1995 ALDS, Game 5: Yankees @ Mariners

New York Yankees 5 at Seattle Mariners 6, F/11 -- The Mariners had come back from a 0-2 series deficit to force a deciding Game 5, and were back home in front of a frenzied Kingdome crowd with high expectations. Yankees' starter David Cone held a 4-2 lead going into the eighth, but surrendered Ken Griffey Jr.'s fifth homer of the series, and walked in the game-tying run with the bases loaded. Rookie fireballer Mariano Rivera arrived to strike out Mike Blowers to keep the game tied at the end of eight. In the ninth, both Game 3 starters -- Randy Johnson for the M's and Jack McDowell for the Yanks -- came on in relief; both pitched two scoreless innings. When Johnson allowed a run in the 11th, and the Yanks took the field confident with their one-run lead, but Edgar Martinez doubled home two off a tiring McDowell to give the Mariners the series and a ticket to the LCS. It was Don Mattingly's last game.

Man, oh man. I miss those days. I remember EXACTLY where I was watching that inning. (eleventh) I was at South Center mall, and they had a TV on in one of the stores display window, and a small crowd included myself watched how it all unfolded. With the hit by Griffey, and then Edgar gaming winning hit that followed was absolutely AMAZING. We all were just screaming and having a good time. That was a great moment in my life, and I was probably around 18 at the time. Moments like that is what made baseball fun for me. So hopefully, the Mariners can put together a team that works well together and also win together so in the future, another young kid could have great memories the way I do and did.

Just an absolute beast of a pitch to a guy already running scared who’s 2 for 16 against the guy, and that was the early Johnson. Not the 94-96 Johnson. But man, this game Johnson just ruled! Was it all for nothing? Yes and no. I mean they didn’t get past the Indians, but they did beat Griffey’s rivals from back when he was a kid. And this was the series that decided if Mariners get a new stadium. Their roof on this one fell down a month prior. And Without a new stadium they leave Seattle for ever. The vote for taxes to pay for it was so close but lost, and it was winning these play offs that had the mayor call for a special meeting to pay for it anyways. So without these play offs we don’t get ichiro, we don’t get Griffey back in his last season, Ichiro’s dream. And we don’t get one of the worst baseball squads to continue for the next 25 years. Idk they had so many crazy things happen in their franchise history, but no World Series. And yet for the fans, they don’t care, they love this team and will always remember the mid 90’s and early 2000’s Mariners, but everyone will always remember the 1995 Seattle a Mariners, the most winning team in history at this point.

One thing I’ve always hated about ballgames is that fandom often transcends just respecting what all of the athletes are putting on the line. That’s what I love about a good ufc fight. Edgar Martinez only played 12 full seasons, but those 12 seasons were spectacular. Edgar put up .324/37/145 in his age 37 season! In 1993, Edgar had the same amount of runs scored (121) as Albert Belle who hit 50 home runs, Edgar only hit 29. Edgar Martinez and Frank Thomas were the best all-around hitters of the 1990s.

I'm 25 years old -- I was 8 months old when this happened. Needless to say, I don't remember it -- BUT I grew up loving this game. I had a little cassette tape titled something like '1995: a season to remember' and I listened to it over and over again as a kid! This is the first time I've watched the entire game though, and what a treat it was! So many great players and moments. I've grown up loving going to many games at Safeco (I know, T-Mobile) Field: "the house that Griffey built" - and Edgar, I'd add. The M's are my favorite Seattle team, despite their overall lack of success. So glad for '95 and the many years of Seattle baseball I've enjoyed as a result!

Best live sports experience of my life; definitely the noisiest building I've experienced (more than all three NFC Championship games next door) and the unbridled joy that exploded amongst the crowd when Griffey crossed the plate was fantastic. Pandemonium was an apt description...after 10-15 minutes of cheering (nobody wanted to leave!) they put the camera on Niehaus and showed him up on the diamond vision...played his call of The Double...and the crowd went crazy all over again. Ahh, memories...

