward to seeing your other videos

Did mine today and the springs were shot and falling in pieces back into the plug hole. I had to use a length stranded wire stripped on the end like a hook to catch it and bring it back out. Folks, Always check inside the plug hole for pieces of spring and debris before removing the spark plug!

I've found using a 6 to 10 inch piece of rubber hose (sold at all auto stores) pushed snugly on the end of the spark plug works better than an extension or pliers to start a spark plug. Once threaded in pull hose off then use socket w/extension. The rubber hose will hold the plug firmly without risk of damaging the plug.

I always use neverseize on my spark plugs but I usee a small artists paint brush to apply it sparingly. I noticed that one of your vacuum lines had a split in it so you should replace that hose.

On the passenger side, what do you call the piece that’s directly above the engine block that the 3 coil packs bolt into? I am installing (or trying to) a helicoil because I have a stripped the threading in the block and blew my spark plug out of the engine destroying the coil pack, any insight? It seems I need to remove the piece that all the coil packs attach to in order to fit my 19mm tap into the head.

I believe you are referring to your valve cover. It's fairly simple to remove, but need to take off a few components. Im actually in process of making a video for a valve cover gasket job, a bit too late though for your current needs though

bullmoosebell not necessary at all, just follow my suggestion in video of snug tight which is essentially once you feel resistance it's about tight enough. All you are trying to accomplish is an air seal. The spark plug isn't holding down a rotating item like a wheel or piston

Recommended but not necessary. Snug tight will be the approximate equivalent of the proper torque specification. Snug tight example, how you would tighten a cap to a jar

I can't remember the exact lengths, but in the video I show you how I match the correct lengths. I take off one spark plug wire at a time and compare to the new wires to ensure I install correct lengths in correct spot. Hope that helps!

I have a cylinder 4 misfire code and I removed spark plug # 4 and it looked good. You have any idea what else it can be??????

Just because it looks good, it may still have a faulty spark. You could always swap the spark plug with another spark plug from another cylinder and see if the code changes cylinder. If it does, you know the spark plug is the issue. If not you know the issue is probably related to your coil pack possibly or internal to the cylinder. Let me know what you try next!

James panda great question, i did not. The spark plugs i purchased were pre gapped. Normally i would confirm gap before install with a gap gauge, but skipped my mind on this install. Usually the pre gap is spot on though

Consider changing the fuel filter, PCV valve, and spray clean the throttle body, and special cleaner for the MAP sensor on the air intake tube. All of these are easy to do, and will gain you a better running truck little milage too.

I did mine 2000 4runner last night first time doing plugs i think. Can't remember. It took me 40 minutes, my 9 year-old daughter was helping me labeling the old ones back in the spark plug boxes and doing a drawing of where they came off. But my rig has less space than your driver side. The air cleaner and half the intake had to come off. Mine has a big resonator on top of coils. So had to take off stuff. Next, brake pads and rotors.

Nice, this job wont take long if you have good access or take out what you need to allow access. I need to do a new valve cover gasket next on my taco. 4runners and Tacoma will treat you right as long as you do regular maintenance. If you remember, let me know how the rotor job goes. I have yet to replace mine. Been wondering how much work needs to go into it

I use Denso sparks over NGK, and like you always get the OEM dual-tip spark plugs for this vehicle as it's recommended in our owner's manual. My buddy is a master Toyota mechanic, and he says it's ok to use a little anti-seize on sparks and no need to gap the Denso or NGK spark plugs. He also likes Import Direct spark plug wires from OReilly as they are clipped together for easy install and wire longevity. I also clean my bolts and reinstall with a very light coating of lubricant.

Do you mean whether the spark plugs were the orinigal manufacturer toyota chose? You can google the year, make, and model of your vehicle and the part your looking to replace "original manufacturer". It'll tell you the original manufacturer. Typically for spark plugs Toyota used Denso brand

MisterHungWang in my opinion there will not be a noticeable difference. Key word noticeable. Using a multi tip spark plug may get you a more complete combustion reaction, but nothing an average daily driver will notice. And thanks for the feedback and question!

As long as you use iridium you should be fine with single tip. Multi tips were recommended on this truck because iridium plugs were not commonly used in the early 2000s and this motor fires each plug twice per cycle which can lead to premature wear and possible damage to a non-iriduim single tipped plug.

There are multiple possibilities why a cylinder can misfire. You may simply have a loose spark plug? Obviously if it's time to change him then you would do so but I'm of the school of thought diagnosed the problem first before you arbitrarily start replacing components! * Safety tip: Disconnect your battery before you work on your car especially electrical components!

Question for whoever has a intelligent answer I’m doing work on my buddy’s 02 Tacoma although I do things like that as favor for favor trade with friends example I know basic mechanics he knows welding I do tune up for him he welds bs for me anyway up until he got this truck I’ve never had to mess with anything other than American. Can’t find info on the problems going on and want to be sure before I do useless labor. The ignition lock cylinder is worn out causing the need to jiggle to start and key can be removed in on and running position witch wasn’t an issue until I tried programming a new key fob. It might not have the controller for that but it concerns me because apparently there is a anti theft sensor that was used for Toyota around that year that worked off the key pins inside the housing and they should lock the key in place and if they can’t do so and it is turned the sensor keeps it from starting and the alarm sounds off also if a key is used while doing this it doesn’t lock it in. I’m thinking at one point in time the key got stuck and this was seen as an easy bypass for someone because they didn’t have the key fob to shut off the alarm giving the fact it’s an alarm for hot wire not entry. Bypassing the sensor will cause the security system to not know and or think the correct key is always in preventing the alarm to be set given the hopes it has one because power locks and windows with a little light next to the gear box switch is a red flag that it does. The part I’m not sure of because of little to no information I can find about this model is that I know this truck has a sensor that tells the shifter to unlock when the key is on and half the cars I’ve done ignition repair on “never for this reason” have ether one sensor to do both jobs, two do separate one shifter one alarm, or has alarm sensor and mechanical parts that release a lock for the shifter. I’m not sure what year make or model the mechanical one is in because I’ve never seen or noticed because nobody with one I know has problems with it. But please if you have done similar or spot on stuff like what I’m doing please reply and help me trouble shoot to avoid having to remove the key lock from the switch because it means cutting out rivets and essentially re keying a lock twice because they are mirrored both sides and will be pointless if it’s just that worn out causing it to do that because that will be a big disappointment especially when you cut little bits off something when there dash is apart and it doesn’t fix the problem people get mad and that’s no good for reputation. Any and every experience or intelligence information on all of the above is greatly appreciated! Please help!!

That is correct, it's a 3.4 V6 shown in the video but he process is still very similar for a 4 cylinder

@@EngineeredMojo The plugs on a 4 cyl are deep inside of the valve cover and you need a special tool that will secure the plugs in order to screw them in..
