I've got a newer version of these. It's an 01. Finding parts for it has been a pain, and VW hates it's previous cars. The top is also a pain to replace. My car came with the auto top feature, but it stopped working when I saved it from the junkyard. The 2.0l is slow, but gets amazing gas mileage. I use it as a leasure car, even though I seem to be working on it more than I drive it.

Parts? Seems fairly easy. They share with Jetta and Golf. My top is like new, still. Its garaged. 2000 model. 22 yr old cars often need some work. I find it worth it for the summers.

The cabrio had a taller 5th gear than the golf / jetta. I bet that contributed to the good fuel economy, and somewhat slow quarter mile.

I had a 97 Cabrio, same color as the one in this video. It was a fun little car when the weather was good, but reliability was very bad. First the A/C broke, then the clutch, then the electrical system. I put way too much money into this car, and finally got rid of it after 10 years of ownership. I may have fond memories of it in the summertime, but it rather soured me on VW.

I had the mk. 1 in the 90s, it was super slow but so tossable just like a GTI. The second gen here somehow managed to be even slower and it was a turnoff when I test drove one. The leather is nice but the rad 90s "neon worm" fabric is the way to go!

I’ve driven both, test drove several Cabriolets and a few Cabrios 3 summers ago. I was Sold on the MK3. Love them both, but theMK3 felt more solid and some features (power trunk, power locks, alarm, air bags) are too nice to be with out.

When we first got married my wife wanted a Cabrio, we bought a 1999 model. Absolutely, hands down without question and no close second place the worst new car I have ever owned. Constant electrical problems which the dealer never could seem to fix. VW corporate had a very " blame the customer" attitude. At the same time my brother had the first generation Audi TT which also had multiple unfixable electrical problems. He actually got rid of his Audi and replaced it with a PT cruiser which was vastly more reliable (if significantly less fun). Either one of us ever have, nor ever will consider another Volkswagen product.

With the two valve per cylinder this engine is not sophisticated for mid-90s basically it's Lada and it's not fast at all even the regular GTI

Besides luxurly level manufacturers out of Germany (like the big three, Merc, Bmw and Audi), I did not find anything Germany built comparable to their Japanese variants up until to late 90'-mid 00's. So this VW of it's time, for me, was no comparison to what was coming out of Japan at the time, both design and engineering wise.

Well, it depends entirely on the model and brand, the Golf with the 1.9 TDI engines is one of the most dependable of all time, easily reaching 800.000 kilometres with proper care. Many japanese cars from this era were rusting like crazy back then. With that said, there were of course also bad cars, like the Opel Kadett, seemingly rusting from the get go.

@@djkenny1202 My comment wasn't on limiting things to whether a vehicle had 4 seats or not, rather the general design and engineering of cars in the aforementioned period from Japan were much better compared to what was coming from Germany. If you need to HAVE 4 seats you'll be stuck with this picnic basket from Germany, unfortunatelly. Better than catching the public bus I guess. lol

How? They blew too much wind on people. These are much less windy. These feel much better built. The added safety is nice. Handy features like power locks and power trunk. More space inside. Better engine. Just a more livable car to use regularly. I srsly considered a Cabriolet, and after seeing several, realized the Cabrio was the better purchase.