@@thedude19766 Yeah he was, CBS coverage was supposed to start on April 14th 1990, but he was fired less than two weeks before the season started due to CBS not renewing his contract. We can go into what happened in that whole situation but that would take all night. Brent was eventually hired by ABC Sports on May 3rd 1990 to do mainly college football and basketball to avoid schedule conflicts with Al Michaels who was reportedly trying to get out of his contract with ABC to join CBS as the lead baseball announcer (after he was supposedly suspended for hiring his daughter as a messenger during the 1989 World Series) but those rumors were shot down and CBS settled with Jack Buck.

I was in the Seattle Kingdom for each of the 3 ALDS 1995 home games (as well as the Cleveland Indians games). The city-wide exuberance was something I'll never forget. It was ALL anyone talked about. I owned a coffee house at the time and the buzz was total dedication to the M's.

Guy was never linked to any steroids scandals, lists, etc. He was a complete hitter who is one of the top 5 hitters I saw play in the 1990s. The key factor some voters use is "Can you tell the story of baseball without ___________ ???" and I can't. You can't tell the complete history of baseball without Edgar Martinez, without how he defined complete hitting in the 1990s, and without this game right here which is one of the best games in one of the best postseason series ever played. The winning hit, knocking the Yankees out. Guy is a legend not just to M's fans but to baseball fans, like me, the White Sox fan. Pedro Martinez was asked who his toughest batter to face was on MLB Network and he said Edgar Martinez.

That Doug Strange at bat was so crucial. Yeah Edgar and Griffey basically single handedly took out the Yankees but the level of discipline to lay off a 3-2 split is so high. Without that great at bat baseball might not exist in Seattle. The at bat is still epic, every time I watch it my heart pounds.

I still never forget watching that series in 95. I went to game 3. There were a lot of Yankees fans at that game and they were so cocky. They were sure that it would be over that day. But the Ms swept the Yankees and we loved it. That 5th game was most fun game I've ever witnessed. It looked like like Griffey made up his mind halfway to second base that he was going to score. I honestly believe that I never saw him run faster. Edgar in my mind was and still is the greatest Mariner. Thanks to whoever posted. Great memories!

Its hard to put into words how much this one game meant and still means to Mariner fans, but it is sure incredible to watch. Mariner fan or not, this is a must see. People in Seattle still to this day, refer to that final play as "The Double." Goosebumps for sure. So good to see Edgar get in the hall.

When I went back and listened to Niehaus' radio call I was about as happy for him as I would have expected any Mariner fan to be. I replayed that call over and over just to hear Niehaus' joy.

One of the greatest games I’ve ever witnessed a great win for the mariners but arguably it launched the Yankee dynasty of the 90’s. And Brent Musburger’s intro was just epic. 3:39:46 Line Drive we are Tied Griffey is coming around. You knew as soon as that ball landed in the outfield they were sending him.

My dad brought me to this game with my sisters, I was 8. 33 now. We were in the nosebleeds. But that was alright. My dad passed nine years ago on this day june 14th. . The thing is, even all the movie-esque drama and the fact that it was the M's first playoff series aside, it's a just remarkable game from a remarkable series, and I mean that for both teams. It's frankly absurd how much there is to talk about. They went extra innings, what, 2 games out of 5? Both brought on Cy Young pitchers in relief. Both had crazy come-from-behind scoring moments. Both had mega-stars with tons of history, and both had players having career years. Griffey tied Reggie Jackson for homers in a playoff series, David Cone pitched I think 150-some pitches in game 5, Edgar set a record with 7 goddamn RBIs in a single playoff game and batted over .500 for the series... It's just unreal how much incredible baseball was played in this series.

I’m a yankee fan, and this series is something that I enjoy to look back on. Which sounds odd as a yankee fan but I love Edgar, one of my favorite non yankee players. I am happy that Edgar is finally getting the love he deserves over the past few years
