Love my 94 ZR-1. Bone stock 12.4@114.6 mph on dry rotted gscs. Picked up a brand new 2015 mustang GT pp and ran them and the mustang was killed easily (best of 12.7@ 112.8mph). Few mods, long tube headers, deleted secondary throttle system, light flywheel and a corsa cat back with a tune (mostly to adjust for deleted sscondary throttle system) and she went 11.9 @121mph and put a co workers 2016 gt350 in the rear view at lunch time 😎. I’ve had my 93 Lt1 (has a 370ci solid roller LT4 making 630hp and spinning 8500rpm) for 23 years and the ZR-1 was my dream car. I have both now and am happy the world is seeing how amazing this car truly is and it’s potential with minor modifications to be even better. There have been stroker LT5s making over 800hp na and spinning 9000rpm. The ZR-1 came and went pre social media and pre fast n furious and that’s why it disappeared from memory. The newer generations grew up influenced by fast n furious and instead got certified for driving 💩 📦 with 🤡 mods. 99/100 kids have no clue what a c4 ZR-1 is and I’m fine with it. This car destroyed the Supra, 300zx, 3000gtvr-4, nsx, rx7, 911 turbo and many other cars in its time. Sure the f40 was a body kit bolted to wheels with a big turbo and got 4 mpg. The ZR-1 can gst 30mpg in 6th. King of the hill. Long love the king 👑 🙌🏼

I'm a big fan of the ZR1 and am currently looking to add one to the collection, however some of your comments are disingenuous to put it mildly. Do you still get 30 mpg with the secondary throttle system disengaged? An F40 gets way more than 4 mpg as well. More like 9 or 10, so you were way off there. Anyway the F40 is a superior sports car in every measurable way, looks a thousand times better, and will continue to appreciate much better than any ZR1, as it should considering its cost. Comparing the two cars at all is just silly. It's much more fair to say every car has strengths and weaknesses. The ZR1 is faster on track than many of its contemporaries. That is a strength of the car. It leaves something to be desired in steering feel though. A Porsche blows it away in that area which is significant considering that steering feel is a key ingredient in driving enjoyment. The interior is not up to par either. Squeaks and rattles don't impress a girlfriend or a wife.

When this car came out, we car nuts literally thought it was the end of any talk of competition from anyone else. Such accessible performance for budget(relative) dollars. That LT5 was such a smooth engine(Mercury Marine balance shafts and other bits from Lotus paid off). Totally transformed the C4. Amazingly the squeezed that type of everyday power in the early 90s yet we have a 6.2L V8 with supercomputers and direct fuel injection putting out "only" 495hp. And looking at Barrett Jackson, these C4 ZR1s and Grand Sports are shooting through the roof on value.
@bghoody56653 жыл бұрын
Agreed. The ZR-1 certainly delivered a lot of bang for the buck.
@Charlemagne893 жыл бұрын
Part of the reason the LT5 was so legendary was due to increased engine speed: the L98 wasn't spinning anywhere near as fast. When the C8 Z06 comes out the LT6 will be spinning MUCH quicker as well, which will make up for its smaller displacement over the LT2 6.2L mill. 600hp doesn't sound like a lot but its a smaller engine displacement, N/A and will be a high-end screamer much like the classic LT5 was.

I have a 93 modified to 630 hp spinning 8500 rpm and a 94 ZR-1. A base c4 is in no way in the same league as a ZR-1. The ZR-1 looks better, sounds better, is wider and way sexier. It also has amazing presence when popping the hood. 300hp is ok if you’re 90 yrs old and drive auto 👍🏼
@SubieandFriends3 жыл бұрын
@@5abivt I never said they were in the same league, but to most people 300hp and over 330lbs of torque is more then enough American V8 muscle to enjoy in the street and with 0-60 in about 5 seconds with the 6 speed manual and really what else can you ask for? Sure you can get a faster car but that won’t make it a nicer car to drive, you can also try to be the fastest but there will always be someone who will be faster then you ….And sure the ZR1 is on a different league but let’s not forget that the zr1 is based on the c4 corvette and except for the upgraded parts that you mentioned the ZR1 is kinda hard to distinguish itself from the regular 92-1996 corvette, in fact that’s the reason why the ZR1 sold in very low numbers in last model years, nobody could justify the $40-$50k difference over the regular LT1 corvette….but believe me when I say that I would kill to have a Zr1!!! But I would have to settle for a regular LT1 C4…..especially with how expensive the used zr1 are….

The only thing that ever bothered me about MotorWeek was the lack of engine sound. Even with the volume turned up, you could barely hear what the car sounded like.

Those times are slow, my 1999 Camaro Z28, automatic, 3.23 geared with the LS1(305 factory hp lol) ran a quicker quarter mile(13.5@105). Granted that was on a well prepped track, but Motorweek always seems to get slow numbers out of their cars, especially manuals. Only mods on my car were a magnaflow muffler and a modded airbox.

Motorweek test drivers are notoriously bad at launching cars, especially manuals. They don't know how to drive for shit. I think to save money and not have to hire real drivers, they just grab some random guy in their offices to test drive their cars. "Hey, we need someone to test drive this new Porsche 911. Is Larry from accounting available? He's on vacation? OK, lets ask Marv the janitor guy to do it.".

Track prep is everything. I did 12.5 in my 6-speed Camaro (8.2 in the 1/8) on a prepped track, and 9.5 in the 1/8 (which is about a low 14-sec 1/4) on an unprepped surface.

It's weird that so called Corvette enthusiasts trash the C4's but in mid 1983, the new C4 was mind boggling. Anywhere you saw one, they drew crowds so the owners were forced life up the clamshell hood and do a tour of the (expensive to manufacture) forged suspension and Bilstein shocks, show off the amazing f-14 tomcat inspired interior with the digital gauges. Nothing like it was ever seen at that time. Imagine the cost today to cast and machine a TPI intake or using forged aluminum in all of the suspension bits? No gimmick clean and sleek design by Jerry Palmer with the body wrapping over and under the frame to get the car as low to the road as possible. Wheelbase is a tidy 96" , a sports car sweet spot. The Delco-Bose radio was actually designed and engineered by Bose engineers who integrated their real Bose technology into the car actually using the original Bose 901 speakers with amps at each corner. Not some badge job we see today on an otherwise factory radio unit. 100 percent Undefeated in SCAA showroom stock for over 3 years. The base L-98 delivered right now power, amplified low end torque due to the long runner TPI setup that made quick work of short course tracks heralding the dawn of a new performance era we enjoy to this day. And all of this came well before the otherwise awesome ZR-1 hit the scene. So thank the C4, it inspired a new generation of Corvette owners, it was a no holds barred design showed GM (and the rest of the world) that there s still a market for a US made sports car with a V8 engine as god intended. Much respect to the C4. 👌
