2001 World Series, Game 7: Yankees @ Diamondbacks

New York Yankees 2 at Arizona Diamondbacks 3, F -- A fitting finale to one of the best World Series ever. Surviving two stunning losses in Games 4 and 5, the Diamondbacks found their own late-inning magic in the person of Luis Gonzalez. It began with Hall-of-Fame-bound starters Roger Clemens and Curt Schilling trading zeros through six. Schilling was strong on only two days rest, but left trailing 2-1 in the 8th after an Alfonso Soriano solo HR. Out of the bullpen came Game 5 starter Miguel Batista to face one batter; then manager Bob Brenly made the gutsy call to Randy Johnson -- the Game 6 starter just the night before -- for his second-ever postseason relief appearance. The Big Unit was perfect for 1.1, but all seemed on track for NY as they summoned "automatic" closer Mariano Rivera to hold the one-run lead. Rivera was riding a string of 23 consecutive postseason saves and seemed as invincible as they come. Then, in events as almost as otherworldly as the rain that fell on them in the desert, Mo proved human... and the D-backs became the youngest franchise to win a title on Gonzalez' dramatic game-winning line drive.

I think McCarver felt the need to do too much in that combination, and that would sometimes lead to stupid things being said or "Captain Obvious" moments. But I will ask, have you watched any of the games broadcast by McCarver's old crew from ABC in the '80's-- when he was teamed up with Al Michaels and Jim Palmer? Jeffrey Masello Many of those classic postseason games announced by that ABC crew are up on youtube in MLB Classics. Some of their gems include the '85 and '87 World Series and the '88 NLCS. If you have any free time or aren't getting any good baseball in your life (definitely the plight of a Minnesota resident right now!) I'd highly recommend checking those games out. I watch them sometimes when I need a baseball fix, just to hear those guys' commentary.

von Draheim Greg Maddux was never able to dominate a postseason (it was Tom Glavine who was clutch in 95') or the Yankees the way Randy Johnson did in 01', but overall for his career, I have to agree that he was the best of his generation. It's a tossup for 2nd place to me between Maddux's golfing buddy and teammate Tom Glavine & Randy Johnson (amongst non-PED users). Tom Glavine was a rich man's Jamie Moyer w/ a modest personality that he's just not given the historical credit that he deserves, but overall stats show he's right there w/ Randy Johnson.

McCarver would often be 2 innings ahead during a game when discussing a manager's strategy, and why it would or wouldn't work. If a manager made a poor decision that cost his team a game, and McCarver pointed it out 2 innings earlier, he would bring it up again and explain it... but idiots who watch the broadcasts were always accusing him of "second guessing" the manager... and some managers (particularly Lou Pinella and Cito Gaston) would blast McCarver for second guessing them, simply because of what some fan told them. McCarver was by far the best analyst out there. McCarver came up as a catcher in the St Louis Cardinal organization...there's no better way to learn the game of baseball.

The enthusiastic celebration the trumpet player does when he nails the hard-to-play high notes. The roaring crowd and the stealth bomber fly-over setting the tone. The seemingly unbeatable Yankees coming for their 4th world series in a row... goosebumps. My favorite part is when McCarver predicts the play like a master of the game and it just unfolds before us. Womack's hit to tie the game has you believing there's a chance by tying the game up. Best hitter in the league up with bases loaded, best closer in the history of baseball on the mound...cut away shot to the Big unit Randy Johnson like a little kid at the fence watching the game... and then the moment. Watching Gibson jump for joy out of the dugout like a little kid on Christmas morning.. FANTASTIC. they can't make movies this good.

I'm by no means a baseball fan, but goddamn this was one of the best playoff series ever. When the Yankees won all three at home (two of which were from BK Kim's complete chokes) it was just a "WTF just happened?" moment. What I always thought was so great about this as an Arizona sports fan is that all anyone was talking about during this time was New York because of the World Trade Center, and everyone expected the Yankees to win (especially since they won the previous 3 years) and how uplifting it would be for New York, and it was New York this and New York that. It was getting all of this attention just because it was a New York team, then suddenly here comes this little team from Arizona who completely stunned everyone. Definitely a great moment for Arizona sports.

