Hats off to Mr. X. His honesty in his appraisal of the 1995 Nebraska Cornhuskers is refreshing. There have been great teams throughout collegiate football history. This Husker team is on a different trophy shelf. Remarkably, this team returned only 8 starters from the team that blew away the Hurricanes in the Orange Bowl. The fourteen new starters galvanized quickly and joined a returning core group of stars. The end result is the deepest team college football has ever known. Probably the most remarkable stat I've ever seen regarding a college team is the rushing statistics of this juggernaut. Nebraska outrushed its opponents on average by 400 yards to 67 in each contest. A 6-1 disparity! Even the Alabama juggernaut of today couldn't cram the ball down an opponents throat like this one. Or the 2002 Miami team that is most often compared to them. Why? The depth of this team has never been equaled. At a minimum three deep at every position. This played out in the Fiesta Bowl in the decimation of the Gators. Entire units through the third team played in this game. And played like they were the starting unit! No team ever had such a luxury of depth. Or used it more brilliantly. Name any team you want. This Cornhusker team would have plowed through them all.

My father was raised in Decatur, NE. About 100 miles north of Lincoln. After his 2nd tour of duty was completed at Hunter Arny Air base. He never left coastal SC and GA He also, never quit being a representative of Husker Nation. As for myself, I absolutely love my Georgia bulldogs. Which is where he and I would butt heads. In the mid to late 90's, Nebraska was a beast. No tricks, no gimmicks and no nonsense. They'd simply line up in Power I, Wing T or Option. Put a tight end on the strong side. Indicating to everyone in the stadium. "Hey... Where running the ball, and where going this way. Try to stop it if you can". Then commence to ram that ball down your throat, and wear your defense out. Play after play, until your cheerleaders and water boy would be getting fitted for pads due to attrition. Georgia would usually have a noon kick-off during those years, and since Nebraska usually played in the Midwest. Their game would usually start around 3pm. My old man wouldn't say a word. He'd just come in the living room. Grab the remote and turn off my game, right in the middle of the 3rd quarter. Look me dead in the face as I argued in protest. "Son, when Georgia is ranked higher than Nebraska. We will watch Georgia play. Until that day comes. You need to watch a real team play and take notes. This is how you play hard nose football". I'm honestly glad he is not here to see what has happened to his "Big Red"... He'd be distraught and probably drive there and kick the AD's A$$... Hopefully they'll get the ball and get back to the dominant program they once were.

they can't recruit anymore, they were so dominant before because most of the in state high schools ran the Nebraska offense so they had a good pipeline for offensive linemen. Combine that with being able to recruit stud athletes from all over the country, and you get an elite program. They went away from the Osborne system and it trickled down into their program. They need to get a legit coach who can bring a good offensive system for them.

'01 Miami's starters were loaded with NFL style talent. '95 Nebraska had an extremely specialized program designed to utterly destroy any college team they played, but was so different in style from the Pros that they didn't get as many players drafted as lesser teams, especially on offense. However, their whole team, including their 3rd and 4th stringers, were so well suited for their unique style that they would beat the living daylights out of any team in the college ranks. If you want to see how a top-end team that, like the 01 Canes, was loaded with NFL talent and ran one of the best Pro-style offenses in college football would do against the '95 Huskers, watch their Fiesta Bowl game against Steve Spurrier's Florida Gators. @DamonNomad822 жыл бұрын
They predicted Nebraska's moves back then as well. They just lacked the personnel to counter them like they could now. They knew what was coming but were powerless to stop it. Nebraska pioneered the whole "strength and conditioning" aspect of college football, and had a big edge in terms of raw physical power, as well as a crazy deep bench that let them keep going after opponents wore out their starters. The three things that killed Nebraska's previously unstoppable ground game on offense and their terrifyingly powerful and aggressive defense were 1: Changes in the university's athletic department and the hiring of new coaches who favored a more "pro-style" offense, 2: Other teams' Strength and Conditioning programs caught up to Nebraska's in quality and ultimately surpassed it, and 3: the NCAA changed the rules regarding walk-on players, which had been the reason for the Cornhuskers' insane depth, so they lost that advantage as well.

Good catch. I knew FSU and Nebraska were extremely close in winning %. I thought Nebraska was slightly higher but I was wrong. Those 2 were on a different level in the 90's. Other teams were up and down but those 2 were remarkably consistent.

@@thechristopherfaurisshow yet teams copy each other and teams wanted the Nebraska defense, speed and attack. College football is a copy cat. Nebraska learned from the losses to Miami and Florida State, the offense wasn’t the problem, it was defense. One they made the change, they were dominant. Look at the teams these days, Alabama, Clemson why they are consistently in the title hunt, their defense.

@@charleslowe2095 only because Nebraska is the only school not to fire 1 but 2 coaches after a 9 win season. But look at what Nebraska did from losing to Miami in the 80’s. They learned and changed their style of recruiting, and style on defense. Once they did that, they were a great team.
