Sold my triple black cabriolet to a girl in upstate NY a few years ago…. She brought her grandfather with her to trailer it home. She knew so much about them and said they had a number of VW’s in the family.

I owned a 1988 VW Cabriolet (red with white top and interior) brand new when I lived in SoCal. I was a skinny 26 year old blonde in a red convertible - I got a LOT of attention. That car was so much fun to drive! I loved it! ❤

I absolutely love those basic old cars! as you've mentioned, there are so few things that can go wrong.

One of the reasons I think these are so popular, they're good first project cars for a lot of people who want to be able to work on their cars themselves.

I looked 2 years ago.. they were not worth considering for work needed. Then, decided to check out later Cabrio models. Sold! Found a 2000, garaged, maintenance all up yo date, top is perfect, new timing belt.. just AC compressor dead. Feels more solid and easier to live with daily. Little things; like power door locks, power trunk, safety from more rigid chassis and air bags. Love all the VW Verts.

Glad to hear it worked out for you! The 2000-eras seem pretty nice too, I don't see too many of them on the road either. Enjoy it!

Referring to your comment about the stiffer ride, it's due to the cabriolets coming with the same suspension as the GTI.

You're spot on about rust. If there's rust on the car body then very likely there's more serious rust underneath.

It's a good rule of thumb for most classic cars too.

I had a 1990 Miata and prefer my 1980 Cabrio. Much roomier and much easier to get into and out of. I'd like to see the host of this video squeeze into a Miata, Unpossible. It can be an all in one car where you can actually do some decent hauling and fit 4 people. Although the shifting is not crisp at all compared to a Miata. Booo. Not as much power either but moves along nicely anyway. Cabrio's were made in Germany where they used better materials for the interior than the coupes and sedans built in the USA. .

1:13 it's pretty much the norm with Volkswagen and this type of car. For example, while they released the MK4 Golf hatchback and wagon in 1997/1998, they kept the old MK3 cabriolet and just changed the front end to resemble the rest of the MK4 lineup. The only noticeable change in the interior was the steering wheel.
@PRNTestDrive2 жыл бұрын
I think Mercedes-Benz and BMW has done this also, but usually just for a couple years at most, not an entire generation. It was really interesting to learn about this, I didn't know much about the Cabrio before but I feel much better equipped now.

I bought new a 1990 white on white on white wheels (and I am a guy) lol. It was "the look" in the late 80/s and early 90/s lots of cars were doing the all white but the Cabriolet unknown to me was considered a "girly" car but I did not know the difference. I loved it. Mine at that year I think was the first with power windows and an air bag. I did not really even want the power windows but what bothered me most was it lost the vent windows they became permanent, you could not open them. However I did have A/C and I am a Houstonian and it is HOT AND HUMID. So, even tho we rode around all summer with the top down we had the air blasting too as foolish as it may sound. We really did not care we were young, fit , shirts off, playing tennis. A rain storm would come out of nowhere and we would run to the car to put the MANUAL top up. LOL good times. Drove it all over TEXAS to all the main cities for Tennis Tournaments. Then took my little brother to California, San Diego/LA Disneyland on Spring Break. A time when you could take that drive, was straight down interstate 10 until just into Cali, take Interstate 8 and straight to San DIego a 24 hour drive. Never had one single water leak, the car was ONE of the more quiiet cars I ever owned even owning more prmium cars since. Fun time, great car, did not keep it too long, maybe nearly 2 years and moved on to other things. It was a memorable time and a memorable car in my life, one of the most exciting buys out of all the cars I have owned.

Hi all, I have an 86 Cabriolet 3-speed auto wolfsburg that recently started dying on me and I'm turning to good old KZbin community to see if you have any idea of what the issue could be. The car died a number of more times after driving in neighborhoods for about an hour. After some time driving, the car begins to give a low oil pressure on the gauge and it would experience lowest pressure when the car was driving too slow or idle, and this would be at the same times that the car would die, without any shakes or jerks. The oil levels are good and clean. And there doesn’t seem to be an electrical or fuel problem based off of how easy the car starts back up again. When I accelerate the oil shows good amount of pressure but there are times when the pressure bounces from low to high and prevents the car from giving full acceleration before giving a jerk of power. I luckily was able to park the car at a jiffy lube after a few sudden engine stops where a worker there had suggested a possible issue with the oils pressure pump (either it broke or something in it needs fixing), which seems to make sense when I think about it more, but I don’t have the best knowledge about this to be sure. Anyone have this same issue before and what was your culprits?

I'm 6 foot and much bigger, so you should be fine, although you may need to drive it exclusively as a convertible. I'd imagine even if I were of average weight I'd still be sticking out of the roof.

About half the ones I see for sale here are automatic, and many of the manuals around were converted from autos.
@Zhagg1 Жыл бұрын
@PRN_TestDrive I'm surprised. The auto cost a decent premium to get back then, and everyone knew how to drive manual. Even trying to find auto transmissions is difficult, which should be easy if everyone's converting auto to manual. I would presume, at least. Great vid!