Diamondbacks fans should feel lucky that their accomplishment was part of and maybe at the peak of what turned out to be the pinnacle of post-strike baseball from 1998-2004 where baseball was able to match the NFL again after the NFL had gotten huge in the mid-90s. Of course we later found out it was basically fueled by steroids, but the fact remains, things that happened in baseball during that time are forever remembered in sports lore, while things in baseball since then, minus things like Cubs, Yankees, and Red Sox World Series, have been forgotten are are generally ignored by most casual sports fans. And the 2001 World Series, probably together with the 2003 and 2004 ALCS, were more than just part of that era they kind of were its peak and it’s defining moments. Legendary finish to one of the best World Series in history. To see the Diamondbacks come back and dethrone the 3x champions was incredible to watch. Diamondbacks were the underdogs going into the series but I would argue the Yankees were the underdogs during it. They were absolutely dominated in Games 1 and 2 in Arizona and pulled off unbelievable comebacks in 4 and 5 in New York. Got demolished in Game 6, and Game 7 came down to the last inning. Arizona was a completely different animal compared to the previous World Series opponents the Yankees have faced.

The Yankees "dynasty" died this night. Yes they won the pennant in 03 and the world series in 2009 but they never again had the aura of invincibility. The 96-01 Yankees didn't have the most talented players most of the time (98 the exception) but they always had that guy that made the clutch hit, the clutch pitch or the clutch catch when it counted. They came 2 outs away from 4-peating a series they were thoroughly dominated and needed 2 out and out miracles just to push to Game 6. Aft that, they were never the same. You had the sense they could be beaten and as the core of the 96-01 team disappeared one by one, the fear disappeared as well. In 2002 was anyone afraid when John Vander Wall stepped to the plate? Or Karim Garcia in 2003? Or Miguel Cairo in 2004? Once Nelson, Stanton and Mendoza moved on...were teams afraid of Paul Quantrill, Kyle Farnsworth and Jay Witasik? Bottom line was the Yankees were never the same again, and nobody fears them anymore.

It's so sad that things didn't work out. Originally, they were built to be a 10 year dynasty. They had what it took to win every single year from 96-06. Jeter should have gotten 10 championships and become the greatest winner to ever play a sport. Fuck the Diamondbacks, Fuck the Marlins, Fuck the Red Sox. Those were three more potential rings and jeter would have at least been at 8. And Im sure if they won those years, other players would have joined and others would stay. Idk I feel like for the Yankees they were mad dominate because they had MAD good team chemistry. Had lifelong yankees like jeter, williams, posada, rivera and others that were mad dedicated like martinez, o'neil, and brosius lol. than after 2001 they just went after MAD free agents like giambi, sheffield, a-rod, abreu, and damon lol messed them up. I was working for a photo finishing company and making a delivery run from Milwaukee to the Twin Cities and back that night. I turned the game off when the Yankees went ahead thinking it was over. Something told me to turn the radio back on. Wouldn't you know it, I turned it back on and it was right in the middle of that epic bottom of the ninth. Jon Miller went nuts when Gonzo hit that game winner. I cannot stand the Yankees. I was a very happy man that night.

I remember driving up the 51 in Phoenix to go to work that evening and seeing that bomber at 2:07 fly in front of me over the freeway while I was listening to the broadcast on my car radio. There’s nothing quite as distracting as watching something like that enter your field of vision while driving. A few hours later, after a tremendous game, the DBacks brought the first and, (thanks to Santonio Holmes) so far, the only World Championship home to the desert. What a game. What a series. Bringing Randy in as a reliever was such a great move. He was the heart and soul of this team that year, and you could feel the energy just drain out of the Yankees even as they had that one run lead. Their pitchers struggled to get DBacks hitters out the whole series, and they knew one run might not be enough, and then Randy came out and just sent them down in order two innings in a row. It was such a brilliant gutsy call down one, and although Randy didn't drive in the winning run, there's little doubt he was a huge contributor to the momentum swing and the victory here.

Living here in Phoenix and with the Diamondbacks only 2 years old it was exciting to see our team make it so fast to the world series but watching local people against them only because of what happened on 9/11 really sucked. It would have turned into a media frenzy if the Yankees won. I could already see headlines and news stories how the Yankees "saved" New York. It would have been a pathetic news talking heads dream and the news media would have milked it for all it was worth. We'll never forget this game. With Gonzo winning it, it couldn't have happened to a better person. Such a humble man. Historic game.
